(This is Vi-Poi’s rebuild thread. Please deduct 1,000 Zeni from his account at its conclusion)
The high officers and members of the Blue Banner Army stood in the brightly lit lab, each nervously awaiting the test results. Most of the yttrium alloy had been recovered and reforged, along with his specialized V.V. Parts. Even base traces of his FTL circuitry – the most expensive part of the Poitonium lines – had been recovered from the scraps and debris, though the rest of his body had been a total loss. The Magitek Megacore, which represented his processor and his Tuffle Reactor wrapped into one, was completely intact thanks to the quick thinking of Reikiko. Before the other pieces were added – his new externals and outer shell, his skin, his Megacore would have to withstand several batteries of tests. The first test had been a standard power cycling, and it came back positive. The reactor worked. The second test, before bringing his power pack online, was a deep scan for any traces of the Red Ribbon Virus. To everyone’s immense relief, the long hours of supercomputer analysis under Dr. Slouch and his team’s wary eye came back completely clean.
The Virus was gone, forever. But to be doubly certain, an ingenious firmware function was devised by Dr. Slouch, which would make composite interfacing with non-registered heptadecimals impossible for the android. He could never become infected again.
Next came the memory test, and it was the longest and most chancy. Would his personality be intact? Would his memories remain? There was no telling what sorts of things such shocks of spirit energy might do to Vi-Poi’s heart. Had the nanoscopic circuits in his Megacore been degaussed by the extreme energy differentials? It was a possibility. The slowly ramped up energy to the robotic heart, waiting with agitation for the soul to stir.
Vi-Poi was in a dark, cool place. It stretched endlessly, all around him, and in it he was utterly alone. It was not a disturbing fact. It was a peaceful one. Time seemed to stretch on to oblivion here, or have little to no meaning. He wasn’t himself, not exactly. He was an idea of himself. He knew he should feel a body, a being, but there was nothing to grasp on to but his own thoughts. In what must have been eons, his thoughts expanded further into this void, an inexorable inflation. His mind unfurled and grew , pressing against its horizons. He could feel something else now, the comforting presence of his oldest friend. Poi had never really left him, not entirely. They were of one spirit. With this newfound energy he pressed further, reaching out beyond infinity, determined to pierce what was there. What was beyond.
He felt something hard on the edges. Something weighed heavy upon him. The entire void was sinking into him. All of his comfort, all of his peace was gone, replaced by this weighty sensation. In another millennium of confused thought, he grasped what this weight was. His body. His yttrium frame. He could feel the hard edges of his Magitek Megacore. It was feeding him energy.
Vi-Poi was alive.
He opened his eyes. It seemed they had rebuilt most of his skull, along with his optics. They’d even given him eyelids – probably more for their comfort than his own. He was inside a long glass vat contained in a lab that was labeled ‘. He had no lower jaw, or tongue to speak of yet, and two clamps held his head firmly in place. Of course, he didn’t need one to speak. His voice came from a synthesizer in his throat. “Where am I?” He asked, his large blue eyes peering about the sterile room. The faces were familiar, and some names immediately leapt at him. Staff Officer Fuchsia. General Chartreuse. Major Vermilion. Dr. Slouch. They smiled and laughed in relief at seeing him activate.
“You’re at Site A.” Dr. Slouch responded. “You’ve had quite the episode.”
Vi-Poi blinked slowly. “I remember what happened. The usurper… I was aware for all of it, mostly. Just… unable to engage any of my hardware.” He said, flexing a skeletal hand in reassurance.
“It’s all gone now.” The genius doctor said.
“I know.” Vi-Poi replied. “I can detect nothing besides me… though I’m more than what I was before. Oblivion seems to have left its mark on me.” He said. “Let’s get to work.”
His head was the first thing completely reconstructed. Attached to his yttrium spine, it could now swivel freely, and peer at the rest of his body as its flesh was being restored. He was suspended in a pink liquid that slowly solidified into synthetic musculature.
“I’m giving you muscles made with our new Poitonium polymer, the same stuff in your circuitry, and making room in your posterior for additional upgrades.” Dr. Slouch said with a chuckle.
“Upgrades.” Vi-Poi agreed. “I will need them, I bet.” He said with a sad smile. The liquid was slowly draining from his neck down, revealing the new pale snythflesh of his body.
“You will need that and more, sir.” General Chartreuse agreed. “Though we have cleansed the virus, much of the public is skeptical. Most of the government wants you deactivated, permanently.”
“That’s not an option.” Vi-Poi said, closing his eyelids. “I’m a better weapon for Earth than I am a paperweight in a lab.”
“Yes.” Major Vermilion said, “And we will need you to act in the coming days. The Solar Saiyan Empire is growing bolder now that the Arcosian Empire has collapsed.”
“They will attack.” Vi-Poi said in agreement. “I know their Queen well.” As the last of the pink goo drained and his skin was blown dry, he waggled his toes in a very human fashion and reached for a towel. “What is our military status? I’m still… getting used… to being live on the network again.”
Staff Officer Fuchsia shook her head. “The Volunteer Corps are at sixty percent. Our Special Corps fared more robustly. Seventy percent.”
Vi-Poi groaned. “Not good numbers.”
They blinked in surprise at his human emotion and exchanged glances.
Making his way for his armor and battle suit, he quickly changed. “Feels good to be home.” He said, before turning to them all with a serious expression on his pale face. “I can perceive the improvements already. Most of them are mental, probably due to the Megacore... and to Poi.” After thinking a moment he sighed. “I need to resign from office. Send my letter to the President immediately. Release a press statement that I have stepped down from the position of Special Secretary of General Affairs.”
“B-but…” Major Vermilion protested incredulously, “The elections! Blue Banner will lose our grasp on the Parliament.”
“So be it.” Vi-Poi said. “I fought to help this world, not to enslave it. The people will not respect my rule, not any longer, not after what the Virus had done. I need to show them that I hold myself accountable above all others, even when things moved beyond my control. Especially them.” He turned to General Chartreuse. “Contact KAOS. Let them know I’m awake immediately. If any of them require a meeting, have them link directly. Also… the Volunteer Corps divisions. They will be cut by a factor of nine tenths. The money saved will go immediately into a fund generated for the purpose of safeguarding the lives of any Namkeian refugees on Earth, and the rapid reconstruction of North Metro.”
“We could use that money elsewhere. We’re being sued by every city, state, and county on the planet.” Major Vermilion said wryly.
“I’ll tend to that.” The petite android said with the wave of a hand. “I’ve negotiated with Arcosian Empresses and Saiyan pirates. How hard can navigating a courtroom in West Capitol be?”
