Over the past several months, I've been witnessing good talk being made, but then I've been seeing people get angry, frustrated, and annoyed at each other, breaking down into flames that are shooing players young and old away... So, now I'm setting up this discussion to determine if the World of Dragon Ball: Souls' cbox should stay or just flat out be removed.
These past few months, every time I've got on late, or had to leave to go to work when there's a fuse being lit in this scenario, I come back to see that there's some sort of uproar over some problem. Emer, Athren, Toma, Kojima, Ninjin, Xicor, Hitake, Nai-Ran, President Bao, myself, and the rest of the site, whether they're guests, new players, or old players, have witnessed, caused, or became involved with some argument that has no reason to get so out of hand to the point where players end up leaving, after they've become heavily established here! This is when I have to say, "No, to hell with this...!"
I'm for removing the cbox now. Thoughts? Comments? Reason for keeping the cbox? Please elaborate.

Honestly? For all the shit it causes, I think we should keep the C-Box. I've been on sites without C-Boxes, and they're slow, sluggish, and lacking in members. It's hard to get to know people without a C-Box, and even harder to plot and talk without some form of communication aside from PM's.

I was once on a roleplay site a while back which had a c-box that often turned into an all-out shout-box. Still, it was an active little place. When the administrator there removed it without telling anyone, half the people left and the last post was in 2011.

Chatboxes are needed to keep talks up, and keep people interested in their peers - much like Toma said, without one, interest always dwindles in sites, and members simply forget about the sites since there's nothing to go back for when no posts are to be made soon. A chatbox can cause arguments, but really, we're here to roleplay and have fun. Drama happens, sure, but I expect someone who surfs the internet - one of the most vile and toxic places at times - to be able to walk away from an argument, or to calm down after a day or two. You can have disagreements - even heated ones - with people without starting to hate and despise each other. If someone's really fed up with another member, simply don't reply to what they say in the box, it is not that hard to do. I've started doing so with arguments I do not wish to be a part of on the site, for I know that my opinion on it is in the minority and I'd just make myself and others angry. Really, expecting some anger management skills or developing them should be expected of people. Removing the chatbox takes away a symptom, not the cause of arguments.

The cbox is an effective means for interactive relations. Live communication always trumps message style contact. Members like to say hi and virtually speak to others. There are of course negatives to this but it's a freedom of speech thing and you can't always control people's actions or words. If they really want to talk antagonize someone and there's no cbox, they'll simply message members if they're so motivated to do so. Then what? Get rid of PMing? There are simply SOME aspects of an RPG you just CAN'T fully control.
You can increase severity of punishment for breaking enforced rules though, or even higher mods to be "security" for cbox only, they can give warnings or ban. That's one idea but, I think removing the cbox entirely won't do anything beneficial for the site. Just my opinion.

Shout box moderation and rules need to be much stricter. Dragon ball attracts a lot of testosterone, it is a very male dominant series (no offense to Nai-monster), and so it is a powder keg for anger. One warning followed by week long bans should do the trick.

The thing about that, Pipa, is that this is the internet. If you start week-long banning people for w/e reason just because YOU don't like what they're saying (even if other members find no issue with it) and you're a mod, you get an Emer/Kojima situation where the banned person leaves, and the person who did the banning gets yelled at. I agree if someone is being purposfully toxic in the chat they should be dealt with, but escalating from 1 warning to immediate 7-Day bans can really turn people away from the site, especially one that claims to be democratic and able to voice their opinions. The problem with a lot of C-Box Rule Enforcements is that a lot of people skew the lines between someone voiceing their opinion (Which they should have every right to do) and them trying to piss people off and them getting banned because of it.
IMO, the only people who should be able to put bans into affect that are any longer than 10-15 minutes are Admins. Mostly because the Internet is a highly toxic environment, and if you get pissy just because of a C-Box argument then you really shouldn't be on the internet. If you don't have thick skin, stay out of the C-Box.
At most, if we really want an "volunteer" option for the C-box, add an option to tuck it away in the corner so you don't have to see it if you don't want to, or something.

Right...
The internet is also filled with porn. Should porn be allowed here as well? After all if you don't like the porn you can just leave.

I'm going to agree with Pipa on this one. A complete removal of the Cbox is taking things a bit too far, but some stricter rules/guidelines might be in order.
On the topic of what's out there on the internet, we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard than some of the things that are regularly found out there. Just because it exists on the internet doesn't mean it should exist here specifically. Otherwise why not just go hang out in places like 4chan? That's a place that exists on the internet that doesn't really have rules about behavior. ((I think, at least. Went there once years ago out of curiosity and have yet to return... >_>))

Its okay for a little spat here and there or for some heated debate. But when it gets to the point where almost every sentence has constant language or insults to someone be it anyone, staff or members, it gets to the point where it needs to stop. And it keeps happening, and it keeps getting worse. I feel the cbox should stay, but if you're not willing to follow the rules put in place then chances are you're going to get muted.
Some people can debate well enough and not get personal about it. Others get loud quickly and it turns into a mess that needs multiple people and a rather large mop to clean up. The rules definitely need reinforced a bit more strictly for the cbox. But a "1 warning long ban" thing really isn't good for the longevity of the site. I'm just going to say this. If you keep getting consistently warned over and over to stop, we can't just sit there and not do anything about it.

What you need is to have the mods actually have the power within the box. and have the members know when they say things to end it all. I for one am guilty of not listening but I will be the first to admit it. We need a no nonsense person that is only in charge of teh box. Their words need be absolute is what I am saying. When there is someone like that in the box people do not get out of line when they are there.

@pipa: To be honest? I wouldn't care if adult themes were added to the RP. I see no issues with it. Sex happens in real life and people have no issuses discuss it, so why not here? I don't mind either way, so yea. If you didn't like it, you could leave.

Toma, you may not mind it, and that's fine. However, we don't want this site to be strictly for adults. As it currently states in the rules, we're trying to remain friendly to 13-and-unders. Why would we want to alienate such an audience just so a couple of members can openly post adult content? We aren't a site that's dedicated to discussing sex. I'm sure there's no shortage of sites out there to do so, however this forum in particular is a forum that's dedicated to rping in the DBZ universe, a show that's not necessarily aimed at adults.

Do I really need to increase the level of grossness to prove my point? There are plenty of things that happen in real life that no one wants to see, and that is why rules are made.

Also this site is indirectly on Proboards. They have a rule about all boards staying at or below the PG13 line. Otherwise you will get strikes on the website and it may be removed.
