I'd be objected to that idea because it just promotes more OOC desire to not die leaking into IC motivations. Some people have characters that are reckless, they shouldn't be penalized any more then people who purposefully avoid DE's.

I like the idea of an AL cooldown a lot that scales with the time periods. If you don't feel like putting down the Shoki for a quick escape, you can still escape later for free. That way it works as intended -- a place where your character spends a 'time out' for dying or has to face a work-cost. I have always said that death should have consequences, but perhaps we could change it to offer a cooldown to mitigate the reality of AL being a boring solo-fest grind sometimes.
It could be something like:
1st death wait time: 21 days (3 weeks)
2nd death wait time: 42 days (6 weeks)
3rd death wait time: 63 days (9 weeks)
That way you're gone for a couple of months if you die 3 times and can't pay, but you're not like forever gone if you don't have the will to solo grind.

Alternatively, we could go with Zuni's suggestion, and offer the 1st price for the escape if you haven't died in x amount of days. But that'd be similar to Android's proposed change, and I say we have to take a second look at that proposal if this goes through for fairness to our robits

If we do this then I think we would really need to consider removing the afterlife bonus to pl gains, at least until someone has made it past the timed threshold. If not a lot of people might just pl grind with the bonus while they wait out the timer. While some have a hard time writing solos with large word counts, we have seen many examples of people who can write enormous solos in no time flat- and if they are able to make up for social bonus loss while doing solos things could get out of hand. I feel the need to shoki grind currently slows that potential pl grinding to be within reason.

This conversation has died off so I thought I'd pull out the current proposals as I understand them.
1) The Afterlife remains as it is. If you die three times, better prepare to write yourself a novella.
2) Characters who remain alive for six months drop down one tier in 'death cost'. (My proposal)
3) Characters who stay in the afterlife can either escape at the current costs or wait 3 weeks / 6 weeks / 9 weeks.
Vi-Poi believes that if option 2 is taken, Androids need another look. Otto believes that if option 3 is taken, Afterlife PL gains will need another look. I personally disagree on both those counts but we can argue about that if the options are instituted.

Personally, I don't think that's necessary - the wait times in 3 are very generous anyway, and the idea of my suggestion is to try and get people to stop treating death like a revolving door (so you are encouraged to actually not die for a significant length of time if you keep doing it). Combining both would - in my opinion - rather undermine option 2's purpose and just stack both bonuses.
I also forgot Koramund's option:
4) Reducing the shoki cost to leave the afterlife proportionate to the amount of time you've already been in there.
