The sun was just barely starting to fall to the West after it had reached the highest point in the sky. Kaiyo walked casually down the sidewalk dressed in her regular oversized grey hoodie. As usual, a fire extinguisher was tucked away in the massive front pocket. She didn’t often choose to wander around during the day. There were way too many people out and about for her liking. Still, it was kind of nice to get out once in a while when most of the stores in West Capitol were actually open. As long as she didn’t make a habit of it, a day or two every now and then wouldn’t be too bad.
The city was completely different in the daylight. During the hours she normally chose for a stroll, most of the people she ran into were absolutely plastered and were trying to stumble their way home. If that wasn’t the case, then they were likely punks or weirdoes that simply didn’t feel like they fit in with normal folks. Kaiyo obviously felt that she fell into the second category, though that was mostly because she didn’t want to accidentally set anyone on fire. She still had a long way to go until she mastered her pyrokinesis. Until then, the fire extinguisher she carried around with her was her best friend.
The younger of the two Habane sisters blinked from under the loose hood of her oversized grey garment as her eyes fell on a small crowd that had gathered outside of a candy shop. Normally the fact that there was any sized crowd at all would have been enough to make her avoid the place like the plague. She was kind of curious as to what all of the excitement was for though. Besides, it was a candy shop; candy was probably involved. Kaiyo had always been kind of a sucker when it came to sweets. It’s not like she became stupid when they were offered, but they did tend to make her a little more agreeable.
Kaiyo slowly walked closer to the crowd of people. Apparently they were gathered around a woman that stood right outside of the shop’s door that was handing out free samples for a new product of theirs. Free samples? That didn’t sound so bad. The teenager squeezed her petite frame into the crowd and inched her way to the front. Eventually she reached the large bucket that everyone had been grabbing the samples from and followed suit, grabbing a piece for herself before wiggling her way back through to freedom.
She took a deep breath once she had cleared the gradually growing crowd of people before taking a look at what she had grabbed. It didn’t really look like anything special. The wrapper was pitch black, hiding any details of the candy inside of it other than its round shape. It didn’t even have the logo of the candy shop anywhere on it. It looked absolutely nothing like what she saw other people walking away with. All of their pieces looked like the exact opposite as to what she got. They had colorful, transparent wrappers showing off a round piece of ruby red candy inside. The store’s logo was displayed prominently on the side. Had Kaiyo gotten a reject or something? She was tempted to brave the crowd again and ask the woman about it, but she decided against it.
The redhead shrugged her shoulders and made her way down the sidewalk at a brisk pace. Her eyes were still focused on the odd piece of candy that sat in the palm of her hand. Something felt odd about it, but she simply couldn’t place her finger on what it was. Was it even safe to eat? Kaiyo sighed as she made a sharp turn into an alley, feeling like she needed a break from the people wandering the sidewalk. Why the hell was she overthinking this? It was just candy. So what if the wrapper looked a little weird?
Kaiyo unwrapped the strange little treat as she continued to walk. Underneath its dark packaging it looked like nothing more than an orange piece of hard candy. That seemed harmless enough. She didn’t even know why she was fretting over it in the first place. Closing her eyes, she popped it into her mouth. This caused her to completely miss the strange glow it had taken on right before it entered.
