Tanis had traveled through the cosmos to reach this world. Well, that wasn’t really the case. She hadn’t come here for a yearning to connect with her species; she didn’t come here for a yearning to connect with the its cradle. Tanis came here to escape her homeworld, and yet she finds herself in the same wretched biome.
Well, not exactly. Afterall, as Tanis had come to learn: not all deserts are the same. Some deserts’ special language are grand. They tell stories of tumultuous seas of sand, churning over eons. Other deserts are large spires of earth that rise, creating a grandiose dance of mesas that really sends a message.
She had passed through those two ecosystems in the last few days. Everything — from their unforgiving, overbearing life-crushing atmospheres to the unique beauty each of the landscapes spoke of — was a transformative experience. It was a struggle and a delight, every waking, struggling moment of her passage through them. This desert was a different story. This desert lacked the unique, eloquent spacial language that told epic tales. This desert just wasn’t.
It was high noon. The sun beating down directly overhead; tanis had stripped off her coat, and now held it above herself to escape its wrath. Her body was drenched in sweat. Stray strands of hair splattered against her forehead. She made a note to remove her armor as well. There was no way she was going to be attacked here — she could see for miles in each direction, and in each direction there was nothing.
It was almost maddening. Tanis WISHED there were predators; Tanis WISHED there were highwaymen. Anything to break the maddening monotony of sun-bleached cracked ground. She had only the rare breeze that caressed her, ever so lightly wrapping around every soaked curvature of her skin and bringing about temporary relief to the hell she was in. Tanis always took a deep breath when such a king breeze rolled by, truly taking her time to admire it. It was the little things in life…
She would trek for a little longer, until the armor came off. The tossed her coat off to the side as she began the process of unlatching and unzipping the sleeveless body armor. Tanis sighed in relief, as the glistening skin beneath it was exposed. She adjusted her soaked white training bra and hoped another breeze would soon come. She’d grip at the armor’s shoulder and carry it. Her coat was retrieves, held over herself with one arm.
Hours passed of mindless walking. Tanis came to be aware of something; she wasn’t sure how much water she’d have left if her canteen, but she wasn’t sure it’d get through the end of this trip. Her armor, nearing the end of the day, was latched back on. Her coat adorned.
A sigh of annoyance came to escape her lips as Ki began leaking from her body. She’d float at a snail pace, slowly raising herself. “I fucking hate this…” She mumbled, her body already feeling the desperate need for solid ground.
A hot pink, violent aura spiked around her. The woman shot into the sky, soaring up into much-welcome lower temperatures. Once she was high enough she spotted a city in the distance. Good. She wouldn’t have to keep this up for long. She paused, aimed herself at the horizon, and shot forth.
