History:
Rock Cocklin was an ace pilot. One of the best in the galaxy, if the stories are true. But Rock hasnât gotten in the cockpit of his old ride in years. Not since she walked into his life and turned it upside down.
She was an angel, or at least the spitting image of one. Golden aura, big beautiful wings, the works. And she needed his help. Now Rock hadnât been in the business of helping people - not unless they needed him for a smuggling operation, and even then he didnât work for free. But this time it was different. Sheâd come to him with a cargo job, a simple courier gig, all he had to do was dodge customs officials and any other government types. No scans allowed. He took the job without asking any questions, which was his standard procedure, but when she showed up to make the cargo drop, he had to speak up.
See, she was trying to give him a baby. Her daughter, apparently, with the same golden aura and a tiny pair of wings. Turns out they were being hunted, pursued across the galaxy by some psycho in purple and white armor. He was remorseless, and she didnât want her daughter to die like that. So sheâd come to Rock to get the baby somewhere safe - an adoptive family on the outskirts of known space. Everything had been arranged, he just needed to get the girl to her new home.
Rock Cocklin was never in the business of helping people. But he was one of the best pilots in the galaxy. He could dodge Galactic Patrol and Saiyan Empire ships with ease. He could take refuge in dangerous ion storms and asteroid fields. Heâd even outrun an Arcosian Raptor fleet once. Nobody else could get this child to safety.
Only he failed that mission. Shot down in a Saiyan-controlled sector, Rock managed to survive the closest thing to a crash landing heâd ever experienced in his career. Rock came out of it injured, but alive. The child, on the other handâŠ
He built her a cairn near his crash site, honoring her as well as he could. He didnât dare reach out to her mother, to let her know what had happened. Not without risking the messageâs interception by the bastards that shot him down in the first place. So he covered up his ship - a once glorious custom job that was equal parts cargo ship and fighter - and built himself a little place to live in the Shikk wilderness. He rested, and healed. He survived. Eventually, he moved himself closer to civilization, taking jobs as a mechanic, and then as a logistics consultant for mob-owned shipping operations. He had his wreck transported to a private storage facility.
He still visits her grave from time to time, laying down flowers or candy or small childrenâs toys. Heâs not himself on those days. On those days, the resigned mask of complacency and defeat is replaced by the burning hot fury of regret. Heâd always known heâd fail to deliver one day. Always known heâd have to retire. But he didnât want it happen like this.
