Appearance:
The staunch challenger stepped into the ring, long, lean with cheetah-like swiftness and grace.
His nimble legs deftly hopped side to side
floating his sculpted frame around the ring—
Legs built to steady him from crushing hooks
and strong to stand and deliver his own,
Legs built lean to shift weight and sidestep jabs
with the balance and flow of a dancer.
Firm midriff expanding to broad shoulders
that carry the weight of those fabled arms—
arms like vipers that strike without warning
from the concealment of a covered hole
only to retract back just as quickly
leaving their victim searing in deep pain
and puzzled to find the source that caused it.
Fists that will become the songs of muses
who will sing of the champions they felled.
Chiseled jawline, blue eyes, close-cut brown hair,
golden skin. The announcer grabbed the mic,
“Standing in this corner in the blue trunks,
weighing 200 lbs at 6’2,
the challenger from Belle… it’s IRONSIDE!”
History:
Sing to me again, heavenly muses,of the storied night when the Belle Boxer
humbled the Destroyer from Durango,
the first of countless champions he felled,
earning his title and boosting his fame…
Ironside marveled at his opponent
across the ring, celebrated by all—
all but those lamentable souls he crushed
like the brave boxer Fisticuff III
who boasted of his golden belt and fame
only to have both ripped away from him
when he caught a hook from the Destroyer.
Down he went, and a new era was born.
The man from Durango would wear the belt
for the next decade, bringing low great and
weak alike by the power of his paw.
The crowd in Durango cheered their fighter,
"Who is this boy that he should challenge you?
Another overeager fame seeker
come to find only the end of your fist!"
Ironside answered the crowd, "Good people!
You have not heard my name, but why would you?
I come from a family of farmers
fated for a life of debt unless I,
Ironside, can water our barren fields.
You ask who I am so let me tell you.
“Stonewall settled in Belle to farm the land.
He married Platine who bore him three sons,
Oreon, the firstborn, trained to drive mules,
Mineran, the seer who predicts rain,
and Gem, skilled in the art of planting seed.
Mineran married his love, Goldilock,
who bore him two children, son and daughter,
Ironside, the firstborn, standing here now,
and Crystal, headstrong and adventurous.
Stonewall’s land produced food abundantly
and his fields expanded over the earth.
But with all his wealth and prosperity
he still could not control the wind and rains
and great droughts dried his fields and killed his crops.
Prosperity turned to crippling debt.
He sold most of his land just to survive
and strives to work off his debt on the rest.
I was raised in those unforgiving fields
where my back grew hard as iron and my
hands as tough as nails. But a greater life
called me away from those dusty pastures.
“Deciding to put my great strength to use,
I sought out the dark-haired boxing trainer,
Cuko, unmatched in his fighting wisdom,
world renowned in the boxing circles for
his unconventional fighting techniques.
But I contend that he should be praised more
for the endless pit they call his stomach!
How he affords that food I’ll never know!
He saw my potential and took me in.
“After much training, I hope to show you
what fighting skill Cuko unlocked in me.
So today I fight for money to pay
off debts. I fight for Cuko, and for fame!”
The bell sounded and the champion lunged.
In no time he closed the length of the ring
and came to blows with the boxer from Belle.
The two fighters tested each other’s guard,
throwing quick jabs from defensive posture.
But the Belle Boxer launched a jab too far
and lost balance. Seeing the opening,
the champion unleashed a mighty hook.
Aha! A direct hit! No wasted shot!
Only his fist passed right through its target!
The champion looked up to see his foe
had seemingly teleported across
to the opposite corner of the ring.
In fury, the Destroyer fumed and roared,
“What trickery is this? Cowardly boy!
That dark-haired trainer of yours has only
taught you how to tuck tail and run away!
Do you hope to exhaust me? Not likely!
Face me like a man! I have met runners
in the ring before, they couldn’t avoid
my pursuit for long. What help will speed give
when I bury my glove into your skull?!”
Ironside retorted, “Big bravado!
Your haughty taunts have fallen on deaf ears.
My speed— my only advantage is it?
Your prime fighting days have long since passed on
and age has begun to sap your quickness,
but I wager it robbed your strength as well.
The loud bark of an old dog has no bite!”
Taking the bait, the champion charged in.
Ironside laxed his stance with sagged shoulders
to appear less threatening to the eye.
The Destroyer, now overconfident
and enraged, reared back for a knockout blow.
Ironside seized the opportunity
and countered with an abrupt uppercut
to the Destroyer’s newly exposed jaw.
Light’s out! And like a magnificent whale
that surges out of the dark ocean depths,
launching itself high into the clear sky
only to crash back down on its backside—
so went the Destroyer from Durango.
The crowd fell silent but the announcer,
awestruck to witness history firsthand,
belted into the hanging microphone,
“A round one knockout! A round one knockout!
Today we crown a new world champion!
The belt now belongs to the Belle Boxer,
brave Ironside, The Dirge of Durango!”
