Yo, so me and some others had a recent discussion in the chat about merging techs. Ever since I joined, I have always been hearing that you could either merge techs if one of your partners had a merging variant, OR if you had the same tech as your partner. However, just to be sure about this (just random curiosity) I asked Bing, and he said he wasn't quite sure, and that his verdict would be that people could only merge with a merging variant present. If even an admin isn't quite sure, then perhaps this means that this topic is still up for debate? I would like for at least all of the admins to speak their piece on it, while also letting anyone else speak their opinion on it before there becomes a final agreement (since I suppose there hasn't been one). As for my own opinion, I used to agree with the fact that same tech merge was a cool idea, but now that this topic is stirring yet again, I think that it might just be better to keep it for merging variants since I can see abuse. For instance, someone having all their minions and guards just have all the same techs (I admit I thought of this) and friends just getting the same ones as well, making the merging variant pretty much useless. I can definitely see that being abused, to me merging seems like the solution to solving this but moreso it seems like it's the ability to merge different techs into one. Like Big Bang Kamehameha. It's pretty much intrinsic to merge one kamehameha with another, but then you'll have whole squads of people doing that and completely overwhelming other people. I really would like merging all cleared up and neatly wrapped.

Exact same tech—Name, tier and description—ought to merge. Makes sense that turtle school students can group Kamehameha without having to learn a special variation.
Merge variants would have the bonus of merging with any tech: a UV3 could merge with an N1, UP3, or even another UV3 for some interesting effects.

Yeah, the abuse as outlined by the OP would make variants useless, and I think it ought to be merging variant required.
Two kamehamehas, for instance, can have chi that isn't aligned and won't blend simply because they're put together. There is a perfect example of this in canon, where SSJ2 Gohan and Cell both face off with Super Kamehamehas.
Merging would mean that you trained your chi to be able to match with others, as long as they trained for the same.

For extra clarification, can I pose the following Scenario?
Three people are charging attacks together, and wish to merge them all but don't have identical techniques. SO, how many merging variants do these need to be? One, two, or all three?

It'd be pretty broken if any tech could merge with any tech. Even if the stipulation is that they have to have the same name or description, that can still open up avenues for abuse.
The original design of Merging techniques was that they both needed to be a variant. Pretty simple to fix the vagueness of the description in the Pre-Approved Techniques section, so we'll probably do that soon.

If two merging techniques have to be variants how do you determine which variant is used within the merging technique? It'd be pretty broken to have homing and piercing together or something of a similar nature used against someone.

Yeah, I was asking about whether a technique of another type could count towards merging. If that's not answered yet I'll wait for an answer then.

I believe that the merging variant is basically just a regular offensive attack that simply can merge with another merging variant. Nothing can be added on top of that, unless you were able to make a special that had two variants attached I suppose.
