Sometimes, if you want to do better, you have to figure out the setting and what's occurring to your character. It's a painful process, and even if it may seem 'terrible' to you, you'll more than likely find some better interactions, which'll ramp up the direction and depth of your characters! Read the sentences out loud and see how you're expressing them. See if you could also express more detail in your writing, as detail helps your partner bounce off yourself and carry threads for a more lengthy period of time.
