The saiyan spirit had spent a fair amount of time wondering the forsaken planes of Hell. Honestly, he had expected it to be much much worse, with screaming souls, fiery pits of pain and hate, and gratuitous lava pools. However, Hell, or Home for Infinite Losers as some of the more jokey ogres called it, was rather tame in comparison to what Mayze thought it’d be. It seemed to serve as more of a purgatory type place, as it really wasn’t all that bad. Boring, sure, but it could’ve been worse. Although, spending an eternity here without a body sounded really lame. He’d have to fix that soon.
“You’re General Mayze of the Solar Saiyan Empire,” the floating ball halted in his tracks, and turned to the source of the voice, spotting a small, lithe arcosian standing with his arms crossed.
“How can you tell?” he was genuinely curious. WIthout a body it should’ve been impossible to identify him. His ki should’ve also been impossible to detect, he was dead after all. His lifeforce was gone, and therefore he emitted no ki. His power level was essentially zero.
The arcosian gave a fierce scowl and ignored his question,“You remember me saiyan? You killed me back on Kanassa when you were with that damn robot. I’m going to get you for that. You're going to pay for what you did to me and my brothers! I , Zero, will end your existance.”
The general gave the spirit equivalent of a frown, “You're a little late to the party bud. Maybe you haven’t noticed but I’m dead. Not much you can do to a soul that’s already kicked the bucket.”
Zero lightly chuckled for a moment before cackling loudly like a madman. He doubled over, clutching his stomach. Apparently the arcosian found something hilarious about what he had just said. Maybe the changeling was a bit off his rocker from his time spent in hell. Whatever the case, he looked pretty damn crazy.
”Ha-aaaaa, fool. Naive idiotic saiyan. You know nothing, Nothing! You’ve been in the afterlife for what? A week? There are other ways to harm those within Hell! And I’ll gladly show them to you!
If Mayze could’ve rolled his eyes, he certainly would have. He really didn’t want to bother with this crazed soul. It wasn’t worth it to get the idiot to tell him how to get his body back. He could figure it out from other, less manic, source. And, though he seriously doubted it, he didn’t really want to stick around and see if the arcosian could actually harm him. He rather liked being… sorta alive? Conscious? Whatever this state he was in, he much preferred it over eternal darkness or nothingness.
“Yea yea, whatever,” he sighed and floated away. He really hoped the maniac wouldn’t follow him, but the damn thing probably would. People aiming for revenge tended to be rather persistent when it came to their goal. Especially when said target of revenge took part in the annihilation of their homeworld.
Unfortunately for the former general, it seemed his new ‘friend’ had other thoughts in mind. The arcosian harrumphed and extended his wrist with pursed lips. Through some black magic, Mayze suddenly stopped and floated backwards towards Zero’s outstretched palm. He had really hoped to find a nice place to relax for the rest of eternity, but fate seemed to be against him. If only the Super Saiyan had retained his body.
He didn’t really bother struggling; it was futile to do so. His power level was 0, zilch, nada. He couldn’t sense ki and he didn’t have any limbs. It was quite miserable really, able to do virtually nothing. He couldn’t eat, drink, sleep, nothing. All he had was his thoughts and his past, and all he could do was think back on it. He couldn’t occupy his time by training, and most other souls didn’t really wanna talk; not that Mayze was much of a talker in the first place. He wondered if that was Hell’s intention, to merely give you your thoughts and the time to reflect on them. It made a lot of sense.
Really, he wouldn’t mind if whatever the arcosian did to him just caused him to cease to exist. Eternal nothingness honestly seemed better than sitting around and dwelling on the past. That’ was something Mayze actively avoided while alive, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to dwell on it while dead.
He suddenly stopped, the strange invisible force that had been pulling him loosened, and faded away. A sharp, pained gasp rang out behind the saiyan. Frowning, he turned around to see what had transpired.
The arcosian stood still, gaping as he let out pained croaking noises. A sword blade protruded from his chest, blood dripping from the wound. It flowed down his body, starkly contrasting with the sharp, flawless white of his skin. It looked incredibly painful, and judging from the noises the alien made, it was.
That was rather confusing, he had assumed people in the Afterlife couldn’t be killed considering they were, well, already dead. But it seemed like the arcosian who had a blade protruding from his chest and was losing bucketfuls of blood was certainly in the process of dying. What happened if you died while dead? Did you just cease to exist? He shook his head, better not start thinking about that lest he get a headache.
The halo above the arcosians head faded, and his body began to glow with a bluish tint. The glow became brighter and brighter, before suddenly the body began to fall apart in small blue chips that floated into the air. As the glow faded, all that remained was a small blue puffball, and behind him, the wielder of the sword.
”What have you done to me?” Zero’s voice was incredibly shrill and incredibly annoying, ”This isn’t according to keikaku!” Keikaku? What the fuck did that mean? ”Y-You promised! You said you’d lead me toward him! I- huh, wait, what’re you doing? Stop! Stop! ARGHHHHHHHH,” the arcosian’s soul was sucked backwards into the sword. Zero’s loud screaming continued until the entirety of his soul was, from what Mayze inferred, absorbed into the sword. The Super Saiyan was relieved that that annoying piece of crap was hopefully, and permanently gone from this world. If he had to hear that shrill, high pitched squeal again he didn’t know what he’d do.
“Did you kill him?” he asked lamely.
“Mas o Menos,” the voice sounded familiar, but mas o Menos? The hell did that mea- “Ah, forgive me, wrong tongue.” the silhouette chuckled before stepping into the light, dragging the sword through the ground behind him.
His, ‘savior,’ for lack of a better term ,wore a black cloak that his his features. The general tried to get a glimpse of his face, but all he managed to see was an infinite blackness that seemed to peer into his soul… which was funny now that he thought about since he was nothing but a soul.
“I must say, I am pleased to be rid of that annoying pest. He had served past his usefulness,” the beings voice felt all encompassing, as if amplified by some strange force. It also sounded similar to a posh, arrogant earthling, “To answer your question, Zero is, by most definitions dead. In fact, he doesn’t even exist anymore. I’ve absorbed his soul and converted into shoki, or what others may call, ‘spirit energy.”
“Absorb it, how?”
He laughed, “You pick up on a few tricks when you’ve been stuck here as long as I.”
Really? What a lame excuse, was it really hard to tell a simple mortal like Mayze?
Mayze frowned, “That idiot mentioned something about you leading him towards him? How?”
The figure remained uncannily still as he spoke, “I traced your spiritual signature. It’s the same as your ki signature, yet different. It can’t be sensed through typical means. It takes a certain… finesse. I already knew your ki signature from the time I spent observing the mortal realm. I used my telekinesis to speak to you whilst you were waiting to be judged.”
So that’s why the voice was so irritability familiar. It was the same voice who had contacted him while he was being judged, but why the interest in him? He frowned, “What for? Why have you taken a special interest in me?”
“Because we can help each other. I can give you a body, and help you escape from this Hell. And you can help me escape too.”
The general was wary, “Why should I accept your help? The last person you ‘helped’ didn’t exactly fare too well. What’s to stop you from backstabbing me too?”
His ‘savior’ laughed before speaking, “Smart. Your race is more intelligent than given credit for,” the figure paused for a moment, seemingly eyeing the general before he continued, “I give you my word that I won’t betray you, General Mayze.”
The general eyed the demon with a strong gaze. It was strange, the figure stood perfectly still, face hidden, breathing silent. It was almost as if the figure wasn’t really alive, as if it were some robot. To be this stoic and emotionless was unnatural. Mayze felt uncomfortable and nervous. Still-
Still, the offer was better than nothing.
Finally, he broke the stifling silence, “Deal”
His new ally robotically stepped forward, his voice booming, “Excellent. Our partnership will be a most intriguing endeavor,” the demon held out a hand.
The demon probably wanted him to shake it. Was he dense?
Maybe this partnership was a mistake…
“Not sure why you’re holding out your hand like an idiot.”
“Ah, yes. That’s right. Forgive me for my rudeness” the demon retracted his hand and let it fall to his side.
Huh, that was interesting.
“Heh, that’s funny. I half expected my existence to end there.”
“Hm, whatever do you mean?”
“Tch, quite the airhead huh? I just called you an idiot, and you apologized. You didn’t react to my insult. Quite different from a stereotypical demon.”
This demon reminded him o-
No, best not to think about that.
“...I see.”
He clearly didn’t. Oh well.
Mayze sighed, “Nevermind that. How do I regain my body?”
“Ah, it’s quite simple really, you just need to gather enough shoki.”
There was that term again
‘Shoki’, what exactly was it? The demon had mentioned spirit energy earlier.
“Shoki, huh? You mentioned that earlier. Something about… spirit energy?”
“Aye, spirit energy. It’s found in all living or once living things.”
“You mentioned absorbing earlier. Can you only gain shoki through absorbing and erasing another?”
“No, due to its abundance in the Afterlife, spirits naturally absorb the residual shoki. It can be a very slow process, however, and absorbing another’s shoki is much, much quicker. I should note that you don’t have to absorb all of their shoki. You can leave enough for them to continue existing.”
Absorbing souls huh?
Hmm, even if he didn’t take enough to kill them, he wasn’t comfortable stealing the shoki of someone else. It’s not like he cared about any of these souls, it just didn’t-
Didn’t sit right with him.
It’s not like he was going soft or anything. It just didn’t sit right with his pride to steal something. That’s all it was.
He sighed. Death sucked. He hoped that boy got away. God…
...He was going to kill Xylo. Slowly, so so slowly. He’d make that namekian pay.
“Hello? You understand?” a voice interrupted his rambling thoughts.
“Huh- Oh, yea. Got it.”
“Magnificent! All right, let's get star-”
“Is there no other way for me to regain my body?
“What do you mean ‘another way’?”
He was gonna make him come right out and say it.
“Geh, I mean- what I mean is…”
Why was it so hard for him to say it?
“Tch, it rubs me the wrong way to steal from someone else without fighting for them.”
There. He said it. Hopefully the demon didn’t just end him right there for-
“Hahahahahahahahahaha, t-t-that’- hahahahahahaha.”
He was laughing… laughing! What was so funny? Mayze hadn’t said anything remotely humorous. This demon was full of stupid surprises.
“As expected from a proud saiyan. Hehe, no matter, that can be dealt with. Fortunately for you, saiyan, I have a plethora of shoki stored up. And, I can use the shoki to create your body.”
Oh, well that made things simple. Still, he’d be lying to himself if he said he didn’t like it being handed to him. It left a foul taste in his mouth, and he wasn’t keen on oweing this demon any sort of favors. Really, he should be trying to avoid being in the demon’s debt. If folktales were anything to go bye, demons were an underhanded and tricky bunch. Distasteful creatures, really. But, well, he didn’t really have any other choice but to work with the demon.
Really, how could a mortal being ever hope to escape the afterlife without help? It’s not like you could waltz on outta here with a shit eating grin on your face without a care in the world. Well-
Actually, maybe you could... Xylo escaped after all. If that slughead could escape this hellhole, then Mayze could too.
“Let’s do it. Create me a body worthy of a Super Saiyan.”
“Excellent,” Mayze could feel the Demon’s terrifying smirk, “This’ll be different from the typical process, normally y-”
“Spare me the details,” really, he didn’t have time for this. He didn’t need to have every little detail explained to him, and it’s not like it mattered as long as he got his body back in the end. Once he had his body, the possibilities were limitless. Living in a world where he didn’t have to eat, sleep, or drink meant he could train for as long as he wanted.
A few months in this world, and he’d come back stronger than Xylo. Stronger than that boy, and stronger than Ouroboros. He’d be unstoppable, and the thought delighted him.
“Getting straight to business, hmm? Very well, as you wish, Mayze.”
A blinding light filled the immediate vicinity, and Mayze felt a strange sensation. His senses shut down, leaving him feeling as if he were drifting in eternal nothingness. And then, just like a snap of a fingers, his senses returned.
He could distinctly feel the ground beneath his feet. He could feel and hear his breath. He could even mov-
His knees buckled, sending him sprawling onto the ground.
Maybe he couldn’t move just yet…
His companion laughed, “It takes some getting used to after being without a body for so long. Fret not, though, it’s like riding a bicycle. It’ll come back to you.”
He gingerly nodded before cautiously rising. He inspected his wrist, noting with satisfaction that the demon had felt to clothe him is his traditional saiyan getup. Including the scouter.
The scouter, hmm.
He casually grabbed the device from his eye, looked at it for a moment, and clenched his fist, smashing the delicate device into hundreds of little pieces. He let the small fragments fall from his and fall unto the brimstone surface. He looked up-
Only to see the sword of his ‘ally’ lunging at him.
Acting on reflex, he sidestepped to his right, dodging by a hairsbreadth. As the blade came around a second time, he ducked under it, and swore he felt a few hairs get cut off.
“What…… the fuck…. are you… doing?” he managed to get out through various dodges.
His attacker stopped, and let the sword fall to his side like a robot.
“Good to see you’ve retained your skill, saiyan. Sorry for the abrupt onslaught, but I needed to ensure you were strong enough for our future plans.”
Future plans? That sounded ominous from a demon. He sighed, “Tch, whatever.”
“Anyway, I must be off. Business to attend to I’m afraid. I’ll see you again soon, General Mayze. Sayonara.”
And just like that, the demon was gone, no evidence of him having even been here in the first place.
Tch, how rude. The demon hadn't even given his name.
