Toes wrapped around a wire, a lot thicker than what the crowd perceived it as. A blindfolded girl stood, one foot on a wooden platform, raised into the air, the other tentatively reached out to the wire. It spanned, a great distance, to another wooden platform, taut, with little to no give. The crowd roared with excitement, all eyes focused on her, the star, spotlights steady on her, the band silent. This is what she was here for, this is what she did.
Everybody took in a breath as her other foot left the wooden platform. She was only balancing on the wire now, nothing to support her. Another step, another, and still another, and she began leaning to the right, arms outstretched. The crowd gasped, a woman screamed, but for nothing, because as easily as she'd lost her balance, she was back up, standing straight and tall.
It was a simple enough trick. From far enough away, it looked like she would have almost fallen, looked like she was having difficulty balancing. But really, Tenshi had the crowd in the palm of her hands. Playing with their minds, with their emotions, she made her way across the wire, almost “falling” twice, just to hear their shrieks, and the applause that came with it as she righted herself.
Foot planted on the wooden platform, other foot joining it, she took off her blindfold, raising her hands into the air, showing off to the crowd. Taking a bow, she looked to the left, as a man with a sword began to come at her. With a large, over dramatized shocked face (she had to play it so the crowd could feel it), she took two steps back before her heel hit the wire. She looked over her shoulder, obviously scared now, and the whole circus went silent, save for a single timpanist, rolling his note. Lights went out, and two spotlights found their target, on Tenshi and her pursuer. With each step that he took, she took one of equal length backward. Three steps, and she turned and ran across the wire, to tumultuous applause. But, as she reached the opposite platform, a third spotlight appeared, highlighting another man, a doppleganger of the first. He approached, and Tenshi turned, running comically towards the opposite man. This continued, as the two advanced, giving Tenshi smaller and smaller space, the timpani slowly crescendoing, until finally they were right on her, swords raised. Tenshi turned to the crowd, gave a scream, closed her eyes...
And with three loud snare raps, and the crash of cymbals, the swords came down...
And Tenshi fell backward. She was now hanging upside down by her toes, blonde hair dangling from her head. The crowds' screams and shrieks of fear turned into roars of pleasure and excitement, as their heroine made it out from beneath the swords! The band picked up, playing classical carnival music, as she began to swing, back and forth, until her hands were close enough to where the two men could grab them, and helped her swing up, somersaulting through the air, and landing on the wire, facing the crowd. Arms upraised, Tenshi grasped her two helpers' hands in hers and the three took a careful bow, before the two men ran to opposite sides, back to the platforms, and Tenshi began bouncing up and down on the wire, higher each time.
More lights came on, allowing the crowd to see the hanging trapeze, the two frightening men from before now dressed in bright blues, reds and yellows. They each grabbed a trapeze, and began swinging, using their arms and legs to do tricks and flips, landing on each other's bar, suspended by two wires. All the while, Tenshi was going higher and higher, until finally, with another flip, she was grabbed by one of the flying trapeze men, and flipped with him, legs landing with the bend on the bar. The crowd was going wild at this amazing display, this flight of people. Light, casting shadows on the back canvas, made it seem all the more dangerous, risky. Suddenly, a hoop of fire appeared and the two men took turns tossing Tenshi through, never so much as touching the licking flames.
Tossing, flipping, the three went through the air, gracefully being caught or catching, swinging, flipping over the bars. Then suddenly, a minor chord was played by the band, and the three of them looked at each other worried. The crowd once again was quiet, not a sound being made, not even by the babies, who didn't have enough development to tell where they were, or what was going on. The whole tent was in suspense, as, with a jerk, the trapeze started to move. They were now being spun, slowly, in a clockwise circle, the fire hoop spinning counter clockwise. A timpanist began playing that note again, as the two men looked at each other, unsure of what to do, Tenshi hanging from one of their hands. The one not holding her motioned with his hands to toss her, but the other shook his head. The first gave an exasperated look, the trapeze spinning only slowly, and motioned harder with his hands. Tenshi's trapeze artist looked down at her, and she shook her head hurriedly. 'No,' she seemed to say, 'don't throw me, I'll just hit the fire.'
The timpani crescendoed once more, as he began to swing Tenshi back and forth, she struggling against his hands, but he held only tighter. When enough momentum was reached, he let go, the timpani stopped, and Tenshi let out a scream. It looked like she wasn't going to make it through the hoop, that she would hit it and fall, the crowd took a large intake of breath, some closed their eyes...
And she landed safely in the hands of second trapeze artist. The cheers this time were so loud that the band couldn't be heard to start up again. The two of them tossed Tenshi back and forth, through the hoop, over the hoop. Even when they began turning in opposite directions, as difficult as it looked to the crowd, they pulled it off with ease, to the laughter and applause that they so deserved. They smiled at their job, handing Tenshi to each other as they met up, tossing her when opposite.
But, of course, nobody is perfect. As one of them tossed Tenshi, the other's hand slipped, and the immediate stop of the band caused everybody to be quiet, letting one sound ring out, Tenshi's scream, as the lights turned off. The sound of crying could be heard, cries of outrage, shock, but nothing louder than the sound of the main overhead spotlight turning on, the loud click and thunk echoing, the light pointed at what appeared to be a hole below the trapeze artists. And from this whole ascended a white shape, conical, spinning. It spun, faster and faster, ascending faster, until, right at the top, just before hitting the pointed canvas, it stopped.
The wings erupted out, body sprawled in an X, one hand holding a long, golden spear, the other a silver buckler. Armor clad, Tenshi showed off her wings, displaying herself in her full beauty and glory. It was a vision out of a fairy tale, or a Norse legend. The Valkyrie girl swooped down to whooping and hollering, the crowd now gone berserk as the finale of their show did flips, barrel rolls, cartwheels, the band played loud, joyous music, and the lights spun, all sorts of colors, purple, pink, blue, yellow, green, the whole circus came out in the rings. Everybody taking a bow where they were, the elephant on a ball, the trapeze artists flipping through the air, clowns coming out of cars, the whole shebang. Even Adrienne was there, in the middle, the ring master, taking a large bow.
The show was over, it was time for packing up. The audience had left, the animal trainers carefully caging their portions of the show. Tenshi was walking with the two trapeze artists, Flinn and Svehn, or so they were called during the show. Most people didn't give their real names, to the crowd or each other. The circus crowd was an odd bunch, and odd things happened around them, it was never good to be able to be caught by the authorities.
The three of them, the two Swedish twins and a valkyrie, walked back through the camp, laughing raucously at the act they had just done.
“Did you see your face? Haha! When you fell, you for seriously looked like it wasn't part of the act! You are such a great at fooling the audience, Tenshi!” Svehn gave her a nudge, and she laughed with him.
“Actually, Svehn, I had thought that you're face when you dropped me was rather realistic. Like you hadn't meant to, that I'd actually slipped, and that's the way it felt.” Flinn gave a snort of laughter.
“Well, lucky for you you have your wings, then, eh?” They laughed all three together, stopping in the middle of the circle of wagons.
“Well, I have to go get ready for leaving tomorrow. Good night you too.”
The twins tipped their fingers at her, and went back to their own wagon, still laughing and shoving each other. Tenshi waved, smiling. She was especially glad that she'd found a place where she fit in, somewhere she belonged. With a yawn, she stretched out her wings and arms, walking towards her own van. Tomorrow...moving day. How she hated moving day. But, that was a problem for future Tenshi. For now, she needed to sleep
