*rubs hands together and grins at this thread* Good. Good~
All ideas are welcome and appreciated, even ones that oppose mine. I'm more happy that people are posting in this, it shows that not just myself thought that barriers were sub-par mechanically. My idea was only one method to attempt to boost Barriers, I'm glad to get some others as well.
@misfortune - You misunderstand. A barrier and an attack currently are two different types of techniques. Yes you can shape a barrier whatever shape you want, but you can also do the same with attacks, and frankly a sphere shaped attack around yourself works just fine as a barrier right now but has the added benefit of being able to attack. Im not sure what the rest of your post concerns.
Kizuki - Kizuki, currently an attack would be better than a barrier doing anything you've described thus far. Nothing prevents me from simply creating an attack ball around myself or allies in order to tank incoming attacks for one round, and hell I can even get a counter attack in on the same technique because I can flavor the remaining power of my technique as firing back at anything that hits it.
Vi-Poi - I like that idea, but would instead ask that instead of cutting the bleedthrough in half it increases (possibly doubles) the power of the defense. It would be stronger, but it would also make Piercing variants and the Kienzan much easier to switch to the new system. Piercing variants would treat barriers as normal techniques with no boost, and the Kienzan would cut right through them altogether, thus maintaining their purpose and utility.
Defrosch - Innately sustained barriers would make them much more useful, I could go with this idea to get barriers to be stronger.
Kaula - Currently I don't know anyone who has a Piercing variant, because very few people have a barrier. Making barriers stronger and more useful would naturally increase how many people use them, and thus increase the number of people using the piercing variant to overcome them. Even if a barrier doubles the power compared to an equal ranked technique, Piercing variants would still be useful by cutting that power in half.
I'm liking everything so far, keep it rolling~
