It was the dead of night and a chill wind blew through the area. The only thing to illuminate the wasteland was the soft, pale glow from the moon and stars that hung overhead. Well, that and the constant bursts of flames coming from the two young women sparring below.
“You need to shape up, Kai! Your form is way off!” the older of the two women barked at the younger one as they stood on opposite ends of their makeshift arena. She was draped in a loose-fitting, faded red kimono; her right arm was completely free of its sleeve, exposing the elaborate dragon tattoo on her shoulder. Her brown hair was tied behind her in a loose braid and she was armed with a staff. “I don’t know what’s got you so distracted, but you better focus on what’s happening here and now.”
“Shut up! The only thing distracting me is your ugly face and incessant babbling over there, An!” the younger of the two snapped back. She had on a fitted black and white top with accents of orange. A pair of red shorts covered her lower half along with a pair of black socks that climbed to her mid-thighs. Her shoes were white with orange accents, matching her top nicely. The younger one’s red hair was tied up in messy pigtails and a pair of gauntlets covered her hands and lower arms.
This little section of wasteland was located several miles to the North of West Capital, and had been the favored training ground of Kaiyo Habane and her older sister, Anzu, for years. They didn’t have to worry about anybody getting hurt or in the way here. There wasn’t much plant life that could catch fire either. It was basically just a lot of dirt and rocks everywhere. While it wasn’t a pretty sight, it meant that they could let loose without causing any real damage to their surroundings.
“Is that so?” Anzu replied nonchalantly with a big smirk. Why did she have to be so annoying? Kaiyo wanted to smack that stupid look right off her face. Actually, that sounded like a great idea! She shot Anzu an annoyed glare right before taking off in a sprint in her direction. Once she got within striking range, both of her fists became completely engulfed in intense flames. However, when she moved her arm to strike Anzu, the elder of the two Habane sisters skillfully sidestepped the blow and delivered a good smack to the back of Kaiyo’s head with her staff.
Kaiyo gritted her teeth as pain gripped her entire head before shooting down her neck. At least Anzu was just using her training staff. There have been several occasions where she brought her glaive into the picture. No matter how pissed Kaiyo got at her sister, she would always admit that Anzu was dangerous with that thing. Oh well, the fiery haired young woman didn’t need a weapon. Her fists were more than enough to do some damage!
Kaiyo spun around and started swinging her continuously burning fists wildly at her sibling. A couple got through Anzu’s defenses, but for the most part she blocked them expertly with the help of her training staff. ”Oh come on, I know you can do better than that,” Anzu taunted the enraged red head, who responded with no more than an irritated grunt. All Kaiyo wanted at the moment was one good hit to knock Anzu on her ass, but she definitely wasn’t going to get it like this.
She clenched her fists tightly and felt the same flames that had engulfed her hands engulf both of her feet this time. Kaiyo jumped up and slammed both feet at once into Anzu’s chest, or she would have if her sister hadn’t once again lifted her staff to block the attack. That was just fine with her. Kaiyo wasn’t planning on doing any damage with that one. Instead, she used her legs to push herself off of the staff and sent herself flying through the air about ten feet back, landing on her feet like a cat.
The younger Habane inhaled sharply before unleashing a cone of fire from her mouth in her sister’s direction. Countless fleks of burning energy speckled the ground as they fell from the cone before immediately fizzling out without any fuel to feed off of. The Fire Breath technique completely covered her field of vision. This had to be the attack that caused some damage. Kaiyo was sure of it.
When the oral stream of flames ended, she drew her hand back and was about to toss a ball of fire at what was surely her sister’s downed form. However, she was shocked to see that Anzu has vanished. “What-“ was all she managed to get out before she felt her legs being swept out from underneath her. Kaiyo hit the ground and saw Anzu now standing over her with the tip of her training staff pressed firmly against the downed sister’s throat. Of course, she still had that stupid grin plastered on her face. Anzu held her weapon there for a few moments just to make it clear that she was the victor, then moved it away just enough to give Kaiyo a swift whack on the side of the head with it.
”Seriously though, Kai, what’s the matter with you? You had no control over your fists, your stance left a lot to be desired, and you even left yourself wide open for your opponent to get behind you. Your technique hasn’t been this sloppy in a long time. You sure you’re okay?” Anzu held the end of her staff out so that Kaiyo could pull herself up, but the younger Habane smacked it away defiantly. She climbed to her feet on her own and quickly dusted herself off. ”Oh yah, I’m great. Just f***ing peachy,” she grumbled.
There had actually been a lot on Kaiyo’s mind lately, but for the most part it was just more of the usual. She had once again futilely made an attempt to hold a job, which she had just been fired from a few days ago. She managed to last a week this time around before being fired. That was the longest she had ever been able to stay at a single job before. It wasn’t her fault that everything was made to be so flammable. All it took was a small handful of incidents where customers or merchandise were randomly and spontaneously lit on fire in her presence to make employers suspicious and give her the boot. Why didn’t she have this damned pyrokinesis under control yet?! How long was she expected to put her life on hold for this?!
”I’m gonna be out for a while. Don’t wait up for me,” Kaiyo snarled at Anzu as she turned her back on her and started walking back to West Capital. However, she didn’t get very far before she heard her sister called back to her. ”You’ve got an hour before I activate the seal. I’ll see you back at the apartment.” With that, she saw a streak of red as Anzu sped past her.
”Augh!” Kaiyo stomped her foot on the rocky ground angrily, leaving a small crater in its wake. If having the environment randomly being lit on fire around her wasn’t bad enough, she had to be constantly reminded that Anzu always had her hand on Kaiyo’s leash with that stupid seal! That wasn’t going to change any time soon with the rate that she was going. There had to be something else out there for her other than being the black sheep of the family or trying to wear a mask that did a crappy job at hiding what she was.
Until she found whatever that was, this was her life.
