Peis BP
“Closing in on target Cap’n.”
Peis stood on the bridge of his ship surrounded by his crew. The speaker was the pilot, the smallest and weakest of the group, clearly recognisable by the strange manner in which he pronounced some of his words. His name was Korn, a shrewd man, and clever, which in Peis’ view made up for his inability to fight. More than once his quick thinking had got them out of a tight situation, although Parnsap liked to argue that strength was more useful.
“How’d you want to approach this?”
Their prey hung their before them, an ugly grey blot on the backdrop of glowing stars and vibrant planets. It was a simple ship, cargo they suspected. They had been tracking it for a couple of days now, against Korn’s protests. He claimed that, “Something seemed off”, but the rest of the crew waved aside his protests. He walked over to the panels at the front of the bridge, leaning over them and placing a hand on the back of Korn’s chair. He surveyed the ship, before consulting the monitors, zooming in on what he assumed would be the weak points of the vessel, assessing targets and running through plans in his head. The pilot turned to him.
“Well?”
Peis stood back up straight, finalising the few details of his plan. He gestured across to the biggest of the crew, his second in command, Parsnap. Tapping his scouter, he hoped the big man would understand his signal. Just as he had hoped, he walked towards the front of the ship, and activated his sensor. A wide grin spread across his face as the results of the scan came in. He held out a closed palm before lifting four fingers.
“None over 1200.”
Peis grinned alongside his friend. This would be easy. Too easy, he could almost guarantee Korn would say. If there was one problem he had with his pilot, it would be that once he got an idea no one could shake it from his mind. He turned his attention back to the ship. He could see Korn wanting to point out something, and reluctantly he motioned for him to do so. The pilot gapsed as if he had been holding his breath.
“The guns Cap’n! The guns!”
Peis was starting to grow tired of his pilot’s incessant whining. They had had to put up with this for the past two days, and it lost its “charm” quickly.
“What about the guns, Korn?” he asked sternly.
The pilot looked taken aback by the frustrated response. Peis felt bad, he’s just trying to help, he thought to himself. Parsnap didn’t seem fazed in the slightest.
“They have plenty, yet they haven’t fired. I mean, I doubt it would do anything, but most we’ve fought tried to resist. It don’t smell right.”
Parsnap started to look agitated, clearly frustrated by Korn’s cautiousness. He stepped forward, looking to intervene, but Peis motioned for him to stop. He didn’t want any friction between his crew. Parsnap stepped back, fuming. Peis didn’t mind though, the killing would calm him down. He clapped his hands together, looking to lighten the mood.
“Alright, here’s the plan.”
He placed his hand on the monitor, pulling apart two fingers and twisting their position to zoom and rotate the image. He tapped a couple of extra buttons, adjusting the resolution, and the image became clearer. It showed a metal plate, shining and clearly newer than the rest of the ship, disjointedly fitted, dented from where it had been hammered to fit.
“Simple job. I’ll blow this open, me and Par here will kill them all and retrieve the cargo. The rest of the crew can rest this one out, don’t bother stirring them today. We’ll need the oxygen masks though.”
Korn quickly scampered out of the room further into the ship as Peis and Parsnap approached the exit hatch. Peis noticed his companion was looking uncomfortable.
“What’s eating you up?”
Parsnap tried to contort his face to hide his emotion. Peis looked at him condescendingly, trying to make it clear that he didn’t approve.
“It’s just… There was a fifth signal… Power rating was only 9 though, so I thought I wouldn’t mention it…”
Peis scratched his chin, considering his options. A power level of 9 was no threat, but it confused him. A hostage maybe? Some kind of beast?
“We’ll see when we get there. Can’t be much of a threat.”
Before Parsnap could respond, if he even meant to, Korn returned carrying the two masks. He handed one to either of them, before reminding them how to return the cargo to the bay, which drew a sigh from Parnsap. Satisfied, he returned to his seat. Peis pulled the mask over his head, pulling his long hair out of the way. This was a problem not shared by his friend, him being completely bald.
“Ready Korn.”
The pilot pushed a button on his panel, and the hatch slowly creaked open. Soon they were standing atop the ship, struggling to keep themselves atop the ship as it raced to keep pace with their target. They glanced across at each other and nodded, raising their power levels. Peis placed his right arm behind their back, and started to direct his ki there. The vague outline of a sphere started to appear, tinted red.
“FIRE-“
The outline took substance, red and yellow ki enveloped his hand. It grew in size as he charged it, and he readied his arm for the throw. The scouter targeted the metal plate, and he triangulated his aim.
“BOMB!”
His arm followed through with the throw. The red ball spiralled through the air, and Peis followed its path intently, willing it to hit its target. The Firebomb connected with the plate, and a hole was blown in the side of the ship. Peis bent his knees, readying to jump.
“Go!”
The two Saiyans jumped in unison, spiralling in a choreographed attack in which they crossed each other’s paths in order to avoid any incoming blasts. Luckily none came. They landed through the hole into the room, and both turned on their scouters. The same four signatures, now racing towards them.
“Fan out.”
Peis ran out of the room through a different door to his companion. A punch knocked him to the floor. Pain seared through his face as he hit the deck. A kick flared his rib cage as he flew onto his back. Standing over him was a short Saiyan, with short, spiked black hair. He bore a scar vertically through his left eye. Thrusting his arms forward he fired a ki blast at the chest of the assailant, allowing him to regain his feet before another wave of attacks were launched. He blocked these, before a parry allowed him an avenue of attack. He first aimed for the chest, before a head jab was dodged before a knee to the groin of his attacker floored him. He reached behind him.
“Firebomb!”
The charged ki blast hit the man in the stomach, and he screamed as it burnt through his armour and seared through flesh and bone. Peis grinned as he watched the man burn alive, revelling in the torture. The ki blast finally exploded, leaving only a charred corpse behind. He spun quickly and scanned the ship, hoping to find Parsnap. He felt a power level fade. He panicked for a moment before realising it was one of the enemy. Still, he was fighting two, and he wouldn’t last for long. Sprinting through the ship he hoped he would get there in time. The wind was knocked out of him as a flying tackle round his waist knocked him back. They rolled on the floor, struggling for control, pushing and pulling as they tried to get on top. Rolling on top, Peis broke free of the Saiyan’s grip, and landed a punch on his face. Three more punches and the struggle was over, Peis pulling his hands away with blood pasted on his white gloves. He stood up, and turned towards the room Parsnap was in. He sighed, there he was, they’d won. Korn was right though, something had been wrong. Those soldiers were much stronger than the scouter suggested, they must’ve been supressing their power levels. Peis cursed, he should’ve guessed that they could do that. He started to stroll towards Parsnap before stopping, paralysed. His power level was gone. How? How could this happen? Then he remembered. The fifth power level. He felt his anger start to rise. Running into the next room he screamed when he saw a Saiyan standing over the still body of his friend. He was wearing red armour, with long hair draped over his shoulders. His scouter started to smoke as the power level rose.
“GET AWAY FROM HIM!”
Peis leaped forward, his fist infused with ki. The blow launched the stranger forward and he hit a wall. How is he so strong?, he thought as he scooped Parsnap’s limp body, who was still breathing, up in his hands, and raced towards the escape pods. He placed the body in a pod, punched in the coordinates of a local inhabited moon, and fired it from its dock, watching his companion as he flew off into the distance. A strong hand gripped his neck and lifted his feet off of the ground. He struggled as his breathing was cut off, his mask having been damaged in the fight. His legs kicked uselessly, his hands unable to rip the tight grip clasping his neck. This is it, he thought, this is the end.
“This is the end for you, ‘Captain Peis.’”
The grip tightened. He saw a light appear in the distance, before a blinding light blinded him. He thought of all the people important to him that had been killed, his father, his brothers, all the innocents he’d seen butchered… and Parnsip. No, he thought, I can’t let them-him get away with this. Rage built up inside him as he felt energy rush back into his body. Then calm, he knew what to do. He let go of the fist round his neck.
“What are you doing? Oh I get it, accepting your defeat. I’m disappointed – I thought you’d put up more of a fight.”
He started to build the ki up in his fists, then reached behind him, and clutches the attacker’s head. The man cursed and tried to wrestle the grip free.
“FIREBOMB!”
The ki enveloped the Saiyan’s head as he screamed, and let go of his neck. Dropping and spinning on his heel in one fluid motion, he placed his hand on the chest of the screaming Saiyan.
“FIREBOMB!”
The red flame threw the Saiyan back, and his screaming intensified. The smoke of the fight swallowed him up until he was no longer visible. He slumped back on the wall, his energy finally depleted, and sighed. He was bleeding, but he would live. I should’ve listened to Korn, he thought again, But… but Parsnip… No. I can’t blame it on him… We need to pick him up… Where did I send him a-
“You didn’t think you’d get rid of me that easy, did you?”
No, no, no, he thought, not like this! He turned and crawled into the next open pod, and punched in similar coordinates to those he’d sent Parsnap to. The Saiyan’s face became visible, scarred and bleeding beyond belief. He punched the release and the pod flew out of the dock. He’d got away… but his crew… he’d sentenced them to their deaths. Soon enough, he heard an explosion. They’d known the risks, but he couldn’t help but blame himself. His scouter started to beep. What was this? A build-up of ki? He realised what had happened too late, steering his pod too late. The beam of ki glanced the pod and sent if of course, damaging the systems and injuring Peis even further. In the final moments he looked to the shooting star in the distance that he somehow knew was Parsnap. Goodbye, goodbye friend.
Part 2
The pod shook and jarred as Peis awoke with a start. He was crashing through the atmosphere of the planet at high speeds, spinning as he went. His body was numb at first, before he was flown to the other side of the pod and his spine flared up with pain. He grabbed onto a piece of metal jutting out to stabilise himself. He felt like his arm was going to tear off. Looking around for the controls he pushed himself towards them before attempting to level himself out. The sudden halt in spinning motion threw him backwards and he hit his spine on the wall. He tilted his head to the side, and out of the window he only saw the ground. He cursed. He tried to move towards the controls. Nothing. His tried to sit up. Nothing. He was paralysed. This. Can’t. Happen, he thought angrily. He glanced out the window again. The ground was approaching fast. Time was running out. He tried to move, and again he stayed stationary. He felt rage start to build, and energy flowed through him. He lifted an arm. Then his other. His neck, then head. The pod’s movement jarred and he slammed back down. Summing the energy up again, he pushed himself back up, and towards the controls. If he could just level the pod out…
He hit the water hard.
The pod submerged itself as it hit the water. Water covered the window as Peis prepared himself to break the window. He readied himself. One, two, three! His shoulder broke as it hit the window, cracking it from edge to edge. The window held, but water started to fill up the pod through the crack. His right arm hanging limp at his side, he raised his left, and started charging a ki blast. The blast, though weak, blew out the window and he swam as quickly as he could towards the surface, spluttering and struggling for breath as he broke through the water. Eyeing a small island up ahead he swam quickly towards it, careful to conserve his quickly depleting energy. Clambering up onto it he scanned for threats, his warrior instinct not abandoning him despite his condition. Seeing nothing he wondered what he was going to do. He had little energy, his rage and ki reserves running low, and was alone. He couldn’t rely on Parsnap anymore, or Korn, or any of his crew. Feeling the cold creeping up his legs he used the last of the energy to swing his whole body onto the bank and roll onto his back. Glancing to where he had just been, he saw the water was stained maroon, and his trail of blood was leading all the way back to the pod, a blot in the otherwise crystal clear water. He tried to chuckle but blood came out his mouth instead, pain filling his throat. How much of a sorry sight much I be?, he thought to himself, The proud “Captain Peis” about to bleed out on an alien world.” He had one last hope though. He raised his power level as high as he could, hoping someone would see the faint power and come to his rescue. If someone doesn’t arrive soon, I’ll be dead.
