Three nights after her escape. She found herself wandering , what she’s found herself doing a lot. What else could she do? As far as she knew there were no family or friends for her seek seek refuge while she figured thing out. If there were, would they readily accept a freak of flesh and machine like her? Or was she always like this? Is her lack of memory the result of some software patch that the company seemed so fond of installing? While having the aggressive inner monologue she found herself staring through the window of a cafe, IT didn’t really attract much attention, even though it was the only business open at this hour. She reached into the pockets of her hooded jacket. That 2000 zenni she found on the street was still there, money was hard to come by at the moment. Should she waste her money on coffee and a baked good? She was still human, and she didn’t know how long she could go without food. Maybe a social opportunity could distract her from the questions,
“Are you going to cover me in here too? I was designed to accentuate your natural form.. It’s highly insulting.”
Garnetto rolled her eyes and entered the establishment. There was something oddly familiar. The poor lighting, the bold smell of ground coffee beans. She brushed it off, She took a seat at the booth and ordered a cup of coffee with a croissant. She didn’t even look at the menu, she just seemed to know that the place had it. She was served by a bright pink haired woman. By her name tag, her name was Ayumi. She was one of those sickeningly chipper types that seemed to be unnaturally perky at all times.
“Here you go, Sugar! Why are you out so late?”
Her voice was uncomfortably high.Garnetto tried to cope with the ear grating voice while she raised the coffee cup to her lips. Itt didn’t have much flavor. Plain black coffee had no flavor. This stuff supposed to be bitter, right? She shrugged it off and took a bite of the croissant. It was flakey and buttery, but to a barely noticeable level. She would have to strain all of her focus on eating to actually taste it. Maybe it was just nerves affecting her tastebuds.
“Just can’t sleep. It’s been a long day.”
Another bite, another sip. This whole action seemed rather futile. But this Ayumi person seemed like the type who’d be absolutely devastated if a customer seemed dissatisfied with the service. Garnetto actually found herself able to relax a little bit around the woman. Despite the high voice and the chipper attitude, she was really easy to talk to. Though she couldn’t remember anything to hold a conversation. It seemed Ayumi was always helpfully filling in those awkward pauses. IT was actually slightly disheartening when another customer pulled the pinked haired woman away.
“I know you are enjoying yourself. But could you avoid buttery treats full of carbs an sodium? I was not made to accommodate your body if it began to bloat. “
That was a voice she didn’t miss. Garnetto decided she didn’t need to hide her face in this place. She wasn’t next to a window or anything. That, however might have been a mistake around Ayumi. It was a few minutes of biting and sipping. Until Ayumi spoke in a much higher voice, she was excited.
“Garnetto! Garnetto!”
She at first ignored the call. Well, she didn’t know who she was calling. No new customer came in, and the old fellow sipping at coffee alone certainly didn’t look like he’d have such a name. The cyborg pondered if the girl was going crazy or if she was shouting some type of kitchen jargon she was unfamiliar with. That was until Ayumi stood directly in front of of her table, foregoing any notion of personal space.
“Oh my gosh! You’re finally out of the hospital! I was so worried when I heard it was you in that accident. You look great for someone who had a building fall on them!”
Was she this Garnetto? A building fell on her? A jolt, coming from her bodysuit caused her to jump to her feet. It was at that time Ayumi noticed the sword at the cyborg’s hip. Garnetto reached into her pocket and slapped the bill down on the table. She didn’t like this feeling that came over her. She needed space.
“I'm sorry. You must be mistaking me for someone else.”
Before Ayumi could even ask Garnetto if she wanted change, she was already out the door. A myriad of images flooded her mind. All of them passed to quick to decipher. Was she having a headache? Do cyborgs even have those? Whatever it was, her bodysuit was not reacting to it in a friendly matter. And something in her head, it felt like a part of her brain was boiling. She barely made it to a dark alley before she collapsed against a wall. Her eyes faded out. Garnetto stirred back to consciousness a few seconds later.
“ Take it slowly. One of your internal memory modules overheated when your organic memory center overloaded it.. The loud one must have known you. To be fair, Garnetto is a lot better sounding than Cyborg 799.”
“Shut up.” Garnetto cut her companion off as she perked her ears up.
“Well, I never! I must relay important information”
“Shut. Up” Garnetto leapt to her feet.. A discarded bottle from the alley came into her hand before she launched it toward the roof of one of the nearby buildings. A loud groan and thud was heard in the distance. But the sound that interested her more was a click followed by the sound of an air rifle. A metal net flew toward her.
The shooter couldn’t help but smirk, there was no way she could avoid the net. The company had been searching all over North Capitol for the escaped Cyborg. This would certainly land him a promotion. At least an extra week of vacation. His smile faded when the net seemed to pass right through the target. A second look and the target vanished from thin air. Before he could even calculate the situation, a hand came across the side of his neck. He fell in a heap, Garnetto looked down to find the company logo on the attacker’s body armor. Three days was apparently too soon to hope for them giving up on the search.
“When you are running away from someone, it might be a good idea to not remain in the city where their headquarters is based”
Garnetto was going to pipe back with a comment, then realized Kurochi was right. Kuruchi was the name the suit decided to give itself. She sighed looking down at the company man. Once they realise this person won't be reporting back in time they will probably send backup. They might be tracking his location right now.
“Then what do you suggest?”
The suit remained silent for several seconds.
“It is unwise to flee from those that know how to repair you, and also know how to perform your basic upkeep. As a program that oversaw most of the procedures, I can say with confidence that your human body cannot survive if the enhancements are removed. “
Garnetto gripped the hilt of the nano edge. A rather irrational thought of turning the blade against the body suit. She could never seem to take it off, maybe she could cut it off of her.
“You’re on their side!?....wait I’m human? Anyway. I’ll take that risk. I’m not going back in that room. They aren’t shutting me down again”
Kurochi once more remained silent for an expanded amount of time.
“ No. My top objective is to monitor and make sure you remain operational. Your rebellion may lead to the company dismantling you even if you return willingly. That goes against my objective Once you feel a safe distance you should find a terminal and try to gather information on someone who can do the work independently.. You would have to collect some money though. “
Garnetto sheathed the sword. Looking up to the distance, she stuffed her hands into her pockets, slowly rising off the ground. She will have to create some distance from the fallen company muscle. While North capitol most likely had the most clues as to who she was. Avoiding capture from the company was her top priority at the moment. She darted through the sky, her direction unknown, destination as well. Just away.
