“Are we there yet?”
“Nicolette Rose D’Arvoire, if you ask me that one more time I will turn this hovercar around and we won’t see Uncle Nic for another handful of years.” Victoria found herself narrowing her eyes off to the rearview mirror, the lenses of her glasses reflecting light and making her seem that much more serious — as if her stern ‘mom’ voice wasn’t doing that already. Both of the threats, of course, were baseless.
There was a snorting storm of giggling. Rosie loved it when her mum got all flustered over her jokes. “A--”
“And no — we aren’t there yet. Also, no sweets for the weekend.”
And that was when the little one suddenly went rigid, piping up and deciding to not risk any deserts for the sake of a few more laughs.
Victoria found herself sighing. She loved her daughter, but sometimes she was just a bit too much. Especially when she was trying to pull some cartoonish joke while Victoria struggled to find her way through West City. This entire metropolis was downright confusing, making the prospect of giving someone a surprise visit all the more difficult when you couldn’t find their home in the first place!
A sigh escaped the witch mother, her eyes glancing down at the glowing phone screen that sat nestled in her lap. She pulled over, a long nail tapping away on the phone screen as she considered giving Nicolas a call. Doing so would surely spoil a superficial aspect of the event. Just as she was about to give up and give him a ring, a thought popped up into her head; relief tugged at the woman’s lips, which formed into a tender smile.
Victoria turned her head just a little over her shoulder, “Rosie, sweetie, want to play a game?” She offered.
“Okay, mummy.” Rosie’s voice was unsure; she wasn’t sure what kind of game there was to play in a car — unless it was the ‘quiet game’, but that she had already figured out was just a trick her mum employed to keep the calm.
Rosie was surprised when Victoria announced the game was ‘hide and seek’. Rosie prompted to cover her eyes, did so after removing her large glasses. Her tiny hands came up; as the girl began to count to ten, that’s when Victoria got to work. Swiftly, the woman placed her hands together over her lap, summoning her worn, cream-colored grimoire on her lap. The book, opened to the middle page, began to swirl with purple letterings, which scrolled through the pages. Victoria pressed her index finger against it and focused. She was using her magical abilities to find out just where her dear old friend lived!
She was mildly surprised when a long URL scrolled at the header of the book. Victoria was slightly embarrassed to find that her Gloomy Grimoire simply opened Nicolas’ ‘About Me’ page on SpaceBook — which contained not only his address but a wealth more of information.
Victoria found herself relieved, though she made a mental note to nag him about the dangers of leaving his public information out there in the open. Just as the book was closed, a tiny hand reached over and grazed against Victoria’s side.
“You’re it!”
She almost jumped, beginning to wonder just when the little one had stopped counting.
“Why do you have your diary in your lap, mummy? I thought you were supposed to be playing! You forgot to hide!”
Victoria, a little flustered, promptly slid the book off into the passanger’s seat, and out of her daughter’s sight — she wasn’t just ready to explain their magical background to the little munchkin just yet.
“I didn’t forget, dearier!” Victoria called, hands reaching up and taking a hold of the steering wheel. Soon she merged back into traffic, “You’re just too good at this game!”
The lack of further questions indicated Rosie had bought the excuse… Victoria also seemed to be rewarded with a breath of respite, as little Rosie soon found herself napping in her booster seat.
Even with Nicolas’ address in mind Miss D’Arvoire had a hard time getting to him. But, thankfully, she soon managed to find not only the address but a rather convenient parking spot right up front. A sigh of relief escaped the magical amazon, who promptly undid her seatbelt and exited the vehicle. She moved along to the backside of the car and tugged the door open.
A gentle kiss was placed on the temple of the sleeping munchkin, who grunted and opened her eyes. Victoria moved over, taking the glasses Rosie had earlier removed and placing it on the girl’s lap. Rosie, still a little drowsy, slipped them on before undoing her seatbelt.
“Careful with the street, dear,” Victoria warned — leaving the little one to circle around the car and meet her back at the trunk.
"Yes, mummy."
Of course, the street was mostly empty. Should this be currently a rather busy section Victoria would never have left her little one out of the car by herself.
Once at the trunk, Victoria reached down and scooped up an aluminum tray — a lasagna she had baked before taking the little trip over, as well as some sugar cookies which were inside of a large plastic pot. Rosie hugged the plastic pot once it was handed to her — happy to be of help.
With the trunk closed, the two ladies soon found themselves heading over to Nicolas’ apartment. Victoria pressed down on his buzzer and waited. Looking over to watch as a flurry of snow began to descend down. An early noon snow shower? She didn’t remember seeing that in the weather reports… But it was nothing to lose sleep over.
