Legends have it that long ago when the world was young: demons of all kinds roamed the mortal realm and caused chaos and devastation to the earliest civilizations of the planet Earth. These monstrous demons: as fearsome and mighty as they were, kept most of the planet in submission for no man could challenge their might. That was until: a golden fox with nine flowing tails appeared to defend humanity from the chaotic forces of the demon realm. This mighty being was known to the people of Earth as Inari: the Kitsune of Prosperity. She protected humanity like a beacon of light in the ever present darkness and was celebrated as a true guardian who brought an era of peace to the growing populace.
The governing force of the demon realm: the vile Makaioshin, at first paid no mind to Inari's interferences with their plans to spread darkness and chaos. She was just an outlier and a small annoyance at most. Though, as she began to gain a following and gain more and more power from each victory they decided to do something to stop her. While they could have just easily overpower her with their overwhelming darkness; Inari was a natural born trickster and as such was hard to pin down at any given time. If they were to come at her in force she would just slip away like the wily fox that she was. So they decided to play a little trick of their own to remove her from their hair.
Using some dark magic on themselves to take on the form of a group of soothsayers: the Makai entered the eastern human capitol where the largest shrine of Inari was erected. Once there, they spun a tale of deception and betrayal into the hearts of the men and women of the ancient city. They planted the idea in the minds of the public that Inari, the known trickster, was leading the people not on a path of prosperity and hope but she was leading them to one of despair and ruin.
Outraged and hurt at the apparent deception the humans rallied against the golden fox. They beat her, cursed her, and tore at her golden fur but Inari did not retaliate. Inari tried to explain herself, to fight for the truth with words and reason but the people would not listen. Though she could have overpowered the mortal men she refused to harm a single hair. So the people beat the golden fox down till her body was weak and frail. It was then that, through the aid of some powerful sorcerers, the people sealed her away...Separating her body and spirit the sorcerers trapped the physical form of the kitsune into one of the many towering mountains to the east while they contained her spirit to the demon realm for all of eternity.
The last sign of her existence: the shrines made to honor her were soon destroyed and eventually, as the people evolved and time passed her memory was passed from known history to legend, save for a lone shrine on what was known now as “Mt. Inari.”
The Makai, satisfied with their result, released the first Junsui Aku upon the mortal realm at the dawn of the 'Iron Age' decades later. Without an immortal guardian mankind suffered at the hands of the Pure Evil being for many, many blood soaked years. Eventually though, the demon was slain by an angelic hero from the heavens in a fight that shook the world and soon people began to pledge themselves to the gods that sent the hero or to the hero himself. Inari remained forgotten.
The golden fox faded into obscurity as the population continued to expand and grow. As technology arose cities ended up getting bigger and bigger, and eventually the mortals were forced to cut into nature in order to account for the growth. Trees, grass, rock, and even mountains were destroyed in this mass expansion.
Included in the devastation of nature was Mt. Inari and the forgotten shrine. With it's destruction, the golden fox was ended by the humans she loved so dearly. Her immortal spirit was forever trapped in the demon realm, powerless to help and forever forced to observe the prosperity and calamity of her precious mortals from afar within the chaotic realm...
…
Deep within the demon realm was a secret shrine hidden away from the eyes of most of the demonic denizens that passed by. Unlike most of the realm which was chaotic and wild this shrine was a slice of pure serenity and order. It was a pocket dimension that was created and maintained by the shrine's owner. Within the small construct of a realm: was an eastern styled shrine surrounded by a nearly endless glade of crystal clear water that went on for as far as the eye could see. In the center of the mystic glade was an island with the shrine itself. It was a small cozy little building that had a few rooms separated by sliding paper doors. This building was surrounded by a few abnormally tall Sakura trees that seemed to drop pink petals into the still water far further than it should have been able to reach. The whole pocket realm seemed almost like a painting that was as mystifying as it was beautiful. In fact, the sky itself was legitimately a water coloring of various pastel colors creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere.
“So...My little Maeve has managed to fend off that vicious invader hm? That's my darling little pupil~” A gentle voice happily cooed in the mystic glade. “It seems she's been mastering the power of water as well, It won't be long till she's ready to master the other elements too!” The voice continued in a mix of speculation and praise. “I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised, given her ancestor Maeve is surely just getting started with her leaps and bounds of strength. I can only imagine what she'll be like in a centuries time! If she keeps this up she could easily be running her clan~” The source of the voice, the fox spirit: Akemi, was perched atop one of the many branches of the cherry tree and surrounded by the endless sea of pink flowers. She was a beautiful woman with a stunning figure that was covered by a white and purple kimono. She had a youthful face that was contrasted by a pair of shinning emerald eyes that seemed to be weighted with her age and experience. The kitsune was blessed with lavish golden hair, pointed fox ears and nine of the most comfortably fluffy tails one could ask for.
She sat on her perch with a crystal ball hovering above her palms as she looked curiously at the images presented. Since the girl's banishment, Akemi had been keeping close tabs on her pupil making sure she was safe despite being all the way on Earth. So far she had done the kitsune proud, while there were a few hiccups here and there the young dragoness seemed to be handling herself well, and from the looks of things was even making a few friends! That brought the widest smile of all to the elder demon's face. She happily waggled her nine tails as she anticipated when she'd need her next magic unlocked.
“Hm?” Her ear twitched suddenly as the glass sphere seemed to hum. A rather different set of images seemed to flicker suddenly in her mystical ball. Destruction, death, chaos and fear all followed by the image of a super saiyan laying her challenge upon the world. “So... The super saiyans have returned hm? They're heading for Earth? Tch... I wouldn't be surprised if this was Vukong's handiwork...Why couldn't she just rot in hell? This is a rather cruel trick.” Akemi frowned, her emerald eyes narrowing to an almost feral looking point in her frustration. She pulled a paper fan suddenly from her sleeve and opened it covering all but her eyes suddeny as she scowled darkly.
She sighed, closing the fan and frowning a bit noticeably. “Mmm well, Zuni if this is your handiwork I must applaud you for your foolishness but I've been grooming Maeve to protect Earth or anywhere like this since the day she came to me... “ She said softly, reminiscing of the time she and her pupil had met for a brief moment. “She just needs a little jump-start on her magic is all. It's a little early but I have no choice, if all we have is a weeks time then I must hurry. I need to return to the mortal realm!” She said with a quick nod the fox spirit would step out of her pocket realm and onward to return to the blue planet in which she knew once a long time ago.
“You're asking us what?” A figure in a heavy cloaked hood seethed in disgust. To attain the body she needed in order to return to the mortal realm, Akemi had come to visit the council of Makaioshin that seemed to run the entirety of the demon realm through strength alone. The kitsune kept a fake smile plastered on her face as she stood below the hooded council that loomed over her in a circle. She was waiting patiently as they processed her rather bold request.
“You heard me right, I'm looking to gain passage back to Earth and you all know as well as I do that In order to do that I need a body and you all can fashion me up one good as new! She said in an unusually cheery voice to the dark beings in front of her.
“Why in the realm would we accept such a request?! I'll have you know Inari, when we had you sealed her we fully intended it to be a permanent solution to your meddlesome heroics. Why would we undo that... We rather like having you out of our hair.” Another cloaked figure said with a sneer to the youthful looking woman.
The kitsune gave a soft little smile as she bowed her head. “...I'll give up the bulk of my power, for a suitable body... You may seal it away as you please... Will that be a suitable arrangement?” She said with a cool little smirk knowing that offer was one they wouldn't refuse.
“You're really serious? The Great Kitsune of Prosperity is willing to lock away all her power for a second chance at life? You know upon doing this there's a chance we may just slaughter you with ease?” One asked incredulously at the proposition.
“I'm well aware of the risks involved... Do we have a deal? Or not?” Akemi said opening her paper fan to cover her mouth to hide whatever expression she might have been wearing.
After a brief pause, the gathered Makaioshin would look each other over to see if there were any objections among them. Until finally, one of them grinning beneath his cloak would speak. “...Fine then Akemi Inari... You've got yourself a deal...”
They were coming...
The draconic demoness Maeve Rakshasa stood in the heart of the: Fortune Teller's desert with her eyes closed and her arms crossed. The way she stood tall and firm, undeterred by the harsh sandy winds that caused her spiky, ruby bangs and her regal cape to billow and dance in the wind; Gave off the impression that she was in complete control and remained completely composed. Though, it couldn't be farther from the truth. In reality, she was questioning herself and doubting herself. After coming across all the powerful heroes that were gathered at 'The Timeless Lookout' She couldn't help but feel... Underwhelming... Her power felt minimal compared to the other heroes that had gathered to protect their home world, she felt like she wouldn't be able make a difference. She almost wondered: 'why bother fight if all you were going to do was get in the way?'
They were coming soon...
She sighed a long drawn out sigh as she slowly leaned her head back trying to to let the warm sun clear her mind. Her thoughts persisted to criticize and question herself however. She growled shaking her head. She had to try and focus! Doubts were going to get her nowhere! She ended up shifting her gaze to the sand below that was stuck between her toes. A thought crossed her mind as she watched the sand sift and shift beneath her.
Would she be ready? Could she be ready?
Her golden eyes narrowed as she watched each grain of sand fall to the ground below. Though each grain was there and technically part of a whole each grain became indistinguishable from the next within the sea of sand... That's how she felt... Indistinct... Weak... Like a grain of sand lost in a desert.
She would rise above...
Maeve roared out, stopping her foot in the sand as a surge of black and red electricity coiled up her leg and sparked around her form. “I can't be weak... I refuse!” Maeve roared out stomping the ground creating a pulse of energy around her. Her eyes began to glow with a dark power as she let her aura spike around her. The demonic impulses she was feeling had to have been the answer in order to be strong! She had to be violent! With violence she could dominate any that dared to stand her way! These twisted thoughts brewed in her mind as the suppressive runic tattoos began to burn away letting her emotion and will run unrestricted.
She would rise above...But at what cost?
She roared out her dark aura reaching it's peak with a fierce wave as her unrestricted power easily tripled her former strength. She drew her blade, letting her power course through it in the form of crackling electricity. She hissed as she stepped forward and cut the fearsome cleaver with enough force to send a powerful gust of wind before her. She laughed, watching the sand disperse before she began eagerly swiping her blade a few times creating small shockwaves of wind with each powerful slice. "Hehehehehe~ Why don't I let myself go more often?! I'm so much more powerful like this! These weights?! They're nothing! Not with this power! It feels good not to hold myself back!!!" She roared creating another explosion of energy that sent the sand around her up in a cloud. ....Due to the increasing frustrations of fruitless training, Maeve had given into her demonic will! The demonic swordswoman let go of any semblance of restraint and bathed in the full destructive power she had bubbling in her heart at a near constant basis. There was no need to compose herself and hold back! She wanted the power of destruction! She wanted the power to dominate! Though deep down she always wanted to protect her new home and her new family right now she wanted to feel truly powerful before eventually being beaten down by the otherworldly threat that loomed in the distance! Little did she know however, another was about to interrupt her little demonic tirade
“The reason you don't let yourself go is because I taught you better than this.”
Maeve stopped, all dark thoughts ceasing as she suddenly heard a familiar scold. The glow in her eyes flickered and faded as her tattoos slowly reformed at the shock. She turned around slowly.
“...A-Akemi?” She stammered as she slowly turned.
Standing before her was the familiar fox but...Different. She was smaller, much smaller, and much younger looking than before. She stood close to 4'6 had a cute round face with wide eyes and an incredibly lithe build making her look more like a girl than an ancient demon trickster. She also had five missing tails leaving her with four short impossibly fluffy fox tails. Her outfit was the same, just shrunken to fit her new child-like form, she even had a smaller paper fan! The smaller, four tailed kitsune smiled softly before giving an adorable little twirl and stretching out her arms. “Ta-Daaaa~” She called out in a sweet, singsong tone.
“Akemi!” Maeve said in astonishment watching her do her little show-off twirl for her. “What happened?!” She asked, rubbing her eyes at the sight as if she might be seeing things.
“Let's just say I had to cut a deal with someone in order to be able to return to the mortal realm... A deal that cost me dearly...My power's sealed away my dear Maeve, I'd wager I'm weaker than you in this current body of mine.” She said looking to the dragoness with a soft frown.
“Weaker?! Akemi I don't know if you know this but the saiyans are on their way! They aim to take the planet for themselves! I need all the help I can get, weaker or not can you please help... Help me save my family and friends.” Maeve pleaded with her mentor, the desperation obvious in her voice.
“Unfortunately Maeve, in my current state I'm in no position to fight.” She said with a light frown, causing Maeve's head and hopes to sink a bit.”However, I can still aid you...My body may have weakened but my knowledge is as strong as ever! Though it's a bit earlier than I'd like, the saiyans have forced my hand.” Maeve looked up as the kitsune pressed a hand on her armored shoulder. “My dear~ I'm going to be unlocking the rest of your magic. The power of the elements will be yours to command! With their power your combat capability shall increase far beyond your current level!” She said giving the dragoness a playful wink.
“A-are you serious Akemi?! That would be...It would be incredible!” Maeve said shooting up with enthusiasm. The prospect of finally attaining the elements like she did water earlier was certainly an exciting one, especially given just how powerful of a buff the water enhanced Serene State had given her.
“Indeed I am... But lets get out of this foul desert before we begin yes?” With a nod, Maeve would follow the smaller kitsune out of the desert so her elemental training could begin...
“You must be swift ...Like the ever blowing Wind...”
Maeve opened her eyes as a hurricane of force suddenly slammed into her. “W-What!”She cried out from the sudden torrent of pressure. The fierce wind howled all around her seemingly from nowhere as she fought just to stand still. “W-What's going on?!” Maeve yelled out, hoping Akemi would somehow guide her in this rampaging maelstrom of wind that threatened to blow her away. She kept pushing and the wind only howled harder and harder.
“Why do you fight against it?” Akemi's voice came suddenly clear as day despite the nearly deafening force of the rampaging winds threatening to knock the dragoness over at any moment.
“B-Because! I don't want to be blown away!” Maeve cried out as she took her sword and stabbed it into the ground of her mindscape anchoring herself to the floor.
“Don't fight the wind, you can't force yourself to control it... If you do you'll only upset it. Play with the wind, dance with it and let it guide you. It will protect you.” Akemi's voice rung out once more coaching Maeve on what to do. Though the demonic swordswoman hesitated, she eventually let go and trusted in her master's words and to a greater extent... The wind's whims.
She closed her eyes and let go of her blade/support. In an instant the raging wind stopped and a gentle breeze picked Maeve up. She opened her eyes looking down as the wind lightly glided her through the air as if it were carrying her. “W-Woah!” Maeve let out a shocked cry but didn't try struggling or resisting. She had to trust in the wind.
“Excellent! Maeve. Excellent!” Akemi said materializing before Maeve. The kitsune was happily clapping seeing Maeve trusting the wind and playing with it. “Now, Maeve. Try moving with the wind, let it guide and protect you. Trust in it.” She ordered pointing to the girl
The dragoness nodded before she began to move as instructed. While following the wind, it would push Maeve along in powerful gusts increasing her speed to the point where she could leave afterimages behind. Trusting and playing with the wind made her as swift as it.
“I think you've got a decent understanding of how the power of wind works now. Utilizing it in battle will allow you to dodge attacks much easier! Remember Maeve, always trust in the wind. It will protect you.” Akemi explained as she pressed her hand to the dragoness' forehead. With a vibrant emerald flash Maeve could suddenly feel a whirlwind of magic surge around her. “Oh... Oh wow! I can feel the wind guiding me!”
“Excellent, it seems the wind is a good fit for you as well! You've gotten a grasp on both water and wind so easily now, perhaps I shouldn't have tried to pace you. You're a natural.” Akemi said praising her pupil sincerely.
“Now, lets move on to the next trial shall we?” She said, confident that Maeve could handle it now.
“...Your body needs to be sturdy...Sturdy and tough as the Earth itself...”
Maeve opened her eyes and found herself standing on a tall stone platform thousands of feet in the air with her arms coiled in chains. She paused looking to the chains only to see what they were attached to. Her golden eyes widened as she saw two giant stone squares at her size. These massive blocks were arguably 3 times her size and they were attached to each arm at opposite ends.
“To master the Earth, you must earn it's respect, if you are as tough as it it will be yours to command.” Akemi's voice rang out.
“Earn it's respect? How-” Her question was cut off as the ground beneath her began to shift. She blinked, curious to what was going on only to see that the platform she was standing on was getting narrower and the two blocks attached to her limbs were starting to topple over. “Oh no!” Maeve cried out lowering her stance as the blocks began their descent, the extra slack in the chain starting to unwind as the heavy weight came hurtling down. She was going to feel the tug soon. She just knew it.
“Be sturdy Maeve! Don't give any ground or it's over!” Akemi called out. Maeve, fearful at first would suddenly stand tall and let her aura explode around her. She roared out, her muscles flexing and building as her body exploded with demonic energy. She continued yelling as she exploded with raw power. When the blocks finally reached the end of the chain her body didn't move, not an inch.
A golden orange aura began to seep off her form as she inhaled suddenly taking the Earth's breath as her own. She let out a low exhale as she began to lift up the blocks, channeling that mighty Breath of the Earth through her sturdy figure so she could lift the massive stone with her will alone. She brought the blocks up beside her and set them down panting lightly as the breath finally left her lungs.
“Wonderful Maeve! Simply wonderful!” Akemi said as she appeared beside her, removing the chains with a snap. She pressed her hand against the dragoness' forehead and with a vibrant golden flash Maeve could feel the power of the earth itself seep into her. She felt heavier but in a good way, as if she were grounded and more secure as she stood. “What you experienced was “The Breath of the Earth.” This mighty power allows you to command even the most stubborn of rock to protect you and your allies with a shield of stone. Unlike the Wind Protection these abilities can be charged with your own energy making them able to withstand stronger and stronger attacks! Always know when it's best to charge and when it's best to release it could save your life!”
“Understood... The next trial is fire right?” She panted, her gut telling her that this was going to be the worst one yet.
“Indeed...Using your fiery spirit but not being consumed by it is indeed a challenge but I feel you will be able to master this the easiest.” Akemi assured the dragoness with a smile before things faded once more for the last of the trials.
"...You must embody all of that.... With your spirit ablaze...With your heart fueled by Fire!”
For the final trial, Maeve found herself standing at the edge of a crimson inferno that was raging with a bounty of flames. She blinked, shielding her eyes from the intense light. She looked around and saw the fire stretch as far as she could see. There was no way around, it was just her and a path of crimson flames. She thought about taking her sword and testing to see if the fire was some sort of illusion to trick her but found that it wasn't at her side.
“Fateburn is in the center of the blaze, retrieving your sword will be enough to prove you truly have a heart fueled by fire.” Maeve paused, looking nervously to the mystic flames burning around her and reached out slowly.
“Ah!” She recoiled her hand instantly, an intense burn almost numbing her hand but when she went to inspect the damage she found there was none. She looked puzzled only to hear Akemi speak to her once more.
“These flames will burn your very spirit, the only way to get through is to strengthen it with a fire of your own. Walk forward with courage and confidence and the flames will only make your spirit burn brighter.” Akemi explained, offering her final guidance. The rest was up to Maeve.
The dragoness took a moment to look at the flame and closed her eyes for a moment. Images of her friends flashed before her eyes suddenly: Scampi and the Shrimp family, Akemi, Mr. Green, Etoru, Sala, Zerori, and the others on the lookout. She thought of her 'rival' Kaula, the homunculus Rei, the mad demon Lunar, the saiyan elite Radasha and finally the super saiyan queen Zucceta aka “Lady Death.” Maeve opened her eyes slowly and already found herself halfway through the flames. She looked down, her heart blazing in her chest with a noticeable light as she thought of her friends and her foes. Each face goaded her on for different reasons. Some provided her hope while others served as a reminder as to why she fought.
She ended up reaching the center of the raging inferno and clasped her clawed hand over the hilt of the blade. With determination she would yank it free of it's prison. She let out a yell as she held up the blade and watched as all the crimson flame was drawn into her and the mighty sword. She could feel a rush of energy flood her spirit as the flames of purgatory mixed with her blazing soul!
With a bright scarlet flash Maeve felt the full power of fire flowing through her.
“With these flames, I'll be the swordswoman of fire! I'll use the elements themselves to bring justice to any who dare threaten my home!” Maeve cried out, her aura exploding around her as a strange sense of new power rushed through her as all the elements mixed. “Be warned Zucceta! I'm coming for you!” She cried out. Her aura exploding around her.
Akemi appeared beside the dragoness and placed a hand on her shoulder, her tails wagging happily. “Good job Maeve... I knew you could do it!”
Elsewhere... A figure looms over the meditating forms of both Akemi and Maeve. Feeling the sudden surge of power in the dragoness the figure would smirk before jumping off.
“Dearest sister... When you master that power I know you will be coming for my title... I'll be waiting... Don't disappoint me.”
