Can You Hear Me, Satan City? |
Power Level: 10,325 Word Count: 606
“Satan City, huh? It’s been a while,” the Saiyaness said as she walked through the streets of the bustling metropolis. Inside, she felt a little nervous. This was the first time she had returned to the Earth’s most expansive capitol since the wake of the Saiyan Solar Empire’s invasion – not too much had changed. Though the aesthetic damage had been repaired, there were likely still many a mind that had been wounded by that fateful fight of the Earth’s continued survival against the myriad of intergalactic threats that roamed the stars. But she was not here to apologise for the hows and the whys of her racial relations, or at least not in a direct way. No, Endivia was here for a different reason.
This might not be ‘orthodox’, but it can’t hurt to try, can it…? Despite the progress she had made – both physically and mentally – since her long departure from the mighty town, the musical madam still felt somewhat distanced from what she once was. Through the aid of an unlikely ally, an acquaintance of Namekian origin by the name of Namorel, she had managed to rekindle a passionate flame from dying embers. But even so, she still felt as if the remaining hurdles had been replaced with various hazards of much greater calibre. Now was not the time to back down, however. Her Saiyajin pride, even if twisted, still carried her on.
At the street corner she paused, casting her dark eyes about to familiarise herself with the city’s layout. Judging by the prominent spire of the skyscraper opposing, she was not too far from the entrance to the city’s park – a famed expanse of emerald amidst the jungle of concrete, glass and steel. That was her destination, for it was a common point of thoroughfare for those of pedestrian mobility, and thus a perfect place from which to emanate her own design. Her eyes settled upon an advertising board affixed to one of the nearest towers; a display depicting some sort of theatrical production from the South Capitol scheduled to perform in Satan sometime in the upcoming week. The handsome façade of some thespian adorned the neon-lined billboard.
“Soon, that’ll be my face up there again,” she whispered: “Now I’m more than just a guitarist!” I hope those kids did what I asked right… Normally the laid back and casual kind of woman, ‘Chicory’ had pushed herself to a whole new level in preparation for what she hoped to be her return to stardom. Unfortunately, being practically broke and still somewhat shunned by the upper ranks of businessmen and women for being one of the ‘evil’ Saiyans meant that she had had to make some rather unusual adjustments. One such budget cut came in the form of recruiting a bunch of rambunctious, hormone-fuelled teenagers to do what they were apparently doing best: Graffiti.
Her request was simple enough – an arrangement of ‘artistic’ works scattered about the city near the park to promote her up and coming performance and point the public in the right direction at the right time. At exactly half-past noon, the dark-haired demoiselle intended to rock the world of an ideally substantial audience with her new and improved flavour. Fifteen minutes remained until that deadline, and the enigmatic entertainer was making her way to her designated stage on time and without delay. Indeed, up ahead were the gates to the park; just one of many entrances to the area in which her music would be played and her voice heard like never before. There would be no charge to attend – payment would manifest in the form of recognition alone…
Chicory returns to Satan City, ready to rock your socks off!

Jormungandr wandered into the park, curious. She had been rather intrigued by the graffiti - some of which had been.... not safe for work, to say the least - and had decided to see what this performance was like. She looked around to see where the performer might make her appearance.
She shrugged, seeing several possible spots but none that stood out much, and started for looking for somewhere to wait. She grinned, seeing a tall hill from which she could see all the places she had singled out as possible stages. she sat down on the grass, humming softly. She had never been to a concert, and was actually rather excited.

The time was now! Though her perceived audience was not exactly as gargantuan as her previous concerts, there were still a good number of people, and Endivia was sure that more would flock like sheep when the echoes of her activities spread. Nervous was she, despite having lived through this many a time before. Her head thundered like a bass drum within her chest, filling her blood with a rush of adrenaline. Anticipation was a wonderful drug, even if it did not always feel like it. The ultimate question still pestered her, no matter how deep into the recesses of her conscience she delved.
What do I play first…? A selection of songs having been practiced and crafted to suit the needs of the many and the few alike, preparation was all well and good. The issue lay in which anthem would be sung first – she knew she needed to appeal to the wider audience at first, and then narrow it down so that she could garner as much attention as possible. Even as her dark eyes assessed the various people milling and chatting amongst themselves, the Saiyaness’ mind bounced back and forth between songs like a faulty jukebox.
I guess I’ll start with something impactful; maybe energetic and uplifting, but emotionally meaningful… Humans, Zoanthropes, and a few more unusual races had congregated within the general vicinity of Satan City’s central park. The ornate fountain spat skyward streams of crystalline water that sparkled brightly in the rays of the golden sun above, creating their own little light show as droplets gathered into twisting cascades. It was a perfect landmark around which to perform, but first she needed to announce her presence to the world again. Dressed in her usual attire – purple shrug, black tank top and white bottoms – the musician drew her most prized possession from her back.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” she announced, strumming the steel strings of Tohnari to create a smooth quiver of sound; “And those who identify otherwise! Thanks for coming! Now, let’s get down to it. Are you ready to rock!? ‘Cause I’ve got some new material lined up for all you folks!”
“My name’s Chicory,” the dark-haired demoiselle continued: “Yes, I’m a Saiyajin. But above all else, I’m a musician!” C’mon Tohnari – let’s not let our audience down! Her speech short, the attentions of the people now upon her, she could feel the malice and fear in the eyes of almost each and every one of them. Honesty was the best policy, and while she could well have hidden her alien identity, deciding not to was something she considered as a bold step towards reclaiming stardom. The people needed to know what they were dealing with, and she would have rather not allowed the media to spin-doctor every little detail. Right now, her taupe tail was on full display, but it felt relieving to unfurl it as such. Without further ado, she let loose. No more running, no more holding back, and definitely no more hiding for fear of being cast out again. Her fingers struck her guitar, and soon she felt the lyrics pouring from her lips…
Full credit goes to the original artist of the song, the great and mighty Nano!

[PL: 3,200]
Levlidian descended, that accursed curiosity of his luring him as though a mouse might be drawn to cheese as he arrives within the city. It had been a while since he'd approached this setting and his torn Gi betrayed more to the public about his lifestyle than he cared to admit. Built like a mountain, taught and well honed he'd land upon the green of the grass with his arms folded and dark hair wavering in the cool breeze. Is this what Earthlings called 'music'? Did she just call herself a Saiyan? How utterly baffling and what on Earth was that item she held on to?
The songs were not poorly played, however, it was not to the taste of the dark haired warrior, a scowl turned into a grimace and yet his will to know reprimanded the desire to leave. It was oddly entrancing, considering he'd with held himself from dozens of fights simply to learn, this was an entirely new experience. The need to get closer was swelling in him and now he noticed several souls were watching the tattered creature approach.
Snorting, the short but stocky beast strode and averted his eyes from the onlookers, barging his way in and noting how uncomfortably close they all stood. Figures of all ages and races, Levlidians temper sparked and he began to rise again into the air, hovering, he'd scout the area before locating a bench near by to which he'd perch. Folks jeered and called out vile names as he relocated but a smug grin simply appeared as his bravado enticed him to indulge in the hate. Landing as he intended, watching the woman with folded arms he'd furrow his brow and balance upon the back end of the bench not minding the souls that sat upon it.
"Hey pal! we were here first," cried one of the Teenagers who received a vicious glare from the Saiyan; "Talk to me like that again and I'll use my foot to turn you into the worlds fisrt boot activated puppet," he growled. It took little more than that, the group stood and manoeuvred away from the sudden intensity the young Saiyan evoked on a moments notice, slowly, he turned his attention back to the stage and listened.

Can You Hear Me, Satan City?
Jormungandr stopped humming as the show began. this.... this was amazing! She unconsciously nodded her head to the beat, her eyes closed, just enjoying the performance. After a minute, she opened her eyes again and glanced around, seeing many people who were doing exactly what she had just stopped doing. She also noticed a saiyan floating through the air, scanning the ground. She pursed her lips. He was fairly strong.... about as strong as her, in fact. ".....perhaps I should go say hello" she mused, then stood up and slipped through the crowd towards him as he descended. So far, Capper was the only friend she had, and she had been wondering if maybe she should get more friends. Perhaps this saiyan would be the second friend she made on this planet? She shrugged - she wouldn't really mind if that didn't happen. She was just fine as it was.

A concert. How long had it been since Hinawa had attended one? Way too long, that much was for sure. She didn't know too much about the person who would be playing today - really, she had only noticed this gathering by chance and had slipped inside in her animal form the moment she realized it was a concert. Shapeshifting was always a useful skill to have. The golden-yellow small animal deftly moved between the legs of the crowd, before turning back into the teenage girl once she had a decent vantage spot to actually see the stage - and then, the music began - music made by a SAIYAN, no less! The grimace Hinawa had gotten the moment she heard that almost instantly disappeared when she heard the guitar skills of this woman.
With a blissful smile, the young fox-girl started bobbing her head to the beat, the white bow on her head moving in rhythm with it. Closing her eyes slightly, Hinawa felt the emotion behind ever syllable and riff fill her mind - absentmindedly, her hands lazily followed the movements as if she were playing the song as well. Ah... How long had it been since Hinawa had last held a guitar in her hands? Way too long - that was also for sure. Maybe one day, SHE could be standing on that stage, captivating people with her voice. For now, she simply enjoyed the music, giving whoever was talking nearby some dirty looks without even really checking as to who that was nearby talking about spots and someone shoving his way through or something to that effect - she really had no time for people ruining music.
"Stop yelling or I'll shut you all up." growling that in their direction in a hushed tone to not overshadow the music, she had no idea that the cause of the commotion was actually someone she already knew.

Not allowing her wrists to falter as she played, Endivia’s gaze seemed to shift in and out of focus. There was a certain beauty in music that – no matter how often she strummed – she could not help but fall prey to. Whether it was the electricity of quivering strings, the howls and whistles of wind, or the thunder of percussion, music itself did something that was inexplicable. But the best part of it all? Well, it was that music transcended spatial limitations. It did not matter where in the cosmos you travelled, music was always a possibility; whether it came about from nature, or through the hands of sapient races, it was always there.
Looks like I’ve drawn in quite a crowd… Dark eyes shifting back into reality, the songful siren saw the effects of her energies upon the audience at large. A select few individuals had decided to move on, but many had stayed. Their eyes were either fixed upon her, looking to each other as they exchanged quiet words, or otherwise closed as they let the rhythm flow through them. Humans, Zoanthropes, and even a few of those magical pink blobs known as ‘Majin’ all seemed to revel in the wonderment of just a single song. Of course, not everybody had the same taste in music – she knew this more than well enough.
One such individual stood out amongst the crowd, however. Well, that was mainly because he was one of a very short few to actually be airborne during her performance. Most, if not all of those present who were capable of Ki-powered flight had opted into joining their fellow spectators upon the park benches, pathing and grasses. This one seemed to be doing the same, but by this point ‘Chicory’ had already painted an identity upon him.
I hope he doesn’t plan on ruining my show, the Saiyaness thought, subjecting herself to some irrational anger. Fortunately, her self-control had been heavily reinforced, the melody in control of her hands and predestination holding the reins of her lips. Still, the subject of her uncertainty was none other than a fellow Vegetan. A man of a roughly below average height for their kind, dressed in some sort of Gi, generally looked the ‘rough and tumble’ type – a warrior. The scar upon his face was a clean crescent cutting across his eye, indicating that he was no stranger to a vicious brawl, and the gruff look upon his visage did not seem at all swayed by the energy and emotion that poured from the entertainer.
She quelled Tohnari.
“Thanks for sticking with me through this one, people!” she announced, letting the guitar’s resonance fade and taking the brief opportunity to retune the chords. Meanwhile, not wanting to let the energy fade completely, but still giving time for it to subside just enough for a change of pace, she spoke again: “But I know that genre’s not everyone’s flavour. Shall we switch it up? How about something with a bit more power… I’m sure this’ll hit home.”
The fellow Saiyan’s presence had unwittingly tipped the needle of this record in a new direction. Carefully, she allowed her own life’s essence to pass through her guitar’s strings again, this time unlocking a whole different array of pitches and cries which would soon become apparent. Thus, she began the second song, ready to use her own Ki as a miniature light show…

What was this, the concerts main attraction had fixed her eyes on Levlidian if but for a moment and a cruel grin emerged about his lips to paint his visage a darker shade of intimidating. A long with her shift in tune, the beast found his head bobbing with the riffs and his foot tapping upon the back of the bench he rested upon.
Was this a unique form of challenge? Probably not but it was clear that he shared the same heritage with this one. Switching his gaze, Hinawa's familiar energy came to the young Saiyans attention as did this new energy. Two Ki users had joined him here and there was an excited burst of ki about him distorting the scene behind him as though a fire burned where he stood.
Did he just hear her? Hm, odd, it was so very loud the young Saiyan could barely hear anything but the music. Each gawk he received was ignored, his antics were common place to Levlidian.
Watching the crowd and the magic of music, be coulsn't physically ifentify either soul in the crowd and frowned. These weaklings were oscurring Levlidians sight, pitiful.
"Hinawa!" He roaŕed suďdenly to rhe crowd. He then glanced for the musicaĺly inclined Saiyan on stage flashing a playful wink of recogniton, confirming that he had spied her switch and approved.

Jormungandr emerged from the crowd as the second song began. The serpent was somewhat confused by the drastic shift in style, but still found it enjoyable. As she turned to the saiyan warrior, she heard him bellow a name. perhaps another person I might befriend? she wondered, then shrugged and approached him. "hello..." she said hesitantly, not entirely sure how making friends worked.

That grating, annoying voice that was loud enough to penetrate the air even with the music playing... No doubt about it, Levlidian was here. She still wasn't too sure if he was her favorite or least favorite Saiyan she had ever met, but right now, Hinawa tended towards the latter - she HATED it when she was interrupted while losing herself to music, and while this second song was far from her favorite genre, it was still one she enjoyed regardless. As far as Hinawa was concerned, this Saiyan woman was welcome on Earth and welcome to stay here to keep making more music. With a quiet groan, Hinawa concentrated - and shapeshifted into the form of a fox again, slipping through the crowd to emerge next to her Saiyan acquaintance. The red, intelligent eyes of the animal had some condescension in them towards him - but with rapid speed, the form of the animal changed, grew in size, and fur was replaced with clothing. With her new clothes, Hinawa actually looked relatively pretty now, but her annoyed facial expression didn't help with it.
"Levlidian, you big oaf! Could you be quiet while I'm trying to enjoy some music?!" Hissing at the Saiyan who was still quite a bit taller than him, she sighed slightly - then, another unknown face joined them - and a strange one at that. A snake Zoanthrope, maybe? This person seemed rather shy, to say the least. As a child, Hinawa had been very shy, but nowadays she was one of the ruder humans around. Still, she gave the serpent-like person a nod of recognition.
"Hello there. Don't be intimidated by Levlidian here, he's way more bark than bite." Giving the Saiyan a mean grin and look, she turned her attention back to the stage. "Now, Saiyan, I don't know how this works on your planet, but here, you pay attention to the stage at a concert - so try doing that for now, please? I haven't had a chance to enjoy music in years." Turning her back to both the Saiyan and the serpent woman to keep watching the stage with her blue eyes.

Thematically, Chicory’s choice of melody did well to fit in with the feelings of many a man and woman present. If anything, this makeshift concert was less and less about reinstating her name as one of the world’s top guitarists, and was evolving into an apology of grace and grandeur. Her initial song especially had been sung from the heart – Namorel had certainly made the most unusual of impacts upon her mentality during their brief interactions. The second was quite different, but followed in a roundabout way the intent of her design. ‘Ignite’ summed up a lot of what had happened in Satan City during the Saiyan Solar Empire’s invasion, but this song had been crafted to make a point of standing tall in the fact of undeniable opposition.
But, how was she supposed to follow?
“Hinawa!” shouted a man’s voice, sparking (oddly enough) a flame within the musical madam’s soul. With a rather fierce look in her eye, she cast her gaze to the source of the outburst, only to find that the very Saiyan she had spied just moments before was this time daring to try and shout over her guitar’s voice. Even playing was not about to douse that irritation that was welling up inside of her. Had he cheered her name, she might have taken the outcry as a compliment – a sign of adoration growing within even the most unlikely of individuals. However, that was not the case. Almost drawn out by her inner loathing of interruption, visible sparks of Ki burst from the chords of Tohnari; sparks which followed the energy of the song as they dissipated like the brilliant showers of fireworks.
“Huh? Sounds like we’ve got some rebels in the audience,” Endivia called out in the wake of her second song’s final notes. She did not hesitate to direct her gaze towards the ‘troublemakers’, even if only for a brief instant. A glance such as that would be more than enough to make them realise that they had become an unexpected focus of the fiery femme’s attentions. Certainly, they were an unusual bunch. The Saiyan warrior aside, the presence of a distinctly more serpentine spirit and what appeared to be a Zoanthrope venturing through her ‘angsty teen’ phase were sure signs that the appeal of music spanned far.
“In that case, I’ve got something lined up with a bit more ‘bang’!” She smirked, almost cockily: “This one’s for all those who like to strike out on their own!” The milling of the audience ignored, the taupe-tailed talent made a few more quick adjustments to the tuning of her ebony instrument. As long as she had the attentions of the people, she really did not care as to their identities, save for the select few that thought it a good idea to pipe up unnecessarily. If not for possessing an at least partially pacifistic attitude, Chicory might well have fired off a few warning shots towards her kinfolk. She was not here to cause chaos, but to entertain. Any dissatisfaction and irritability that built up inside her was going to be released through the medium of music.
Her fingers graced the guitar once again, this time sending much deeper and heavier emanations into the atmosphere. Even more detached from the energies of the previous two, this next melody – not to mention the lyrics that would soon accompany it – would at least hint towards the more aggressive side of her nature. In a way, it was to be another indicator of how she was willing to press forth against adversity and rock the world once more…
A fan song by the one and only Miracle of Sound (Gavin Dunne)!

Hinawa's approach had hardly come as a surprise, he eyed her as the woman spoke and shrugged, "How else was I going to get your attention, ask politely?" she seemed dressed differently and rather annoyed, excellent, he thought and outwardly inspected her clothes. "You look different, a new set of garments? They suit you," the compliment was of psychological meaning. Levlidian wondered if there would be a fluster, a shrug, perhaps a slap for being so blunt? people were fascinating to provoke in many ways or perhaps the music was altering his persona slightly. Interesting thought, his brow sinking as the process went on in his head, could music do that?
Levlidian turned his head to the approaching figure, a serpentine figure indeed but he offered a salute of greeting all the same; boasting an equally arrogant smile for Hinawa's words. Keeping his voice lower and to more of a conversational tone, the young Saiyan glanced to the note on rebels from the musician on stage and his grin widened to one like a jesters.
"Far more bite than bark, though I'm here to investigate this 'music'. Thus far I'm enjoying it, what of you new comer?" as the chords drowned his voice in part, the crowd seemed thrown by the switch in tone and Levlidian's boot began to match the quick, successive riffs of the Guitar. apparently his presence was making this all the more enjoyable for him, excellent. The new arrival seemed, odd, in comparison to what the Saiyan had seen before, again, the intrigue rose and his obsidian orbs trailed about their figure as he took in the unique attire and form this woman took.
"This artist has some brilliant tastes," he muttered mostly to himself in the wake of the cheers and cries of the crowd. Heat was another issue he'd observed, pearls developed about the brow of his bastion to which he'd remove with the back of his gloved paw. So many bodies, it was getting almost as warm as when he prepared a Ki ball or his power as a weapon. Still, with the presence of the Zeno' he overly enjoyed irritating and an acquired new, possible sparring partner in the midst of all this hubub; Levlidian could hardly complain despite the desire to cause more havoc to provoke more angry music.
"Though on planet vegeta, the only 'music' I hear is the dull droll of mocking, screaming and the odd gagging. hardly as interesting as this,"

Can You Hear Me, Satan City?
Jormungandr blinked as a fox approached them, then stared dumb-founded as they grew into a person. As the woman spoke, The demoness realized she must be the person the rugged Saiyan had shouted out the name of, then sighed with relief as she called that saiyan Levlidian. She liked knowing the names of her acquaintances, partially because she had several whom she didn't know the names of. "Hello... Hinawa, was it?" She said, noting that the woman was far stronger than her, then suppressed a chuckle as the two talked. She glanced curiously at the musician as the third song started, this one even farther removed from the original style than the second one. The serpent shrugged, enjoying it nonetheless. "I'm finding it very enjoyable" she said in response to Levlidian's inquiry, then nodded her agreement with his statement that the performer had excellent taste. "My name's Jormungandr, by the way" she said, holding out a hand in a direction that could be interpreted as being towards either one of them.

Wait, what - Levlidian, the rough rude Saiyan who was pride incarnate, was actually COMPLIMENTING her looks? Hinawa was a bit baffled at that and couldn't help blushing slightly. At least someone in this world thought the few scars she had didn't ruin her looks, so that was something, at least... but did that person HAVE to be Lev, of all people? She couldn't believe it.
Apparently they had managed to annoy the Saiyan on stage at least slightly, and Hinawa did feel a bit bad about that - though her next song was even better than the two before. Giving the snake-lady that had walked up to them a nod, Hinawa smirked for a moment before shaking her hand, hoping this might piss Levlidian off at least slightly - maybe then he'd stop complimenting her, that was just weird. Though now it was on her to actually accidentally be a bit louder with her voice.
"Wait, WHAT? You don't have music on your planet?!" Staring at Levlidian in bewilderment, she shook her head slightly at this insane revelation. "Well, at least that woman on stage has overcome that terrible fate of your people. No music... crazy." Shaking her head, she really wondered how long it took this Saiyan woman to learn to play this well if her planet didn't have anything like it. Of course, Levlidian could simply be an uncultured brat who wouldn't recognize music if it slapped him in the face, but she doubted that.

The park was alive – a tide of bodies that seemed to have grown immensely over the course of just a few minutes of music. Of course, some who were less socially inclined seemed to have taken their leave, but even Endivia could not help but take note of how some individuals lingered on the outskirts of her audience. Quite simply put, the aesthetic variety of the audience was far more diverse than what she had expected; and their numbers? Well, her odd manifestation of Saiyan pride shelved, it was well above and beyond the anticipation that had welled up inside her prior to the performance. It seemed, regardless of racial discrimination, one small step was in fact a giant leap.
It’s so familiar, she thought: But it’s still so strange… Indeed, the feel of being the centre of attention once more – in a positive way at that – was a welcome burden upon her shoulders. Her prior career shattered by the Solar Empire’s invasion, retracing her steps down the career path of guitarist had seemed an insurmountable challenge. However, Chicory had branched off from what had been done before. Simply by adding lyric to the melodies which Tohnari roared out, she had painted a new façade of entertainment upon herself. The cheers and jeers of the crowd, the heat of their combined energies; it all served as a means of assurance. This was what she had always been meant for!
Once again, her ebony guitar’s strings were silenced. The electricity of the audience too seemed to dwindle in response. Unfortunately, not having a complete stage meant that the dark-haired dame could not see as each and every face. That, she admitted without words, was the deepest regret of this whole idea. Still, the raised stone border of the park’s fountain feature served as just enough of a boost. She wasted no more time, quickly adapting the tension of the chords. It was time for something different; a little less angry, perhaps?
For the fourth and what would be final time, Endivia’s Ki flooded the silvery steel strings of her guitar. The growl of her voice soon to accompany the unusual reverberations, her only hope was that this final song would spark something within the crowd. As a performer passionate about her works, it only made sense that the appeal of music was not about singing, but about how many people would sing along if offered the chance…
Pretty Little Psycho, by Porcelain Black! This is also how I imagine Endivia's voice to sound. Unfortunately, the post turned out shorter than I would have liked, but never mind! She'll be getting more involved next post.
