The Spinach Wastes… a surprisingly lush and verdant landscape, despite the name. Plenty of wild grasses and flowers carpeted the gently rolling hills. Small trees grew in random spots, usually surrounded by clumps of bushes. All with a picturesque backdrop of mountains in the distance. It was a beautiful land. A fertile land…
Which helped to explain the many pastures and farms that could also be found around the landscape. Some standing alone while surrounded by wild meadows, while others were tight clusters of tilled fields and fenced in paddocks and pastures. There were also plenty of lonely little houses, and big ol’ barns everywhere. All nice and cozy.
This was the scenery that Steel flew over. This was where he pondered settling down for a good, long round of training.
‘Well, lessee…’ He mulled over reasons for picking the Spinach Wastes… ‘It’s got a relatively temperate climate… Near the wild. Not a ton of bystanders ta worry about, but enough people around that I don’t get super lonely. Plus I’m pretty sure ol’ cousin Sahrsoom lives around here… Maybe I could crash at his place. Do some labor, get room and board. Yeah, that’d be nice.’
In the middle of his internal rambling, his shaded eyes happened to catch a most peculiar sight. A barn. Though it wasn’t peculiar to see a barn around these parts. Rather, the barn was peculiar because of the various junk sticking out of it. Random pulleys, support beams, additions…
‘Must be one o’ them fancy “reclaimed houses” er whatever. The ones that are converted structures and whatnot.’
With his interest piqued, he slowed to a complete stop. Then, he floated down to the ground, coming in to a gentle landing only a hundred feet or so from the strange barn. He covered the rest of the distance to the structure via walking. One foot in front of the other, slowly carrying himself across the grass. All the way up to the barn itself, which he circled and marveled at. His shades didn’t show it, but his eyes were sparkling with wonder at all of the strange contraptions and “thingamabobs” popping out of the structure. Along with the way that they fit into the original building’s architecture.
Of course, while he was ogling, he undoubtedly was close enough to set off an alarm or two. Or close enough to at least be visible from a window or opening. And that was well before he got the idea to knock on the door like a normal person, rather than skulk around the property. Which he would move to do after he got his fill of admiring the barn.
