"This is what you must do."
The words still echoed within Alexander's mind as he stood on the outskirts of Satan City. The young man had been visited in his dreams by She Who Watches, the enigmatic creature that lurked beyond the veil, beyond life and death, in something else entirely. She was among those of That Which Should Not Be, and was the source of Alexander's power, from what the young man understood. Even the information that he'd gathered thus far about the Void had been mostly inconclusive- he had many ideas about it and the bits and pieces he'd received hadn't really given him any indication of whether or not his beliefs were true. The most he'd received from Vergil, but even that had mostly just been confirming what he'd already thought. The Void had existed long before Hell and the Ogres, before Heaven and the Kais, before life existed in the universe. It was something that had simply always been, and that thought possibly scared him more than anything else.
Older than time itself- nothing had made that claim before that he was aware of, and it seized a terror in his heart that he couldn't believe. His emerald eyes were closed, the boy leaning up against a tree with his arms crossed over his chest, trying to determine if the words that she had spoken were the truth of the matter. He had recently defeated her Knight, and taken his place. It had given him such a surge of power, something that he couldn't believe. And now it was asking for something in return. It wanted him to assist in returning the world to the Void. The boy gave a small sound as he moved to push himself away from the tree that he'd leaned upon, noting with a small amount of satisfaction (despite himself) that the place where his right hand had rested had turned the bark from the deep, rich brown to a soft grey, which was slowly spreading throughout the rest of the tree.
In moments, the grey had begun to spread throughout the rest of the trunk, pieces of the bark falling off in pieces as time continued, the corruption spreading up to the branches and leaves, the entire tree slowly imploding upon itself as it turned to the strange grey ash. Alexander watched with both that odd sense of satisfaction, yet also trepidation as he realized that this is what the power within him wished him to do. Not to just the trees...but to everything. Return everything to the Void. Could he...go through with that?
Could he really?
