The space pod settled against the rock with a rickety, metallic clunk that made Cushaw's already pounding heart leap into her throat. At times it seemed like any careless touch might cause the decrepit spacecraft to fall apart, but she had to believe that she was just imagining that. She was about to trust her life to a piece of junk stolen from a scrapyard. She couldn't afford to start pondering the very real possibility that it might fall apart off-planet, abandoning her to the cold and airless void of deep space. After what she'd already gone through in the last twenty-four hours for the sake of her life and freedom, Cushaw refused to consider that the end of her story would be so utterly pathetic.
The Kabochan collapsed, panting, against the sheer wall of the gorge. Her entire body felt like it was congealing into a single hard knot of pain, and considering how big Kabochans were built, that was a whole lot of pain. Her hands were dark and sticky from the blood that still leaked from the blaster wound in her side. Bleary-eyed, she stared at the jagged scar of sky above her head. The light of the stars still hurt to look at, after the unending darkness of the mines. Cushaw strained her ears, trying to make out anything over the roaring rush of her own blood.
All seemed quiet, aside from the distant noises of the city, and it was hard to tell whether the far-off commotion contained anything out of the ordinary. Cushaw tried to consider the facts. She'd made it this far into the wilderness alive, hadn't she? Pursuit couldn't have been all that hot. Then again, who'd raise an uproar over a dead junkman in the slums? They probably saw incidents like that every other night. This was still Saiyan territory, after all. The bastards were always fighting among each other just to keep in practice. The odd corpse down a shithole probably wasn't seen as out of place.
Cushaw hauled herself up again and turned to the pod. Her fingers were shaking from the loss of blood, but she managed to type in the activation sequence again. The pre-recorded voice delivered its error-ridden message once again. Cushaw flicked impatiently through a bunch of screens, each of which stated again that the environmental system and suspended animation facilities were all, to use the technical term, fucked. She was desperate to pick a destination and get off this twice-cursed rock, as fast as possible.
Selecting available destinations based on current energy reserves. Calibrating.
Match 1 of 22. Planet Kabocha.
"Skip," Cushaw growled under her breath. Seeing the name of her home planet flash up on the screen was like a stab in the heart. She couldn't go back there, not ever. Not the way she was now.
Match 2... Match 3... Match 4...
She skipped a whole slew of matches, her despair mounting with each one that passed. They were all within the Empire's territory, and that wasn't an option. Please, I'll take anything, anywhere the Saiyans haven't gotten their dirty paws on yet!
Match 19 of 22. Planet Konats.
"Konats?" From what she knew, the planet was basically an arid hellhole, save for a few settlements. Its inhabitants mostly kept to themselves, though she'd seen a few traveling merchants and mercenaries, lean sword-wielding warriors with fine features and finer words. What kind of refuge was she likely to find there?
Didn't matter. It was her only shot. When she tried to view the remaining three matches, the computer just made a noise that sounded like it was about to go on the fritz. She was already pushing her luck plenty. Cushaw managed to scrawl the required sequence onto the pad before pulling herself into the pod and dropping into the seat. It felt like something was digging a hole in her back, and it stank like the inside of someone's loincloth, but all of that was secondary now.
The door of the pod closed, sealing her inside what was already starting to resemble a cold metal tune. The engines whirred into life and the pod kicked off into the air with a jolt that knocked the remaining breath from Cushaw's lungs. The pain in her side flared up with fresh fury, and she pressed a hand to it, lacking even the strength to grind her teeth against the pain.
Slowly, her vision turned to black, and deep space swallowed her.
