How close to home he hit. It seems Saiyans had a penchant for instilling daddy issues in their kids. At least Articho had aspirations for his father, as violent as they were. How would Raisu react if he met his own? Probably not too differently. Raisu frowned. Sad to say it, but he did feel the strong urge to punch his father in the gut and call it quits with him. If they ever met. Which was entirely unlikely. Earth was pretty big. And the universe was even bigger. No way his father was still on Earth.
And then Articho asked about his own family. What to say? How much to say even? He could tell him a bit.
"Me? Well, I know a bit, from what my mom told me. Not that I ever met him. He left a bit after I was born. I guess he thought that was all he had to do. Make sure I pop out and that I had a tail."
He gave a single, harsh laugh.
"No, all I know is what he told my mom when he was hitting the bottle and what she told me when she pissed off about him not being around. He was a wanderer, apparently not cut out for real combat. He told her that. When he was drunk, of course. I don't think he'd have admitted it if he was sober."
Funny how his father had been wanderer himself. Like father, like son. Unfortunatly.
"Now my mom, I lived with her. We fought a lot when I was a kid. Guess I was too much on a little brat. We get on pretty well now. She's a secretary, so she was busy a lot of the time when I was a kid. My grandma moved in with us for a few years to help take care of me."
How long had it been since he'd told anyone about himself? A long while. But it was nice to talk.

Articho had to laugh. The trend of Saiyan parents leaving their children behind seemed pretty common among hybrids. Maybe they should start a support group of some sort. Hybrids Anonymous or something like that. Despite its unlikely chance at existence, it'd be a good way to burn off some of his frustration to someone who had the same problem as he did, rather than his mother. He felt guilty every time he blew up at her when she mentioned his father. She didn't deserve it at all, not with how hard she had tried to raise him right.
"My mother told me my father was a warrior, like most other Saiyans. Middle class or something like that," the hybrid explained. "I'm not sure why he came to Earth in the first place, but he met my mother while he was here and here I am." He grinned slightly at that last bit and nodded in response to what Raisu had to say about his mother. Articho felt a little bad for him. He at least had his mother to turn to and Master Yamado took the role of a father figure in his life. He got lucky with how his life turned out.
"Not to impose, but having a good relationship with my mother made my life pretty good even with my father gone," Articho said. He shrugged after saying it. "Just a suggestion, I guess."

A warrior father? Seems common among the Saiyans. What compelled them to leave Vegeta and take to the galaxy, leaving unwanted children in their wake? Was it some kind of cultural thing? Or just a stereotype, one that seemed to be victim of confirmation bias? Who knew. Raisu supposed that it really did not matter. All that mattered was that he was here.
And then he mentioned that it would be a good idea to have a good relationship with his mother. And Raisu thought he did. Maybe not as good as it could be, but it wasn't as if they hated each other. No, not now.
"Well, we get along pretty well. She doesn't like me traveling, of course. But, well, it's not like she kicked me out or I left because I needed to get away from her. I just kinda wanted to find myself."
He could at least call her more often, he decided. Yes, he was certainly bad about that. Maybe in the next town he'd find a phone and call home. No, he thought. No maybe about it. It was time he took responsibility in that regard. But that was for later. He turned his head towards Articho and nodded.
"So," he began, "Any interesting stories from the life of a hybrid?"

Articho nodded in understanding. "That's fair enough," he agreed. "From my own experience, my mother held on pretty tightly when I was around. I think she was afraid of losing me like she lost my father. I try my best to keep her happy and stay alive. And given what I've gotten myself into, that's a full time job." He laughed at his own morbid joke of his possible death at the hands of Vi-Poi. He was scared, yes, but he had the feeling he would make it somehow. He had his senzu bean and it always felt like someone was watching his back. Hopefully he didn't end up with any holes in his chest.
Articho thought for a moment. Interesting stories as a hybrid? Nothing really came to mind, but he had interesting stories to tell. "Well, I'm not sure if this counts," the hybrid started, "but I once helped save the Western Capitol from vampires. That was pretty interesting and a store gave me a huge discount on garlic bread for life." It was funny that those store owners had such a good sense of humor despite what had happened and the terror they must have felt.

"What? Really? That's pretty awesome, man."
It was certainly an impressive feat. More than Raisu had accomplished. Much more. What had he done in the past months? Fail to save a few villages and beat up a person for cash in back alley brawling? His resume, so to speak, was incredibly lacking. At least he could say he was well traveled. Which wasn't bad, considering it had been his original goal for himself. But still, he found himself impressed with Articho's achievement.
He turned to the other hybrid and shot him an apprasing glance. He certainly looked the part of someone who could manage that. Not unlike that of a hero.
"So, you must be pretty strong then?"
He asked that question, already knowing the answer. Of course he was strong. He could feel it. But was he really feeling the man's full power? He doubted it.

Articho shrugged in response. "It was pretty cool, I guess," he agreed. "But thinking back, the death toll had been huge. A lot of people had been transformed into those monsters and we had to kill them all. But we managed to save a good number of people that hadn't transformed and the city recovered pretty well. People who live on Earth are pretty adaptable, it seems, and you can always count on them to bounce back from a tragedy. It's uplifting, yeah?" The young hybrid smiled at Raisu, feeling much better about the battle with Vi-Poi. Even if Realigner Red did win, he was certain that Earth's people would bounce back somehow. They had done it plenty of times before.
Again, Articho shrugged. He supposed he was strong. He wasn't the strongest by any means, but he wasn't a pushover. Until someone upped the ante and transformed. Then he was screwed and it frustrated him beyond belief. He was all for fighting stronger opponents, but if he couldn't even lay a finger on them, it was the worst thing ever to him. "Not strong enough," was all he said. The hybrid looked at the other hybrid quizzically. "Why?"

The other hybrid was right. The people of Earth were a hardy bunch. Very little could keep them down and out for long. It was impressive, really. They were like a stubborn plant or something. It was kind of funny to think about. This was the blood in his veins, alongside the Saiyan blood. Maybe he was more proud of the latter.
The other hybrid shrugged, saying he wasn't strong enough. Stronger than Raisu, but most were it seemed. And then he asked why.
"Always cool to find someone stronger than yourself. Puts a certain... Fire, in me. You get what I mean?"

Yet again, Articho shrugged. He had fought his fair share of stronger opponents, though he didn't find much enjoyment in most of them. They were always trying to destroy something or take over the world. It wasn't a matter of testing himself. It was a matter of life and death.
"I wish I could say so, but most people that are stronger than me are psychotic in some way," he replied. "But that isn't to say that I don't enjoy a good fight when presented the opportunity. That's why I'm trying to achieve Super Saiyan. I want to be able to take on the stronger opponents and enjoy it while I do. Does that make sense?"

Raisu nodded. It did make sense. He continued to focus his gaze on Articho. He had a good point. There were some crazy people out there. There were some powerful people out there. And then there were crazy, powerful people. Somebody had to stand against them. Raisu was glad to see somebody else in this world wanted justice.
"Right, I feel it. I feel the same way. It's just... Hard, you know? To go against people who could kill you without lifting a finger."
It was a scary thought. There were people in this world who could destroy entire planets uncontested. And here he was, struggling to break rocks on occasion. He shook his head.
"But you know what, I love this place. I would die for it."
He frowned and looked at the ground as he walked. Would he die for it? He knew the answer to that. If he could make even the tiniest of difference, he would. But it's not like he was a Super Saiyan, whatever that was. He looked back up and turned to Articho yet again. He thought of something.
"Sorry to change the subject, but what exactly is a Super Saiyan?"
He grinned sheepishly.
"I'm, uh, not exaclty well informed."

"You'd be surprised how easy it is to face death head on," Articho said, running his fingers along the length of a bamboo stalk. It was strange to think how quickly he had flown to fight against the vampires and Vi-Poi. He got the feeling that whenever danger or a possible fight was imminent, his sense of self preservation turned off for a moment so he would go towards it without inhibition. The hybrid would never be able to explain why he did it, most likely because it was a mix of a number of things. There were too many factors that came into play for him to list and think about that he never argued the feeling. "I can't explain it, but once you see the threat, it would take being physically held back to not fight for what it threatens."
Articho stopped walking at Raisu's next question, a puzzled look on his face. How did he explain something he wasn't? He had seen it, sure, but he felt like doing would be different from observing. He scratched his head as he thought. He could probably just give him the barebones description and that would suffice. "Well, I guess it's a some sort of transformation that helps a Saiyan or half Saiyan tap into a new source of power. They're much stronger than any base Saiyan and have golden hair and teal colored eyes. It's pretty impressive to see." But probably better to actually achieve, Articho thought bitterly.

"Ah, I see. Can't say I know much about anything in regards to Saiyans."
It was true. His knowledge was barebones at best. Though he learned little by little. Such as this revelation about the Super Saiyans. What kind of training did you have to do to undertake that? It must be incredibly hard to alter oneself on a basic level. And the power it would take... He could hardly imagine. Was Articho close? He must be. Even more impressive. Would he ever reach that echelon? Somehow, he doubted it. He wasn't particularly skilled or strong, but he was certainly more than average human. But a Saiyan? He didn't even know how he compared.
"I hope you get there, man. It sounds like a great thing."
If half of what Articho had said about himself was true, he really did hope for it. The people could stand to have someone like that on their side.

"I've been learning, piece by piece," Articho replied. It helped that he interacted with a few of Saiyans and half Saiyans. They would teach him, possibly unwittingly, and even the most mundane thing helped him understand why his father left. "It's like learning anything: it takes time, patience, and asking the right person the right questions." Articho smiled at Raisu, then nodded in thanks. He needed all the encouragement he could.
Articho glanced up at the sky. The sun was beginning to dip into the west and Ninjin had told him to come back. He figured before nightfall would be a good time. "I'm afraid this is where we part ways," Articho said. He stuck out his hand for Raisu to shake before floating up into the air. "We'll meet again. I want to see you flying by then!" The hybrid smiled broadly before rocketing in the direction of Ninjin's house.

It was just like learning like anything else, was it? He grinned at that. Raisu understood what it took to learn. He'd done it so many years ago when he learned ki manipulation. There was a lot to learn from everybody in this world. If only everybody was open to that idea. He smled at the hybrid, even as he said it was time to part ways. Articho extended his hand for a handshake and Raisu took him up on that, pumping his arm quickly as he took the other hybrid's hand.
Then Raisu watched him float into the sky. He spoke, telling Raisu he'd need to learn to fly.
"You got it, man!"
Raisu's smiled widened as watched the hybrid fly away. He'd learn soon enough. He had a goal now. But for now, Raisu continued walking down the way they'd been going. After all, it was the journey, not the destination at times. He might as well enjoy it for what it was. Raisu whistled as he walked.
