Hey yall I noticed a couple of techs recently that had the following language for Zanzoken and After Image. Through a sudden burst of speed you leave behind a static image of yourself to distract your opponent, this technique allows you to completely dodge techniques beneath 100% of your PL and reduces the power of techniques above 100% of your pl by that much. This technique uses 1 KP in KP Battles and cannot be charged. (my emphasis in bold) I'm not sure if this is a new type of request or has been going on for a while now, but that's not how Zanzoken works. If you don't get the dodge and get hit by it, it doesn't take off any PL from the attack at all. Zanzoken is already pretty powerful in that the SU2 dodges 200% and the SU3 dodges 300%. It's not meant to work as a shield + dodge. Just a heads up on that if there are more like that tech out there.

No problem! You said you might allow a variant version to work in a manner that it allows you to also soak damage, but I think it might actually be better to not allow that because it encroaches on the function of shields. (Before you clarified this I had no intention of bothering to get shield techs at all)
For instance a variant after image that allowed you to dodge or soak 100% would cost 2 kp. A MP3 shield that soaks the same amount would cost 3kp and not have the added effect of a complete dodge under 100% .
Granted a shield is chargable and protect allies as well, but I don't think it makes up for it in earnest.
By not allowing it after image is the go to for avoidance, and shields can work for that "oh shit I can't dodge this" kind of situation. If allowed I feel the distinction is not there, and in the majority of cases soaking 200% instantly is going to outdo charging a shield for two turns (if you are lucky enough to see a big attack coming).

Well you wouldn't have to dodge if it was under 100%.
