The serene skies reflected upon the amethyst lakes of the beautiful holy planet Kaishin. Vast fields of green grass speckled with deciduous trees and rocky plateaus jutting out of the earth, decorate the landscape. On this serene planet grows large majestic Kaiju trees.
When the magical life-giving fruits of these massive world trees are ripe ad ready they give birth to the inhabitants of the planet, the Shin-jin. These godlike being of goodness spend their long lives absorbed in the academic pursuit of various subjects as they await the passing of a Kai. A Shin-jin is chosen to replace the former Kai as the rest continue their studies. Every so often a great Kaiju tree produces a golden fruit, from which a being with the true potential to bear the title of Supreme Kai is born.
Not all of the Shin-jin born of these fruits are of a kind-hearted nature. Whether for the necessity of balance, or some kind of defect, some fruit give birth to evil beings. These tainted Shin-jin are sent to the farthest reaches of the Universe to populate the dark and corrupt Demon Realm, ruled by the powerful Makaioshin.
12,000 years ago...
A curiously large fruit grew on the greatest Kaiju tree on Kaishin. It's bright golden colour only intensified as it rippened. Many Shin-jin and even some Kai visited the tree to observe this development. Never had there been such a large fruit and it had been many ages since a golden fruit had been produced. There was a belief that this fruit would give birth to the most powerful Kai to grace the plains of Kaishin, however, a few scholars believed that there was something wrong with that fruit and something evil would emerge.
To the surprise of those present upon the opening of the golden fruit, there were two Shin-jin inside. One was a perfect Kai, and the other was a Makaio, a defective demon, tainted with evil. It had sharp claw-like finger and toe nails, canine fangs, pointed ears, long white flowing hair, golden eyes and bronze skin. It was a quick and ferocious demon, scratching several Shin-jin before escaping in the water. The god-like people searched for this aberration for weeks at no avail.
It was unheard of for a demon to exist on the holy plains of Kaishin, but no one had even sensed the little imp's malicious ki. He was considered dead and forgotten as the focus of attention shifted to his counterpart, the young potential successor to the current Supreme Kai. His name was Kujin, and he was raised for thousands of years under the guidance and tutelage of the most educated of Shin-jin.
Kujin was a kind, light-hearted and optimistic individual, always putting others before himself. He was very playful and pleasant to be around, and many people admired him, but given his position, not many people looked at him as an equal, and he lived a lonely life, though surrounded by friendly people.
Kujin's demonic 'brother', called Raijin had in fact survived and remained on the planet, not even realizing there was anything else. Upon his escape he found an underwater entrance to a network of caves leading through the inside of a rocky plateau. With several entrances, the young Makaio made this cave his home for thousands of years. He learned to cloak his presence and ki so as to wander the planet undetected and steal supplies from the Shin-jin. He had to suppress his anger and hatred for those who had rejected and forsaken him.
He spent a great deal of time secretly observing Kujin, his deep seeded jealousy and resentment toward him only grew. Why was his brother, born from the same fruit treated so differently, he would ask himself. He had to accept that there was nothing he could do except survive in hiding. After ten thousand years he had grown quite large and taken on quite a fearsome appearance.
The last time he spied on Kujin he was spotted, and ended up slaughtering four Shin-jin before fleeing from a more powerful opponent. The planet has been on high alert since, and he has spent the last thousand years brooding over his fate in his cave.
Present...
The sky was tinged a reddish purple, the raw lifeless stone terrain was home to the demons and a host of unsavoury residents. The land was speckled with large fortress-like keeps. Some of them were the homes, temples and castles of great demons, and others housed rotten cities, plagued with evil. The Demon Realm was the perfect place for a mage or a witch to take refuge from the opposing forces.
One particularly mysterious and mischievous witch named Yasura had been living in a city in this realm for centuries. She was quite tall, beautiful and young in appearance as far as witches go. She wore a pointed black witches hat and a black dress with matching boots. She was a witch with a very brooding and scheming personality. She could be very pushy, greedy and manipulative.
She often frequented what could only be described a large casino in the underworld where she enjoyed drinking and gambling. One night over a drink she overheard a conversation about an elusive demon who reportedly lives in hiding on planet Kaishin. Suddenly a plan began to unfold in her mind.
Her ancestors had abandoned an underground network of caves thousands of years ago, occupying it when they needed to disappear from the Universe. Since then knowledge of the caves have been passed down the bloodline. Yasura's grandmother taught her how to use magic to teleport there, but she had only been once, when her was being taught. After concentrating for several minutes she disappeared from the Demon Realm.
-----
Dust swept across the floor as the draft of fresh wind in the cave cut through the musky stale air. A breeze was always welcome to Raijin, even if only because of the vaccuum effect of the cave tunnels. Raijin would often stand to face the breeze, letting the wind break gently against his face. But this particular draft was quite strong. Raijin soon stopped enjoying it and took a step back to confirm that there wind was swirling into the middle of the room. Purple smoke suddenly burst out from the center of the cyclone, engulfing the room, accompanied by a bright flash of light. As soon as Raijin's eyes adjusted from the flash he began to see a silhouette in the smoke.
He growled and prepared to attack, thinking that he was discovered by the Shin-jin. But his aggression was quelled when what emerged from the clouds was a being like none he had ever seen. She looked nothing like the residents of this planet. She was about five feet tall with soft skin that looked like caramel, brown eyes and long dark hair under her pointed hat.
Yasura couldn't believe her luck. The first living thing she saw when she materialized on Kaishin was the very monster she was looking for. He was pretty big for these caves; about seven feet tall, with sharp claws on his fingers and toes. He had long white hair that seemed to float in mid-air, bronze coloured skin, and glowing golden eyes. He generally looked very intimidating. But Yasura just put her hand out in a gesture of peace. She didn't want him to run, or fight her for that matter.
"Where did you come from?" Demanded the startled demon.
"My ancestors built this place." Replied the witch. "What are you doing here?"
"I am hiding." Raijin sat down on the floor with his arms around his knees. Clearly he no longer saw the witch as a threat.
Yasura continued to ask Raijin questions, learning about his birth, his "twin" and his escape. He shared with her his resentment for Kujin's good life. He was well taken care of, waited on day and night, trained and educated by the finest instructors. It was exactly the opposite of what Raijin has went through, and he had done nothing wrong.
Yasura showed concern and support, and being the only person who ever actually talked to Raijin in his twelve thousand years of existence, he was pretty quick to accept the kindness. Over the following weeks, Yasura told Raijin about the demon world, earth and of many other planets in the Universe. Raijin lived with Yasura in the cave for months growing close as friends and as a teacher and student.
-----
Raijin had always believed that he was meant to be one with Kujin. Yasura told him that a golden fruit was very rare and it was unheard of that a demon be born from one, let alone a fruit bearing two lives. She told Raijin that Kujin had a pair of potara earrings and if Raijin wore the left one the two would become one forever.
Raijin knew what he had to do and he set off to sneak into Kujin's quarters.
-----
The moons hung low in the purple sky. Vast fields, speckled with trees and small, steep mountains surrounded Kujin's academy and home. Shin-jin guards and scholars populated these grounds. They were on high alert since Raijin's last appearance, even though it was ages ago, the violent outcome created a lasting stir.
The massive Kaiju tree from which the two were born grew right next to Kujin's keep, not far from a large lake. The tree was as thick as a house and very tall. The trunk borrowed it's thick gnarled roots deeply into the earth, between burrowing root were deep gaps, one of which opened into Raijin's caves. His head emerged to inspect the area, taking note of the guards before relaxing with a deep breath, masking his ki. He made a stealthy dash for the side of the fortress, pressing against the wall until he was sure he hadn't been spotted. He followed the outer wall until he was just below the window to Kujin's room. Sneaking in was second nature to Raijin, and he was standing before his target in seconds.
Kujin lay asleep in a large bed surrounded by windows. The large imposing shadow of a demon loomed over the Shin-jin's orange face as he rested, unaware of this mortal threat. Raijin looked upon the young face of the source of his anguish. This life was his. He should be living here, be treated this way and taken care of, not condemned. His heart raced as his gaze caught a glimpse of his solution, dangling on the Shin-jin's ears. All Shin-jin had potara earrings, and they had no effect unless shared with someone else.
"If I take one of his earrings and wear it on the opposite ear as him, we can become one, just as it was in the beginning." Raijin told himself, as he carefully removed the left potara earring. He was convinced that he would return to being a part of this Shin-jin and live in peace in his place, but as he fastened the piece of jewelry to his ear he was rudely awakened from his delusion. An irresistible pull was felt from his chest as Kujin was stirred awake. Without a moment to panic, the two were chest to chest before bursting into a bright light and that engulfed the entire building. Raijin could feel as if his body was being destroyed and reconstituted into something else. All he could do was observe.
He could first feel his control of his body fade away and it grew into something else. His thoughts, emotions, and identity began to change as Kujin's being began to incorporate with his own. It was as if he suddenly remembered an entire lifetime of experiences and hardships. He felt the pressure of his position, the loneliness that came with the distance people took from him on a personal level. He even felt his longing for freedom from the very life that Raijin craved. As these ideals became a part of Raijin, his own delusions about the life he had always wanted were shattered. Kujin felt Raijin's loneliness and rejection and solitude; the true form of the very freedom he had longed for.
As the bright explosion of light dimmed, As did the merging of the two beings. The resulting being took on Kujin's youthful stature with many of Raijin's sharper features. But it was neither. This being was something else. And as the guards rushed in it was clear that the newly formed Raiku was something completely different.
"Who are you?" yelled a guard before another noticed the earrings. "Oh no, look! A demon must have stolen an earring and fused with our future Kai!" He yelled.
The half dozen men charged into the large room from multiple entranced toward Raiku. He could easily see their movement and evaded all of their attacks, knocking each one off balance with his swift movements. He felt a mild desire to kill them as they attacked, but was content simply avoiding them until another three rushed into the room armed with swords. One of them charged quickly, attacking forcefully with a deep conviction in each swing. 'How could they try to kill me, when they're trying to save me?' Raiku thought as he evaded the swings and stabs.
A deep fury suddenly rose from the pit of his stomach as he struck the flat end of the blade, breaking it in half. His hand felt as though it moved on it's own, piercing through his attacker's neck. Before the body hit the floor, he turned to the unarmed assailants, planting his claw like nails into the gut of one of them and breaking another's neck with a chop of his hand, sending the body crashing through the floor. It felt so easy, so natural. The ferocity of the demon, and the refined skills of the Kai in one powerful and quick body was so exhilarating he did not even realize that he was killing people.
Suddenly there was a explosion of purple smoke. The remaining guards jumped back before it cleared only to realize there was nobody there. When they realized the fight was over, the look of terror washed from their faces and they scrambled from the room to spread the news.
----
"We won't be safe here," Yasura told Raiku. He already knew who she was, but she spoke to him like she really knew what kind of person he was. "We need to hide somewhere far away from this planet... Remember when I told you about Earth, Raijin?" Raiku just stood there in a daze, reflecting on what had just happened. His personality was still settling and Kujin's side had never felt killing before, even though it felt natural. In his daze the demon-kai stroked his ear lobe, just then he noticed he wasn't wearing his potara earrings. "Raijin?" Yasura repeated herself.
Raiku snapped out of his daze, forgetting what he was thinking about and looked her in the eyes. "It's Raiku. There is no more Raijin..." he said in a very stoic tone and expression. Yasura rolled her eyes. "Raiku, Got it. You're going to need a name that sounds nothing like that unless you want to get caught... Even where we're going." Raiku just shrugged his shoulders. That's the kind of thing he would figure out when the time came. "Well, let's get out of here. I'm bringing us to Earth." said the witch. Raiku silently agreed and in a puff of thick purple smoke, the two were light years away from the dank underground den.
