It was quiet and peaceful. There was a feeling of serenity in the cool air. It was dark out, however, Ryson felt safe... because his father was there. Ryson's father, Jagaimo, was always so level headed and calm that both Ryson and his brother, Ciro, always felt at ease. In fact, watching his tail smoothly swish back and forth was enough to keep the two distracted for long periods of time, well it kept Ryson more distracted than Ciro. Jaigamo rested his hands on his sons' shoulders and pulled them in a little closer and softly spoke to them while looking out into the distance.
"Do you see that out there? The moon? Do you see how big it is? How bright it is?"
The boys answered simultaneously.
"Yes, Father."
Jaigamo smiled.
"Good. Now, remember how it looks. Memorize every detail that you can. Because that big glowing rock in the sky can guide you almost anywhere. It's the reason we can see at all at night."
The boys let out soft "Ooos" and "Ahhs" not really understanding what their father was talking about. There was something in his voice that sounded kind of hopeful to Ryson, but Ciro sensed a tinge of sadness.
"If you two are ever feeling lost, just look at the moon and it will guide you to where you need to go."
He then placed his hand on Ciro's head and met his eyes. Then did the same to Ryson.
"But... if there is ever a time that you can't see the moon, then look to each other. You may not share the same father, but you share the same mother. Which by all accounts makes you brothers, never let anyone tell you otherwise. Be each other's moon and guide one another through the dark. Fight for each other, and protect each other. Because no matter what happens..."
He paused and quickly reflected on events from long ago.
"You will always be best friends. So train hard and learn each other's strengths and weaknesses. Improve together. And strengthen your brotherly bond to its absolute limits, and then some."
The boys were silent as they saw tears well up in their father's eyes. This was rare, and they knew it meant he was serious. Ryson didn't know at the time, but Ciro knew that Jaigamo had a brother once and that they had a falling out that was never resolved. This was all he knew about it though. They absorbed their father's wise ramblings as best they could and moved in to hug him. He accepted eagerly, also unusual, and they remained in a warm embrace for a few minutes. They may have hugged him longer if they had known what would happen only a few days later.
