While I really like the concept of automated grading, my concern comes in with how it accounts for quality since that can be a fairly subjective concept. If we are just talking correct use of grammar, spelling, and punctuation that is one thing. However if we are talking something that is well composed compared to a few thousand words jumbled together that is something else. In that vein how would it know the difference between someone writing an in character story and someone posting up an essay about Shakespeare? Not that I am saying anyone would do that but the fact they could is something to consider.
Also, since I noticed this happened recently, would there be a way to confirm the person is an accepted character as opposed to someone who just started posting wothout applying?
While I understand the desire to function in an organized anarchy, and I fully support that, there could be some benefit to having a slightly more structured grading system/grading staff.
As I have mentioned a few times before I was a member of the application staff as well as a grader on a Bleach RP a few years or so ago. The way we did it was to have the heads of each group, for example in the Gotei 13 the captains of each division, grade the writing from people in that division for the week. The graders were also set in a random rotation such that the person that the grader's writing would be graded by someone else. So you might end up with a part of the rotation looking like "13 > V > 6". The person grading the 13th division would also grade the grader of the vizards, who would on turn also grade the grader of the 6th division. This split grading up into managable chunks for people who had been around long enough to be trusted with grading. We had somewhere between six to eight graders each grading around four to ten people weekly depending on activity. In addition the graders were given a 200 point bonus for grading as an incentive, and as well as a penalty to their gains for the week if they failed to grade within the three day grading period without letting someone know ahead of time. Usually the wait time on a grade after the week ended was two days maximum.
In a similar fashion we would have three or four people on application staff, with one head app staff member that gave the final approval. App staff handled the details of making sure applications were up to snuff, made sense, didnt break rules, etc. Once that was handled the head of the app staff would give a final review, usually just a welcome to the rp, or they would point out something the other staff member may have missed. Of course the head also would occasionally pick up apps and go through the whole process themselves as well. Often times the applications would get the initial review within the day of posting and the whole process would take from one to four days depending on how quickly the applicants and staff members replied. During times where there were big expansions in the player base we were able to keep up and when it slowed down it became easy for one or two people to handle it. Again the staff was given an incentive of if I recall 100 points each week that they both wrote and performed their duties. Nothing game breaking but sometimes just that extra push needed to get to the next stage of game play.
Of course I am not saying that this is the best way to do things, everything can be improved on. Im not even necessarily saying it would work here, this rp is set up in a much more rough cut change as we go kinda style. But it is something that could be considered to help ease the burden on current staff without having to make someone a full blown moderator or admin, as well as expedite the process without the possible pitfalls of an automated system.
All that being said I look forward to seeing where this all goes and would be happy to be a test subject for the automated system. Just remember, and explosion in activity and new membership isnt a bad thing if handled well. Its new life and growth. ^_^
