Name: Torei
Species: Namekian
Gender: n/a (appears male)
Age: 52
Appearance:
Torei's physiology is pretty self-explanatory - he is a typical Namekian with a slightly discoloured face from his eyes to his jaw. He frequently carries a staff, carved by his own hand. Torei's clothes are unimposing, usually any combination of red and white robes. He doesn't look special in any way, really.
History: Torei was hatched from an egg created by one of Namek's finest warriors, Midori, protector of the Heiwan village. Along with his co-protectors, who in reality were no match for Midori, Torei's father watched over a prosperous and peaceful time for the village and its elder, Furagu. There was not an elder on Namek who would have wished for a greater guardian, worker, or friend than Midori was for Furagu. Still, even powerful Namekian warriors age and wither. As Midori passed his 450th birthday, his health seriously started to decline. The once all-powerful peace-keeper was becoming a shadow of his former self, a more recognised master to the younger villagers than a hardened hero fending off attackers and monsters. This posed a problem not only for Heiwan and its populace, but the whole of Namek too; in earlier life Midori led one of many groups of warrior Namekians into battle against a band of pirates who had killed to learn the secrets of Namek's mystical heritage. Midori's campaign in the albeit short-lived assault was vital. Elders all across Namek agreed that fighters like Midori could not simply be allowed to go out of fashion as they die away, for the planet's sake.
Despite Midori's previous refusal to produce any offspring, his elder Furagu set about convincing the warrior that it was his duty. The argument put to Midori was that his blood, his lifeforce, contained the potential to produce a fighter as vibrant and powerful as himself, and this was not a resource to be wasted. Midori himself housed concerns that only producing children from Namek's most able bodies could lead to a race crowded with too much power for its own good; Namekians are a peaceful people, and Midori did not want this to be disrupted simply because some elders had a craving for the most powerful warriors. Midori eventually agreed to one child, with the condition that he and only he would be the one raising the boy. Though Midori's trust for Furagu's intentions was soul-deep, he did not want his son to become nothing more than a nameless powerlevel for enemies of Namek, or even enemies of Heiwan, to exploit. The elders rejoiced, and thus Torei was hatched, the first and only son of a great Namekian guardian, Midori.
Much to Furagu's surprise, though not necessarily to Midori's, Torei was hatched with a distinctly average Namekian powerlevel. There was no 'hidden ability' he possessed, and even flying came a little unnaturally to the youngster. As elders bickered and argued about Torei's 'right to power' and whether the heritage of the father was as important as had been documented, Midori set about building a relationship with his son with what life he had left. Through his first five years of life Torei was only really taught three things: restraint, beauty, and care. Torei's sparring experiences were usually simply Midori feigning defeat, only to prove that he could have easily defeated his son, but also outlining the reasons why he wouldn't. He taught Torei to control his fighting temperament. Midori's next important lessons were to show his son the beauty of planet Namek, and to ensure Torei never forgot the importance behind observing its grace so that he would know what it is he would strive to protect. Caring was in Midori's nature, and he never hesitated to take Torei on his many errands for Heiwan villagers and those further afield. Midori would often get Torei doing the heavy lifting, partly due to his own advancing age and partly to teach that putting a smile on somebody's face should not be considered easy or 'passive'.
Torei's training with his father declined as the latter reached the end of his life. Instead of learning from the village's 'master', as Midori had become, Torei took to training and sparring with his friends. As Furagu watched on, it quickly became apparent that even a childhood of training with Midori had not released the latent potential he believed had to be hiding within Torei. Torei, though, took little notice - his father had taught him to be more than a fighter, no matter how noble. Torei was understanding, he was curious, he had developed bonds with other villagers as deep as any despite living solely with his father. As far as was Midori was concerned, he had succeeded, not failed as Furagu began to believe. As Midori passed away peacefully, a barely teenage Torei held his dying father's hand tightly. Furagu watched on with regret, knowing that Torei was not the guardian he desired. In a final flurry he implored Midori to release his energy into Torei, to make the boy strong, to impart some of that precious fighting spirit onto him. Midori, realising Furagu had not learned the lessons Torei had learned, charged his ki one final time and sent energy shooting into the air.
"You.. are not... me," Midori explained in his last breath to Torei, "I knew from the beginning... Your clan is the... dragon." To Furagu's delight the ki wrapped around Torei like a blanket, but then quickly burst away into the ground. As Midori passed and his son and senior left the hut, they saw his final message: Heiwan had become the most beautiful village on Namek, with skyscraper trees and water sprinkling through the ground. Furagu may have frowned, but Torei understood, and a smile crept onto his weary, grief-stricken face.
From that point on Torei didn't involve himself too much with Furagu and his band of protective warriors, instead seeking to unlock his dragon clan potential that his father had revealed to him. To doubt a wise Namekian like Midori would be, well, unwise. It was clear, though, through Midori's teaching methods, that he had not intended for Torei to learn his trade via books and scriptures. Torei had no desire to learn and better himself in any way differently to that which would honour the spirit of his father. The young Namekian became relatively infamous amongst elders all over the planet as a loose canon, a wild child. But in truth he was never too far away to aid his friends and neighbours, Torei just wanted to discover himself in the fullest, not discover what an ancient scripture said he should become. He practiced harnessing his ki to create life, to repair destruction, but his ability was weak and untrained. The destructive force of Torei's ki was, in early life, the much more prevalent feature of his power. On one of his many quests for fulfillment, Torei discovered a temple that would change his understanding of Namek and his abilities forever.
What should have been a routine delivery, taking a gift from Heiwan to Hizens village, turned into a voyage of discovery for Torei. On his flight he felt his head go dizzy, giving Torei cause for concern as his father had always ensured the boy could trust his own senses above all else. Still, Torei remained committed to his good deed, but a few feet further and an illusion appeared in the sky which seemed to strike a lightning fast blow on Torei's brain and sent him crashing to the ground. As he looked up, Torei saw a faint image of his father disappear into thin air, before the ground beneath him started to grow with a green light. Unusually sidetracked, Torei investigated, scratching away at the ground before falling through a hole hidden in the surface. Underground was pitch black, but upon lighting the area with a ki ball, Torei could see miles and miles of tunnel stretching in each direction with flames beginning to light up miraculously along the way. The walls were plastered with carvings of pictures and ancient texts. Torei could only make out a few odd words that seemed similar - 'tyrant', 'new life', and curiously 'Earth hero', with a capital 'E'. There were pictures of beings with wild horns and long flowing hair, unlike anything Torei had seen before. The pictures told stories of conflict and battle, with Namekian vegetation clearly set out in the images' backgrounds. Most interest of all was a carving of a Namekian with a long, flowing beast swirling behind him, probably a thousand times the size of the Namekian. Underneath was 'Earth' once more, with a capital 'E', and the words 'mystical Namek, deity'. His interest aroused, that was the first and last day Torei ever forgot to complete an errand.
Torei gazed in awe as he pondered the mystery of these 'caves', before sealing them up and returning to visit on every day where he had time. His strange apparition of Midori before finding them may mean that Torei's destiny is more linked with the caves than he knows, but the young explorer's thoughts were solely on finding what secret they held. Torei found that his new ability, Sensory Shock (activated by accident a few times with hilarious results), had manifested itself after his visit to the caves. It didn't seem very 'dragon-clan' as he perhaps hoped, but Torei's visits to the caves were clearly a step in the right direction to uncovering what abilities his father could see in the boy. Torei's fixation led to him building a staff from the debris in the caves, fashioned after the carving of a staff in the 'mystical Namek' drawing.
Now older, and wiser, Torei has started to develop very basic dragon-clan-like abilities, but nothing to make him stand out from other villagers with the same birthright. He found that his time in the caves was actually hindering his ability to do good, and after leaving them behind Torei found his powers and means to help Namek getting stronger. Torei maintains relationships with many of Namek's warriors, trying to teach them the ways of beauty and restraint as Midori had taught before, although with varying degrees of success. Torei seems no longer concerned with continuing the 'spirit' of his father's teachings, but rather he is developing his own philosophies to exchange with his fellow Namekians; he hopes for the better. Namek's elders, however, are still unconvinced as to whether Torei will be any help at all in restoring the powerful protectors of the planet featured in Midori's lost generation. Torei, on the other hand, does not share their view that his father's hatching him has any greater purpose than to be 'helpful'; he is not his father, he is only one Namekian in a world of bigger and better things than himself.
Starting Planet: Namek
Techniques:
Offensive
Tamasho - For this beam attack Torei begins by charging sparkling energy from some focal point on his body, often from his chest to be contained in his palms. Torei then 'grips' what seems to be nothing (in reality invisible ki) in one hand, and releases it as a glowing green beam. [N1]
Support
Bukujutsu - Torei has the ability to fly using his ki.
Sensory Shock - In practice the technique looks like a faint and jagged green beam 'zapping' its way towards an opponent from Torei's antennae. Torei's special technique sends a shockwave of electrical messages through the body of his target which, whilst not felt as any kind of 'impact', has an ulterior motive - the shockwave 'reboots' the target's senses and makes them forget the last 5 seconds ever took place. Even though its likely if Torei is fighting that he's been fighting for more than 5 seconds, the burst of pulses in his opponent's brain can lead them off their train of thought and shock them into brief inaction.
