It had been a nice day this day. A gentle breeze rolled through the concrete jungle of the city, soft and cool to the touch. A gentle bathe of sunshine heated and illuminated the landscape, leaving a touch of warmth against the wind. The skies were blue like the purest lakes, with dabs of cotton-like clouds upon its skyline that slowly drifted against the current. It was a good day to be outside, to take in a big lungful of fresh air and enjoy the spring climate.
Sansho could have gone to many other places on the continent to enjoy his fair share of the season, but he had chosen this place. His journey to experience the world, to understand its inhabitants, and to gain knowledge of it all had brought him to places that bustled with civilization. It was not something he found comfort in, and many times did he clash with the humans in this realm, but it was a burden he had to bear.
West City was not much different either. The hulking demon walked amongst the much smaller, lither, more fragile people in the streets. There was never a pause of people gawking and staring at him, avoiding eye contact or pretending as though he wasn't even there—a wide birth wasn't even out of the question if it meant people could be away from him. It never bothered the warrior, though. Everywhere he went it was the same. The village where he dwelled near only recently started to treat him like a normal person, and they had known him for years.
The walk took Sansho to a small café on one of the city's high streets. The place looked quaint enough, and the interior didn't look bad either. If there was one thing Sansho couldn't fault humanity on, was their great food. It beat eating sand and raw demon flesh in the Demon Realm, at least.
A large hand placed on the door, pushing it open. He had to duck his head to clear the top of the doorframe as he stepped inside. The place wasn't awfully busy at this time, but those that did decide to dine here ended up having their meals disrupted. The usual mortal custom of shifting eyes and gazes to the doorway as another patron entered turned into shocked and anxious stares as they took in the demon's visage. Sansho gazed forwards, not paying anyone any attention. He walked to a table near the center of the room, and placed a hand on the backrest of a chair, pulling it out and taking a seat. His arms rested on the table top, gazing towards the counter ahead. He didn't know if there would be a waitress to take his order, but he waited for one nonetheless.

Strolling through the tables, the maid expertly removed and placed plates among the patrons, never missing a beat as she spoke cheerfully with every customer. The patrons of the Chinese Dragon had grown to love the maid and her cheerful demeanor, even if the occasional disturbance was inevitable as a result of her presence. The older customers already knew of the past disturbances and the entailing fights, and had already briefed the younger ones of what to expect. But, on peaceful days like this, all of the patrons were free to enjoy the presence of the happy, blonde girl. But,even that peace could be interrupted by unknown presences. A solid slap echoed through the cafe, as every eye shot to the door. Chaya’s gaze was the last, as the maid finished stacking all of the dirty plates onto a large platter. She could sense the powerful presence on the far side of the door, and braced herself internally for whatever came next. The door slid open slowly, as a large shadow loomed overhead. It stood taller than the doorway, and almost wider. Leaning down, a large, red-haired man stepped inside. The patrons all stared, as the easily seven-foot tall man walked inside. The maid looked up at him, and smiled at him. The huge person ignored her, strolling past towards the center of the room. He sat down, making the chair creak from the weight of his huge body. The girl was already walking towards the back with the tray. As she passed through the curtain, the girl immediately set the tray down in the sink. “So, is the thing out there good or evil?” Her gaze shot to the old man, who was cooking food in the wok. His gaze shifted towards her, and she could hear the steel in his voice. “He didn’t threaten anyone or try to intimidate anyone. I think he’s just a really strong guy who wants a decent meal.” The girl responded, while washing the dishes in the scalding water without missing a beat. She slid the clean dishes onto a drying rack and turned back towards the old man. He was already pouring food onto a plate, which he handed to the girl. “Well, if you think he’s a good type, then go do what you do best, girl.” “Understood, Master.” Taking the plate, the girl strode back through the curtain. Walking over to the customer who’d ordered the chow mein, the girl set his plate down. Then she turned and walked over to the huge man. Even sitting down the man was as tall as she was. She pulled out a notebook from her waistband, sliding a pen out of it. She grinned at the tall man and spoke firmly. “Hello, sir! Welcome to the Chinese Dragon, home of the finest Chinese food in West Capitol! What can I get you started with today?”

It took a moment for the demon to realize that the menu was closed inside a stand beside him. A large hand reached over, grasping at the hardcover booklet before opening it up. His crimson eyes scanned the lines of text down the page, scouring through entrees, mains, desserts and drinks. Much of the food he did not recognize, and others he found comparable to their Japanese equivalents.
After a moment, a girl came out to his table. She had a wry smile on her face as she held out a notepad and pen, ready to take his order. But Sansho left the poor waitress hanging, almost uncomfortably so, as he continued to read through the menu. After a few long moments, he finally spoke.
"Sweet and sour pork," he finally responded, his voice low and rugged, almost muttering if it weren't for his volume. He continued, "Chicken chow mein. Minced beef dumplings. Peking roasted duck. Beef and vegetable spring rolls." He paused. Silence drifted between the two of them, almost as though he had finished, but he continued before she could even ask. "Chinese coconut buns. And a bottle of huangjiu rice wine."
He closed the menu and returned in to the stand. He briefly stared ahead towards the counter before shifting his dark eyes to the girl. "That will be all."

Chaya waited with her trademark smile, trying not to get exasperated as the silence grew awkward. The huge man simply flipped through the menu, silently scoping out his meal options. He finally spoke, ending the silence with the sheer volume of his gravelly low voice. If he would’ve been threatening the girl, she might’ve passed out from the sheer power his tone carried. She quickly wrote down all of his choices, before adding on the desert and alcohol. She quickly tallied up the tab and paused, before speaking to him.
“Sir, the total of your order is high enough for you to qualify for an extra entree free of charge. Today’s special is the Chinese Pho, which is especially excellent and highly applauded by the locals.” Her tone never shifted, as she maintained her smile. The tone of the room had shifted; despite this demon’s powerful presence, the customers were relaxing and returning to their individual orders. She waited for his response to her sudden comment, holding the small notepad close to her chest.

The girl took his order, fairly quickly as well. The demon did order a lot, and he had hoped that she was able to note everything down. He was a bit taken aback with the fact that he could be given a free entrée with how much he had spent. The demon scarcely cared for the price of the food—he could pay however much it totalled to.
Once again his hand reached out to the menu, flicking to the first page and scanning the entrees. He looked down to the food that she had suggested, the Chinese Pho—a noodle soup with broth, herbs, and a choice of either beef or chicken. He had already ordered noodles with the chow mein, but had decided that a soup would be equally as good.
"This is acceptable," he responded, accepting the girl's offer. He slid the menu back onto the stand. "Bring the drink quickly," he spoke, his voice increasing in volume slightly, his tone almost demanding like master and servant. "I am thirsty."

The girl nodded as the demon accepted the offer. He put the menu as she turned back towards the kitchen. When he spoke firmly, she shivered from the strength of his aura and hurried to the kitchen. “Master, did you catch that order?” The old man held out a tray, with the plate of sweet and sour pork next to the plate of chicken chow mein. He was already frying the dumplings in one wok as the vegetable rolls steamed in another. “Here’s the first course; the wine is in the back.” The maid took the tray, walking towards the back. Scouring the shelf of bottles, the woman secured the desired beverage and yanked it from the rack. Setting it on the tray, she also secured a small glass. Strolling back through the curtain, the woman began laying the plates out in front of the huge man. “Here’s your sweet and sour pork, along with chicken chow mein.” After she had set the plates down, the woman set the glass firmly on the table in front of the man. Grabbing the bottle, the girl undid the seal and filled the small glass in one fluid motion. She set the bottle across from the man, without spilling a single drop, and smiled at him. “Is there anything else you’d like to add to the order, sir? The rest of your food will be ready shortly.”

As the waitress walked away from him and back to the counter, Sansho gazed around once more. Only a couple of the other patrons here took to giving him quick glances, with everyone else minding their own business and enjoying their meals. It was to be expected; it wasn't every day that someone like him turned up.
Tiny footsteps caught the demon's ear. He turned to where it came from, but saw nothing… until he looked down. A small girl with blonde pigtails and a pink skirt with white frills stood by his table, her bright blue eyes looking up at him. No fear, no hesitation. The child was truly naïve.
"Mister," spoke the girl, her voice sweet and innocent, "are you a martial artist?"
The demon paused for a moment, his bright red eyes gazing down at her. He waited for a moment, to see if she would back away, or at the very least turn her gaze. But she did not, steadfast and gazing with curiosity. "I am," he responded softly.
"Cool! I like to watch tournaments! Have you been in a tournament?"
"I only fight when it is necessary." Sansho was quite surprised at this girl. As endearing and pure as she seemed, she seemed to also have a thing for fighting.
"You mean, like, fighting bad guys?" The demon gave a light nod of his head. A small smile spread across her face. "So you're like a superhero!"
Before Sansho could reply, a taller woman, presumably the child's parent, hurried over and took the girl by the hand. "I'm really sorry!" she apologised, her voice shaky. "I hope my daughter hasn't been too much of a hassle!"
Sansho waved a hand in gesture of it being fine. The mother led the girl away from the table, her hushed voice reprimanding her for talking to strangers.
A moment after, the waitress had come out with a couple of the demon's orders, the plates expertly held and balanced in her hands and arms. She even had the courtesy of pouring him the first shot, something that Sansho was new to. He looked across at her as she asked him. "That will be all," he replied.
Whether or not she was still here, the warrior split the chopsticks before picking up a chunk of the sweet and sour pork. The concoction of flavours—tomato, soy, pineapple, rice vinegar—danced against his taste buds as he popped the chunk into his mouth. The meat, so tender and succulent, fell apart in his mouth as he teeth lightly chewed. Gulping it down, his free hand reached for the glass and took a swig of the beverage. It was strong, but fermented nicely, smooth as it went down. The food was acceptable, and he expected every other dish to be so.
