The grey majin sauntered down the street, enjoying the brisk coolness of the morning air. This was going to be a good week for Sundavr. 3 of the monthly tournaments she regularly joined were coming up, and she was on her way to the registration for the first.
She nodded to the man standing outside the door as she walked into a nondescript, rather small building, entering a hallway that was surprisingly long considering the building’s apparent size. Benches lined the corridor, and fighters, both experienced warriors and ambitious amateurs, filled them. All of the older fighters nodded to her. She’d been a staple of the tournament for the past six months, and even if they weren’t exactly her friends, they shared a sort of camaraderie. As she approached the door at the end of the hall, one of them, a tall human whose dark brown hair showed hints of grey, laid a hand on her shoulders. “Hey. Good luck out there” he said, flashing her a grin, and she grinned back. “You too, Quile. Against me, you’re gonna need it!” she replied, laughing, as she opened the door and stepped through.
The room she entered was plain, with blank white walls and a mahogany desk cutting off a third of the room. The woman behind looked up and smiled. “Hey, Sundavr!” she greeted the majin cheerfully, setting down the sheaf of papers she had been reading. “It’s good to see you! We were starting to run out of room, and I was worried you wouldn’t be able to register in time!” Sundavr tilted her head. “Starting to run out of room?! But…. you’ve never been able to fill more than half the openings!” she said, stunned, and the woman shrugged. “I know, but there’ve been a lot of newcomers lately. Weird ones…. Just this morning someone whose left arm was entirely mechanical signed up!” The woman sighed, shaking her head. “You’ve been our champion for a while, but some of these people…. They scare me, Sundavr…”
The majin’s eyes narrowed as she took one of the registration forms and signed it. “Don’t worry. I’ll beat ‘em.” she said, growling softly, and the woman nodded. “Make sure you do” she said, an edge entering her voice that the fighter had never heard there before. “They need to be knocked down a peg or 5!” Sundavr blinked, then grunted her understanding and turned to leave.
The Next Day
Sundavr sat in the waiting room of the arena the tournament’s organizers had always reserved for their event ahead of time. She had already gone up against 12 opponents. The first 7 were people who, like her, were regulars of the tourney, and she had crushed them, as she always did. They had been good sports about it, though, as they all knew that none of them could beat her. The rest, though, had been newcomers, and had caused her a little trouble. They weren’t strong enough to beat her, and they certainly didn’t have the skill required, but they were leagues above her normal opponents. Now the final match had come, and her opponent wasn’t Quile, as it usually was, but one of the newcomers - the one with the mechanical arm The woman who ran registration had mentioned the day before. Turned out, his arm wasn’t the only mechanical part of him; he had revealed in one of his battles, via an arrogant monologue, that he was an android! He had wiped the floor with Quile in the semi-finals, and Sundavr felt a tingle of excitement for the coming match. It was accompanied, however, by a nervous fluttering in her stomach. The power and speed this one had exhibited not only matched her own abilities, but exceeded them, even if it wasn’t by a very large margin, and she wasn’t sure she could beat him. Her thoughts were interrupted by the announcer the tourney had hired. “LADIES AND GENTLEMAN!” He bellowed. “It’s been an exciting tournament, but now it’s time for the final match! This time it's gonna be between Sundavr, the reigning champion for six months straight, and #47, the mechanical newcomer who has crushed all in his way up to this point!”
Sundavr sighed and stood up, walking over to the door and pushing it open. No more time to think…. Gotta put on a show she thought as she strutted towards the square field of polished stone where the fights took place. She stepped onto the edge of the stone, and looked around at the small crowd that had gathered to watch, grinning as she did so.
Her challenger made a similar entrance, but paid no attention to the crowd, instead glaring at her, unblinking. “So you are the strongest warrior here” he sneered. “I shall destroy you, and when I do, I will have proved my supremacy!” he proclaimed, his voice echoing through the arena, but Sundavr spat and stalked towards him. “Let’s teach you some humility, shall we?” she snarled, dropping into a crouch, her hands held in front of her to block any incoming attacks.
The android laughed, then sprang towards her, attempting to knock her to the ground and hold her there. She dropped to the ground, causing him to fly over her, then leapt to her feet and rushed forward, launching a barrage of punches and kicks before he even recovered from his failed tackle. He stumbled backwards under her assault, her attacks denting his chassis, then growled and retaliated, his fist slamming into the side of her face, sending her spinning to the side. Now on the defensive, she was unable to launch any more attacks of her own, as she had all she could handle avoiding another serious hit. She snarled, leaping backwards. “Bleikr...” she muttered, a shining magenta bow forming from her ki. The android, took a step back, then shook his head and charged, just as she loosed her arrow, focusing all her power, both her Ki and the mystical powers shared by all majin, into it. “Oro!” she cried as the projectile slammed into her opponent, sending him flying. He landed heavily on the stone of the arena, cracking it, then staggered to his feet. His torso had been torn open, and the motor that served as his heart was clearly visible. “You are defeated.” Sundavr stated confidently, but the android threw themselves at her, screaming wildly, she stepped to the side and slammed them back to the ground, wincing as she head the sound of metal breaking, and the android went still. She quickly turned them over, and grimaced as she saw that the motor had split in two. A man in the crowd rushed forward. “No, no, no!” they exclaimed, kneeling beside the android. “My creation!”
Sundavr looked at them as they muttered to the now inanimate metal husk. “Don’t worry, my son…. I will fix you…” suddenly, their head whipped around, and they glared at the majin. “We’ll return!” the man hissed. “He will be stronger, and he will crush you!” He pulled out a remote and pressed a button, causing a pair of spherical drones with long arm-like appendages to approach and lift #47. The man fled, the drones following him.
“W-Well then….” the announcer stuttered, then cleared his throat. “LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, SUNDAVR HAS CLAIMED VICTORY!” The crowd, previously staring in silent amazement, suddenly burst into cheers as Sundavr exited the arena. The woman who had been in charge of registration approached her. “Good job out there” she congratulated the champion, handing her a pouch of Zenni. "the reward for winning, plus a little bonus from me for teaching that android a lesson. 500 Zenni, all told." She explained as Sundavr took it and grinned, but the majin was worried. This influx of fighters was bad news for her. The tournaments were her livelihood, and if this kept up, she might not be able to maintain a steady enough income to survive. I need to get stronger…. Much stronger. She thought, then shook her head. She could worry about that tomorrow.
