Thread PL: 325,441Can the dead… sleep, I wonder?Finished with the day’s exciting events, from the chummy pals of Alaistair's to the snarky Xylo that seemed to have almost as much interest in his family as she did – Zerori was ready to at least try and sleep. Maybe her body didn’t need it… but her mind certainly could use it! So here she was, in the forest near where she’d found the delicious fruit, sitting and tucked away into a small patch of briars and bushes that shrouded her on all sides like a small cocoon, leaving only a foot and a half size opening for her to crawl through. She wanted peace, quiet and more than anything a place to just think without the need for anyone to bother her. The thickness of the briar patch, unable to truly cut through her skin as tough as it was, nearly darkened the round home she’d made to nearly pitch black. Perfect for her to try and sleep. Turning around, giving a wide yawn, Zerori shifted herself to lie on her back, placing her arms behind her head as she closed her eyes. Despite not needing sleep, she did feel exhausted surprisingly! Moments passed in near silence, the soft trickle and sway of the blood pond nearby providing some facsimile of white noise to lull her. In her mind, as she faded into slumber, she would revisit various events in her life as her mind deciphered them in it’s own cryptic way. When her mind settled on the man known as Nicolas, her face shifted and gave a soft grunt of discomfort, her brows moving upward in distress. “Mh, N-Nic…” For some reason, he seemed… panicked. Alarmed and just plain terrified. Was it her? Did she do this to him? Head twitching to the side, the vision vanished just as quick as it came and she was left with only numbness before something off started to happened –completely out of her control. Unbeknownst to many, dreams were truly a portal. To where, it was a mystery to many still. For the troubled saiyaness… it would lead to an interesting affair. .. . Feeling cold Zerori jolted awake, blinking rapidly to try and clear her vision. Everything was still dark and she was still on her back in the posture she was in before. However, the first thing she noticed is that she was laying on grass and second… was that she didn’t feel claustrophobic. Sitting up slowly, she took in her surroundings as her vision adjusted to the darkness. Books and papers were strewn about, and furniture pieces of odd shapes were near the walls. As she turned her head, Zerori would jump slightly when a bed seemed to appear in her vision. “W-Where-?” She mumbled, slowly getting to her feet. During her time on Earth, she’d taken residence in various apartments and this was similar. But this was NOT her apartment. And she was certain she was still dead. It didn’t add up. Nicolas Mclendon

A curious thing would happen the more Zerori looked around. Details, that were once fuzzy and indistinct, would slowly be drawn in as if she were standing in the pages of a living sketch book. The more she looked the more an identity would form. There were subtle things like disorganized shelves lined with scattered art supplies or a few books here and there. As well as stands stuffed to the brim with figureines of various costumed characters from various assuredly dorky origins. Taking it all in gave the impression that this place was a sloppy disaster zone. On a second inspection though, one wouldn't help but think that it was certainly a home. She didn't step into a picturesque apartment from a magazine cover she had clearly stepped into something real and thoroughly lived in. However, there were a few things that seemed more than a little off. For starters, the alarm clock on the bedside table flashed with gibberish and strange symbols instead of the digital numbers one would expect. The window also seemed strange and unnatural, there were no distinctive details that could be seen through it leaving it as a blob of indistinct color and light. Any reflective surfaces displayed distorted broken images when looking to see and the room seemed to be filled with a surreal strange light that made everything seem...Light. There was an odd sensation of 'false reality' that filled the air. Was this some new kind of hell? Before any questions could be asked the alarm clocks strange digits would shift to something else and a crystal clear tune would begin to flood the mysterious realm Zerori had found herself in.
A soft gasp would flutter from the once empty bed as a figure fumbled for the clock. A gloved hand batted at the device a few times before giving up entirely. A frustrated groan would fill the room as the figure pulled itself free from the bed.
"Ugh...That damn alarm..." Nicolas' voice called out as the young man revealed himself from his prison of blankets. Oddly enough, it seemed Nicolas was wearing his glasses and had his long brown hair down like he did when the two first met. Yet for some strange reason he was clad in his Captain Nova outfit minus the visor and his long segmented cape. It was as if both of his appearances had somehow melded together to create a new image for the demoness. He sighed, rubbing the hair out of his face before lazily looking aside.
His eyes shot open in alarm as he stumbled out of his bed. "Ack Z-Zerori! Y-You're here! In my room?! Where have you been! I've been waiting for you to come back to earth for ages now!" He called out, his unconscious mind not registering what was really going on.
He was dreaming. For real this time.
Despite that the young man would stand up and take the demoness hands into his own as he looked down to her.
"You jerk...I've been worried sick you know?"

Taking in the details before her, the demoness was at a loss for what was about. Obviously, who ever lived here was quite a messy person. Eyes catching notice of a slew of papers on the table, she’d walk over to observe what was on their surface. With a soft gasp, she was greeted with a jumble of illegible letters, numbers and signs. What happened to this person? What language was this, even? Blinking at the mystery of it, she’d turn back around to look at the rest of the room.
She jumped suddenly as a sound permeated the room and locked eyes on a sudden figure in the bed. How did I invade a home?! Usually, she was aware of doing such things. As a hand came out to turn off the alarm clock (which also made no sense by the symbols), rummaging to turn it off before giving up, the saiyaness would walk around the bed and reach for it. Grasping it tightly, she’d meant to crush it. Like all things in the room, however, logic seemed to evade physics and she could only glare at the invulnerable piece of crap.
The real illogical realization… rose from the bed like a zombie. “N-Nicolas?” She whispered and he seemed to see and acknowledge her at the same time. Staring at him, even sprawled out, she felt like a cold chill ran down her spine. Flashes of memory when he was on Kanassa fused with memories of their memorable date and it left her unable to truly analyze her emotions. At his questions, she grinned at him and opened her mouth… before a dark cloud hung over her and her surprise dispelled away to sorrow.
I can’t believe I almost forgot I was dead.
Staring at him, hands in his own, she could only take in the silence for a moment or two before she looked down and smiled briefly to herself. “Damn, this… wasn’t how I wanted to see you again. And it feels like a dream, too…” She shook her head at whatever confusion she might have incited at her wishful thinking and looked up at him. “It’s been a while, yeah, but I’m,” She cleared her throat from the tightening ball the threatened to silence her, “-You’ll be waiting a while longer, Nic.” She spoke quickly, trying her best to sound firm in her words.
Moving her hands away from him, Zerori looked up in his face just before she formed his own hands into fists and held them. It hurt, telling him something that she herself would never want to hear. And hearing it from her how the hell would he accept it? “I…” She paused, hesitating. In battle, she would be dead now. But this wasn’t a battle – it was a war. Wars took time, lives, money, and even the love and affection from caring people.
In the corresponding events that made a catalyst of distrust between them… She needed to tell the truth.
Closing her eyes briefly, she ducked back into cover. Letting go of his hands, she laughed and reached up to flick his nose with a sad smile, “Dumbass… I’m sorry I’ve made you worry. You shouldn’t have to wait long, yeah?” Her voice was tinged with an uncharacteristic sweetness and it felt wrong. Whatever happened to her ability to lie?

As Zerori battled with her words and her thoughts Nicolas would slip out of the bed, the furniture fading away as if an eraser was taken to it. The more he seemed to focus on her the more the room around them seemed to lose detail and become less distinct. He forced a smile as he was berated and she told him that it'd be a bit longer for them to be reunited. It was then that he took a moment to look around and see his room slowly melting away as if he were living in a surrealist painting of some sort. It didn't take a genius to deduce what was going on after that.
"Well...If that means I have to wait...I might as well make the most of the time we have now..."
It was then that he pulled the girl into his embrace. Despite everything else feeling surreal and indistinct the warmth between them felt real. Even if he was dreaming or living in some fantasy she was real.
They were really together.
"I know you probably hate me... For being there... At Kanassa." He whispered as he held the woman close. The world around them shifted and distorted only to suddenly leave the the two of them on the alien planet. In a heartbeat they were standing in a still frame of their 'battle' but like his room before it wasn't an exact copy. Other than the terror and shock on Nicolas' stupid face and the pain and outrage on Zerori's everyone else was featureless and void of color. "...I hate myself for going there. I really mucked things up trying to make sure no one got hurt..." His voice quivered as the memory played around them as if they were witnessing an imperfect view of their life.
"But...I'm sorry..." His voice quivered lightly as he held her tighter. His eyes burned with tears as he refused to look her in the eye. "I didn't want things to go down the way they did...I didn't want...I didn't want you to go. Let alone stay gone! I wonder every day if I made the right decision... Not just going to Kanassa but being a hero in general. All I do is fuck up and make things worse for other people. I keep convincing myself that I'm doing the right thing but...As selfish as it sounds I want to be happy."
He couldn't contain himself, the words just came like a river as he let his built up thoughts spill out. As much as he liked helping others in the guise of Captain Nova he didn't want to do it if it meant driving Zerori away.

By the Gods, it killed her to lie to him. Days, months and years of training were all she had to cling to at this moment as he brought her into an embrace. Is this all I’m good for…? Zerori thought to herself as she slowly brought her arms up to return the embrace. In the passing a blink, she would look up and see the murky visages of the planet. The planet she’d forsaken for power. The bitter taste of the fruit tingled against her tongue once more she felt the urge to throw up. In taking a breath, Zerori bit her lip while her face was still safe from his eyes. It was only a glimmer but if he saw… if anyone did, it would be hard to explain away the tear. “God, please just shut up,” She whispered, instantly hating her self for how broken her voice sounded. It only took a glance at the expression on her face – from his own memory – to see just how terrified he was and… terrifying she must have seemed. By the gods, have I always been truly so selfish? You are. You always have been, my Daughter… Came the sound of a woman’s voice, familiar to the saiyaness but strange to the heroic Captain. Holding Nicolas tightly, Zerori didn’t hesitate to speak to him. “Don’t be afraid,” She chided gently, swallow her weakness away to keep him strong. “It’s a memory… and I fear my lies have caught up to me.” Dreams have always had a way to show you, to your face, the weaknesses, the mistakes and the truth. And now it seemed that she was doomed to share them with Nicolas. Unable to stop their passing, very brief images would begin to fade in an out of his view. In a picturesque fashion, like a TV screen was produced just for him, he would see the form of a woman dressed in royal saiyan regalia with hair kept cleanly and her arms crossed. The perspective must of a young child, given how tall she was and her frown… was so cold and uncaring. Then, corrupting slowly was that woman’s face turning into something much more demonic, melting away to show the silhouette of a dark figure with shiny ruby eyes… Then, finally, another vision of Planet this time… of a man – oh so familiar to Nicolas that stepped from a broken wall. Bing Gan, ingloriously mechanized as he stared down Zerori. Flashes of color, violent and insensible. Cries of pain and suffering, followed by the maddening laughter of Zerori herself (voice audibly corrupted) before silence and darkness… and then the darkness faded away to reveal the very mechanized man with his arm through her. Unable to see what he saw, Zerori could only hold him close as he shared in her memories as she experienced them before she swallowed and tried to speak. “You’ve never… made a mistake,” She cleared her throat before continuing, the façade of strength her only ballast, “Okay, maybe a few but damn you have bad taste in women.” Pulling him back, it would be revealed that she couldn’t help the tears in the end. Staring at him, her mouth twitch upwards a bit in a smile before she closed her eyes and gradually… slowly… A halo would appear above her head. Nicolas Mclendon

As they pulled away the girl would see all the pain, sorrow, rage, and regret flooding his eyes in the form of tears that were streaming down his face. He could hardly believe what he saw, it was like a demented nightmare or a cruel sick joke. Yet, the pain in his chest was all too real. As much as he wanted to ignore the reality of Zerori being killed by his 'friend' he knew that she had no reason to lie to him, assuming this was all real and they were really talking. He shuddered at that terrible doubt but instead focused on his crying lover, even if she really wasn't there he wasn't going to stand there let her feel so bad. So swallowing his own feelings he'd gently wipe her tears away and gently cup her cheek. "...You weren't a mistake." He simply responded to her self depreciation and comments about his taste in women. "I know it's going to sound crazy and I-I might be crazy for thinking it but when I saw you for the first time fighting Red and his Majin lackey in the North it inspired me to try harder than I had been doing." As he spoke, the image of Bing would melt away as if it were a watercolor being doused. Instead, the two of them would find themselves high in the air, looking down on the skirmish of the north. Nicolas, in his full on Captain Nova gear would swoop through the streets, grabbing people and pulling them to safety as if he were on the cover of some comic. Zerori, meanwhile blazed on in her efforts to repel Komoto. "It inspired me to be strong..." As the figure's locked gazes the one representing Captain Nova would let out a heroic roar and push through the fires and the chaos of a ruined building to save yet another life. As he flew in smoke and ash filled the dream obscuring the two's vision. The smoke would clear, leaving the two in a school covered in a red light. The desperate pounding of little fists on hot metal echoed out as a child's cries filled the hallway. "̡Pl̵ea͡se͏!̶ Do͝n̴'t͠ ͢l̨e͠a͜ve̸ me͏ ̴here! Pl͝e͜a͜se!" The distorted voice begged as the fires outside raged. "...I wasn't always strong...I'm not even strong now." The walls crumbled as Realigner Red suddenly unleashed his steam cleaner attack. His maddening laugh drowned out the child and all other noise in the simulated world. Everything shattered and crumbled around them. The building, the sky, the world, everything. It left only the two of them, holding each other. "But, with you...I feel like I can be. I can't describe why but...You bring out the best in me. So...To see Bing take you away, and to listen to you doubt my decision in how or why I care about you tears me apart more than anything."

Through the haze of her own self-belittlement, Zerori kept her gaze trained away from Nicolas’. Shamed and unable to maintain contact for fear of whatever else might spill from her. It was obvious she had nothing good to give to him, dead and possibly untrustworthy in his eyes…
But he continued to speak. Of memories she held deep within her heart, locked away in equal parts humiliation and pride. It was where she found her first taste of power, quickly followed by a sour defeat in the face of an overwhelming force.
And, belated feelings of regret for the man that she couldn’t save. That stood in her way, as much as tried to ignore the effect he had on her. Oh, how she tried! Even still, choked by her failures, Nicolas regaled his feelings of her when they first met and glancing just behind him as the imagery faded gently from her nightmares… a warm realization filled her chest. Reaching for her breast, she swallowed at the strange sensation. And it wasn’t anger, shame or the familiar lust for battle.
It’s nice, She thought briefly, feeling the warm colors spell out a story.
As the voiced cried out to be saved, Zerori felt her breath come in quick gasps. Ari’s face came to mind and she clenched his shirt tightly in her fists. In a flash, as it crumbled away, she would only gape at the silence and stillness before her gaze lingered down and slowly let her forehead ease against his shoulder. Breathing against him, even in a world with only perceived sensation, she could swear she caught his familiar scent.
“It’s cruel,” She muttered against him, the allusion to how she treated him and how unfair this dream was. “-and I’m sorry,” She whispered, shaking her head against him. “What I want - that is, what you want me to do…” She trailed off, uncertain what she was even trying to say! Clenching her eyes shut, she pulled away and stared up at him with stained cheeks but a fire in her eyes. “I don’t know how I can make you strong again! But, you… what you do to me-!” She pulled away, placing a hand over her chest as if to punctuate the meaning behind her words. “You’ve given me something I’ve never hoped, or even dreamed of deserving, and yet I just keep taking away these things from you.”
Looking away as she thought of every terrible moment she’d been the direct cause of, “Your life, Nicolas! The very meaning of this… this life you had a hero. And now I’m just… just making it worse by taking away your DREAMS!” Barking out the last word, she took another step back and waved her hand wildly in a flourish around them.
Seeming to catch her breath, Zerori stayed silent as she just watched Nicolas and swallowed visibly in front of him. Weakness was to be hated and feared but he… she knew he’d never take advantage of this vulnerability. She shook her head, “Nicolas, why can’t you see that everything that’s happened to me - I deserved?” Her question was so brutally honest, it almost sounded offended.

"We've all made mistakes!" Nicolas exclaimed, only to reach out and take her hand in retaliation as she started blaming herself for all the ills in the world and pulling away from him. "When I said you made me strong that didn't mean that I expected or even wanted you to shoulder the blame for my problems..." His voice softened as the dreamscape darkened. Ripples of color and light pulsed around them and mixed forming new and unusual colors that would fade from memory just as soon as they were seen and appreciated. Despite the mind bending locale, Nicolas kept his gaze on the woman. His forest green hues shone brighter than anything as their connection became physically tangible between them.
"I'm not going to pretend I like or agree with everything you do because I sure as hell can believe that you wouldn't be able to say the same. Take away all the romanticism and the theatrics from what I do and you're left with damaged goods in a mask." He looked down as his costume began to fade away into glittering dust leaving him bare and exposed. "I may be a hero in your and everyone else's mind but I'm not...Not really...So before you think, for one moment that you're stealing some idiot's dreams I want you to know that..." He clenched, grasping her hand tightly as he inhaled softly. "...That: my dreams feel empty without you. You may have taken a few things from me but...I gave you my heart."
As if to visually demonstrate that a golden glow would suddenly emanate from her. A glow that felt as kind and warm as the man before her. "I just hope...With all the craziness that has happened. That you'll still hold unto it and come back." He smiled, a fresh batch of tears forming at the corners of his eyes.
"After all, you're gonna need to give it back you know? I'll be waiting for you to do so, so you can't forget! Okay?"

Looking into his eyes, eyebrows crooked upwards in confusion at his declaration. “M-Mistakes?” She parroted softly, disbelief tinged in her voice. She could feel hand holding her tightly, glancing down at it and back up at him. Colors drained some of her focus from him briefly before she forced her gaze to remain upon his.
The words made her want to feel angry. She SHOULD feel angry – it was default retaliation but he was trying to make her understand. Gasping at his sickening ‘I gave you my heart’ line, she looked away and shook her head, a scoff bubbling into a chuckle. “You… Gods, you damn fool,” Taking a slow step into him, bare arms hesitantly wrapped around his shoulders. That was it, damn him. What could she said to that? What anger she had left within her to direct at him was dissipated now and she… hated it.
But she loved him. This human has actually infected her with his honeyed words and compassion.
Pressing her face into the junction of his heck and shoulder, she murmured low enough the cracks in her throat couldn’t be heard, “You got me, I’ll-” Swallowing, she held him tighter, comforted by the ballast of his broad shoulders. “Y’better wait for me. This ‘heart’ of yours is gonna be here,” Bringing one of her arms from around his shoulder to touch her own chest. She couldn’t face him yet, no – the tears running down her face made her sure she preferred to keep it against his shoulders, drying away in his clothes. “So, don’t… don’t you forget, either. If I – WHEN I come back,” Nodding against him, she continued with a sigh, “I’m gonna need you there. Zucceta, Bing… Etoru. I don’t know what I’m gonna do when I see them again.”
Finally pulling away, she sniffed and brought a hand up to her face to wipe it with her palm, “No pressure,” She croaked, weakly grinning at him while rubbing her eye.
After a passing moment, allowing them to bask in the lasting presence of their dream, a faint crack could be heard around them. Then another, louder and much more pronounced. Stepping away from Nicolas, her hand meaning to hold onto his shoulder tightly just in case, Zerori looked around them with cautious fear. Another rang out, this time appearing to run up a wall to their left from the floor of the world all the way to the perceived ceiling. Her gaze stared at it for a moment before she blurted out the first thing that came to mind, looking back at Nicolas.
“We’re waking up…”

Nicolas smiled, even when the world began to fall apart around them. "It's funny..." He looked to the crumbling horizon, his eyes straining in the pale light that seemed to burst from the cracks. "Whenever I'm with you...Life feels like a dream anyway... A wonderful dream I never want to wake from." He returned his gaze to the girl and smiled, fresh tears welling in his eyes as he took this moment to remember everything about her face as if it was the last time he'd get the chance. At least for now anyway. He forced a chuckle shaking his head to the side, the glittering tear drops being lost to the dreamscape.
"I promise...When we meet again, I'll be there for you. No matter what happens." He sealed his promise by locking his lips with hers in a gentle loving kiss. The taste lingered in his mouth and caused his lips to tingle even as his form started to fade away. In a few heartbeats, the two would wake up in different realities and their lives would move on. So Nicolas did his best to keep the precious moments he had left memorable. He sighed, breaking the kiss as he was finally whisked away. His whisper caught on the wind echoing through her mind as she began waking up.
"I love you...Zerori..."
It was a simple but powerful phrase. One that terrified Nicolas but also made him feel...Complete and right. The words echoing in his own mind would slip into his conscious thoughts as he awoke in his room with a smile on his face.

Oh, how she would miss this. Melting into an embrace she’d never felt so warm within, sharing a kiss that was far too good for her. Like a puzzle falling apart in the hands of a child, cracks splintered and spread leaving the background and various foreground around them to crumble. And still, they embraced and the Saiyan refused to let go, even against the inevitable. And yet, even though she could swear she was still holding his shirt in a vice-like grip, the sensation was fading.
She would lose him again and Zerori’s fingers tried to tighten around his form. Like a chain-reaction, all corporeal form to her senses faded. His back, the scent of his cologne that she can still remember catching that fateful day in that restaurant. Until finally, his lips faded nothing more than tickle and she found herself gasping out a broken sob when she was left alone.
Alone, bitter, and dead. She didn’t dare open her eyes in fear that she’d see nothing and know it had never happened. Another gasp tore through her lungs and her eyes snapped open, back in the dreadful afterlife of Hell and with shamefully tear-stained cheeks.
The only evidence of her experience, believing that it wasn’t just a figment of her imagination, being the whisper of those words she’d always hoped and dreaded to hear. She grasped at her chest but felt no heartbeat. And yet, it was there; her heart. “I…” With a final gasp, Zerori swallowed her fear away to admit it to herself, to him… to the world someday, maybe. “-Love you, too.” The words tasted weird; like honey mixed with blood and she realized a moment later why.
She had no idea… how… when… if… she would ever return to life. But she was going to try, no matter how bitter the taste.
