Continuation from here: [ X ]Rafar Rafar was always a doll — or, at least that’s what Noxa had gathered from their exchanges. She never really took to heart any of the grumpiness that he came with Saiyan blood. None the less, Rafar’s arrival was something that Noxa was mildly entertained by; the fact she met he and Retsu for the first time in a long training session to prepare her for a tournament — and how the Saiyan had shown up to possibly be recruited for Retsu’s empire… Noxa would call it irony, but she didn’t know what irony was. Instead, she simply settled with finding it ‘funny’.
Noxa’s canine companion, too, had taken a keen liking to Rafar. Although they had only met once before, the Saiyan seemed to be one of the few people that kept Floofs at arm’s length — not annoying him with excessive cuddling. Today the cloaked Rafar earned even more points — bringing a large slab of meat and tossing it Floof’s way. Meat. Raw. All of him! This was the kind of delicious treat that Noxa only gave him once a week! This was definitely a big bonus. The pup snatched it from mid air, shaking the stake about before placing it on the ground, looking mover it, and chewing through the flesh to his heart’s content.
“I’ve been alright,” Noxa admitted, remaining seated, but reaching up to lower her shades just far enough so that she could see Rafar without the glass’ tint getting in the way. A cheeky smile splayed across her lips. ‘So it was the advertising that got his attention! Good! I’m glad that all of those hundreds of Zeni wasted on it didn’t go to waste; if they did I’d sure as hell be looking to get my money back.’
Noxa’s arms reached up to clasp behind her head, fingers weaving around the rigid clumps of hair that pressed into the ground to keep her from falling over from the tree stump she leaned out of. “I’d ask how you’re doing, but considering you’re here I’m sure you’re doing amazing!”
With that little bit of pandering quip out of the way, Noxa moved on to answering his question while her Collar Bot — a heart-shaped drone of gray and yellow color — moved out from its place as the emblem in Mr. Floofs’s collar. The hand-shaped bot soon came to float by Noxa’s side.
“You’ve got mail!” Chimed in the feminine AI voice that Rafar would remember from their previous encounter. Noxa, however, turned her face just a little to the hand-sized droid hovering by her right side and snapped her fingers. A holographic panel about the size of a computer monitor was projected from below the droid; Noxa quickly tapped away and muted the bot, which remained suspended there.
The scarlet-haired Bio Android returned her gaze to Rafar, her delicate features narrowing into a sharp glare with a cheeky smile. “Oh — right… Uhh, Lord Retsu hired me to help him take over the Arcosian Empire’s throne; apparently, the last Emperor wasn’t very hands-on and Retsu felt he could do better. He gave me a good deal and I agreed. Soo I killed him by shouting him and half the palace into dust.” There was a brief pause, “It was fun — even if Arcose is way too freakin’ cold…”
Noxa cleared her throat, shaking her head as she didn’t want to get side tracked, “So you’re here to sign up, huh? I hope you know what this entails. Military unit and all that — as long as you’re not afraid of a fight I’m sure you wouldn’t have any trouble getting in. After all, Lord R--” The woman blinked, remembering the title change, “Emperor Retsu,” she corrected herself, “would love to have you. You two always seemed to be really close, after all.”
Still, Noxa’s question was mostly rhetorical; she was sure that the Saiyan didn’t come out here just to say hello; he wasn’t the kind of man that Noxa usually attracted for that — no. Noxa felt it in her gut that Rafar had come to sign up. So, one final question was posed before the Saiyan so much as had a chance to respond to anything else she had said:
“Do you know how to play Tic Tac Toe?”

Rafar half-smiled, watching NOXA’s hound devour the steak like a wood-chipper. He had always liked dogs, though he wasn’t too fervent about it, like some people. Chuckling, he would levitate himself, seating himself down on thin air. “Eh, I’ve been doing alright.” He tapped his chest with a thumb, “Taming the beast within takes a lot of time you know.” Rafar was in a much better mood then the last time the pair had met, having come to this place of his own free will, rather than the desire to stop the bio-android from hurting someone accidentally. His eyes flicked to the movement at the dog’s collar, noticing the drone NOXA had bought. He waved an irritated finger at the little thing, remembering how it had fired a laser at Retsu. He shifted in his seat, unbuckling his scabbard and withdrawing his blade. Producing a cloth, he began polishing the already shining steel.
Grinning as the wandering thought of NOXA finally returned to their conversation, he listened in shock as NOXA described how she had single-handedly killed the Arocsian emperor. It was said that he had once fought against the Sayian prince, sure the kid was a little bratty but his power was not to be trifled with. Shaking his head in wonder, Rafar looked up from his task, meeting NOXA’s yellow eyes, “Impressive NOXA, you’ve certainty grown a lot since our last match. Retsu will be a good leader I think, he has a good strategic mind.” A tingle of jealousy and confusion colored his usually toneless voice, Retsu could have asked HIM to come along also, even if it was just to hold off the guards. Instead, he had taken brawn over brains, but it just was another incentive to train harder than ever! He held his sword up to the wintry light, watching as the light reflected off the blade. A few of the passerby stared, and began to walk just a tad faster.
Coming back to the situation at hand, Rafar nodded in response to NOXA’s query, though he didn’t even had a chance to say anything before another question was asked, “Tic Tac Toe? That’s the one Earthlings play when they want to waste time right? I think I know the basics, seems pretty simple.” He coughed, “Yes I do want to join this “NOXA force”, at least for now. There is already going to be enough uproar on Arcose about a Sayia-jin joining the military, without the knowledge that I’m working independently. Don’t want to cause too many problems for our mutual friend.” He chuckled at the irony, most of the Frost Demons would be placated by the fact that he would have NOXA, “watching over him”, although he knew he was much more steady than the Bio-Android. “The x150 times gravity chamber doesn’t hurt the offer, though the posing might be something we have to discuss.” Giving the weapon a final swipe with the white cloth, he slid the blade back into it’s holder, slinging the entire thing over his shoulder. “Sign me up”

“Good.” Noxa said, giving a quick nod and finding herself baring her teeth in a rather cheesy smile, “I’m glad you’re eager to come here for this.” She admitted, “Lord -” The red head cut herself short, quickly fixing that mistake, “Emperor Retsu asked me to come here personally and see that you were recruited.”
The woman’s legs moved from over the stand and soon found beneath it; she sat up right, her hair pulling away from the ground as they no longer needed to support her seating position.
“Believe it or not, he said I should bring you back to Arcose to be a part of the force even if I had to make you — and these are his words, mind you — ‘black and blue’.” Noxa waved her hand dismissively, her elbows pressing into the wooden stand. “I wouldn’t — don’t worry; having someone by your side who doesn’t want to be there just seems like trouble for me.”
Noxa found the talons of her right hand’s gauntlet tapping twice at the wood, while her naked left hand’s fingertips slid a stack of flyers off to the side. Her hair remained pressed atop the flyers, making sure they remained on the table instead of being whisked away in a gust. Knowing the drill by this point, the Collar Bot found itself projecting a large grid on the table.
“Don’t worry,” Noxa assured, “Considering what the Emperor said you’re already in; besides, I’ve tested you in combat myself a few times. You seem like the good kind of person to have by yourself — smart n’ brave, qualities that are rare together.” The woman found herself tapping away at the bottom right corner of the grid, leaving an ‘X’ glowing in blue against the white projected hologrid.
“We could skip all of this.” Noxa offered, “And I could immediately accept you in, and once the rest of the team is assembled begin training.” Noxa’s grin remained, though her eyes narrowed; the woman leaned in, whispering, “I’ve got some really neat techniques to teach — learned ‘em while on Arcose.” She pulled back, “Or we could go through the tryouts like you were just another applicant. Of course, it wouldn’t matter if you ‘failed’ — not that I think you will be — since you’d be in anyway. But the choice is yours. If you decide to leave now just give me a few methods of contacting you through the inter, extra, or just scouter frequency. If you decide to go through the try outs I’ll still need those, but you could just give me them at the end of it all.”
Noxa pulled herself back, dusting, reaching into the ‘V’ like opening of her robes, scratching at the ribs off the side of her naval, “What do you say?”
Mr. Floofs only now finished the stake, and moved himself off to the side of the table, panting as she watched whatever was about to go down — he heard a good deal of the chatter. He wasn't a big fan of this 'game' that Noxa had been putting applicants through; he thought it was dumb and not a good measure of a warrior... But she was the boss, either way, it was at least entertaining to watch the Virago's reactions every time she lost... Something that she seemed to do a lot when it came to this game.
Giving that last bit a little more thought the demonic canine began to wonder if winning was even the point of this exercise. Considering how often people had been rejected, and how often Noxa had lost... Maybe there was another purpose to this game of 'tic tac toe'. The pup turned to look at Noxa, wondering what that hidden purpose could be. His gaze fell on her just as the woman began to pick her teeth with a long nail. Mr. Floofs rolled his eyes, feeling silly at even entertaining the idea that Noxa was capable of having a complex, hidden motive behind these silly little trials of hers.Tic Tac Toe table! “He asked you personally?” Rafar was flattered, he didn’t think himself to be that important in the newly crowned emperor’s mind. “That was a rhetorical questions by the way.” He sat up from his aerial viewpoint as NOXA began to draw on her table. She also said that he was pre-accepted, no questions asked. This was also very nice, although he wasn’t exactly sure what he had done to deserve all the extra treatment. Maybe it was just because he was trustworthy, a coup tended to stir up a lot of intrigue after all! Rafar touched down on the springy turf, peering over the neon board. NOXA seemed to be serious, tic tac toe wasn’t exactly high on his list for good tests of a person’s ability. The game was, at best, decided in the first few moves, and it was extremely easy to force the other person into a draw. Maybe a game with more strategy would have been a better test.....like space chess. NOXA then gave him the option of skipping this pointless test, or going through the process like any other applicant. She even stated she had learned some new techniques which h! Rafar’s interest was piqued, the Arocsians were natural warriors, so they must have stored up some amazing techniques over the centuries, “I think I’ll go through with the test, looks fun.” Ignoring NOXA’s actions for the moment, he reached over and drew an O on the glowing board, seeking to cut off the Bio-Android early, before she could get some momentum up. Rafar knew that it was probably impossible for him to pull out a win at this point, the corner spaces were just too powerful, but he at least wanted to force NOXA into a draw.

“Yeah, it can be fun — this tic tac toe thing... But...” the woman agreed, though her voice lulled into something a bit lower and droll than her usually high energy self, “I wonder just how many of the applicants are going to get the purpose of these tests though.” Her words came just as a tap was made into the grid, setting another prominent ‘X’ to be placed in the exact opposite of where she originally placed her own. It was a rather faulty move, but Noxa didn’t necessarily seem to be paying much mind.
Then again, even when she seemed to focus into this simplistic game the outcome never seemed to be in her favor. Or, so that’s what Mr. Floofs had been tracking.
“What I’m trying to do here is essentially help show the different kinds of aspects that I’m trying to build the ‘NOXA Force’ on,” Noxa began, “I want it to be both a relaxing, light hearted experience where you are able to keep up morale at its highest, without losing the serious drive and combat effectiveness I hope to instill in my team mates.”
A bit of a sigh came from Noxa, “It’s hard to explain — I have this weird little ‘vision’ about what I want it to be like, and I feel like if I pick a group of people with the right spirit then I’ll be able to realize the vision more effectively, because then it won’t just be me building up towards it, but an entire team.”
There was a brief pause and Noxa would look up to Rafar, narrowing her eyes, “Does that make sense? I hope it does — I’ve only really done one of these ‘group’ things once before, and the last time I did it kind of fell apart pretty spectacularly.”
The woman could only shrug, “Then again, I’m a better being now than I was then; I’m sure I’ll be able to lead the affable, combat-effective squad I’m trying to build into greatness, but I’m guessing only time will really tell.”

Rafar knitted his fingers together, resting his elbows on the makeshift table, his gaze narrowed. Either NOXA was being extremely smart, or extremely dumb. She had drawn another X in the opposite corner from her first move, which would imply that she was trying to set up a checkmate move, or she was simply inexperienced at this game. Deciding to play it safe, he drew a circle on the square to the right of his original move, seeking to shut down a possible checkmate. "A lighthearted atmosphere is always a good thing, though the thick of battle isn't the best time to be cracking jokes. You usually want allies that are dead serious at that point in time." Rafar leaned back reflectively from his kneeling position, "Visions of something you want are hard to implement, though they are very rewarding when you do so. This NOXA force seems like a good idea, though it will take a while for the members to be strong enough to contend with real threats to the AE, not just some pirates and insurgents." Rafar was silent for a minute seemingly contemplating something of great import, "I don't play well with others either NOXA, the last group I was in was my dad's death squad, and that didn't end to well for me." He gave NOXA a sideways glance, "I will help you run the squad as best I can, but it will fall apart if you, as the leader, don't stay focused enough to direct the squad to victory!" Rafar's main issue with the amazon was that she never really got focused, always messing around and making stupid moves. If she ever focused on a goal, he shuddered to think of the fate of anyone who got in her way.

*Assuming you went left; I'm sure it doesn't matter either way in terms of outcome. “You’re not wrong.” Noxa admitted, “I know it’s important to stay focused and serious in a fight, but outside of it I also think it’s important to do the opposite. Relaxing and having fun with your squad mates helps build trust — people say that there is a time and place for everything. I don’t think it’s that clear cut; I think that the time and place for something is whenever you decide to make it.”
That comment would likely be a good way for Rafar to understand that whatever this force was it seemed that Noxa was deadset on making sure that everyone was comfortable with each other.
Almost without looking Noxa swiftly moved and tapped away at the rightmost top corner of the grid. She clearly fell into the grip of defeat just as she set up for victory. Should she have ‘clicked’ one grid lower than surely she’d have, at the very least, stopped Rafar’s victory.
While her focus on the game was questionable, the woman’s golden gaze refused to leave the Saiyan’s visage; she watched his body language carefully. After all, one of the purposes of the test was to make sure one could relax and ‘go with the flow’. Unbeknownst to the amazon, her unwavering fixation on the Saiyan could very well throw him off from that purpose. Then again, if it did, he would be losing focus on the game, which was the clear primary focus outlined. A true catch 22.
Either way, none of this mattered — Rafar was already in. The Emperor’s own word was good enough for Noxa to simply give him a pass; besides, she had already fought the man — what more experience would she need to have about his character and combat capabilities?

Sorry about that "I suppose you're right about that. Trusting your squad-mates is always important, but slacking off with them isn't a very good plan either. I guess for your new force, a happy medium would probably be best." Rafar intertwined his fingers, thinking hard. NOXA could still potentially pull this off, or at least make it a tied match. The amazon had said that he didn't have to win this test, but Rafar still disliked losing to the brainless warrior. It was a matter of pride, professional, natural and personal. He blinked then, surprised as the massively powerful bio-android basically just handed him the match by not blocking his advance, "You do realize how this game works, right? You could have just blocked me there." To finalize his victory, he tapped the middle-right square, winning the game. Smiling inwardly, he turned to NOXA, only now noticing her intense gaze. "Does that count as the first test, because I believe I passed it." To be honest, any random human could have easily passed that poor excuse for an entrance exam. Did NOXA have other tests in store to weed out the weak and useless?
