Treylech's mind wandered as he floated aimlessly through the desolate and seemingly endless wastelands of Hell. He had recently started asking around for any sort of rumor that could lead him back to Earth. He kept coming up empty.
He almost felt like the task was impossible, but there wasn’t anything else for him to do except wander. The boredom seeped into his soul and was the only thing that drove him at this point. He floated aimlessly up to a nearby ogre. ”You don’t happen to know a way to return to life, do you?”
The ogre glanced down at him. ”Hmmm…I reckon I did ‘ear a few rumors. Somethin’ ‘bout a man in a cave ‘er somethin’”
”Man in a cave?”
”Indeed. Man that likes to live in secrecy. Speaks in riddles ‘nless he likes ya. Bit of a louse iffin ya ask me. Doesn’t sound like th’ friendly type. You can ask ‘im if ya want. No sweat on me. He’s in the caves just South of here. Take caution, though. Likely he won’t take too kindly to ya, being a visitor an’ all.”
”Riddles is better than not getting an answer. Thanks.”
Treylech turned and headed for the caves the ogre spoke of. Thankfully being a spirit made getting by obstacles a breeze.
He came to a stop out front of the cave. There was a wave of uneasiness that flowed throughout his mind. The cave came with a aura of unwelcome. It left him speechless. If he had legs, this is where they would fail to function. He felt an energy within the cave that felt both familiar and foreign at the same time.
He floated forward slowly, coming to a stop just inside of the cave. A little ways in a pair of eyes watched him in silence. He couldn’t see the man’s body at first.
”You wish to return to the living, correct?”
”Yeah. I’ve still got things I was supposed to do.”
”You and everyone else. What makes you think I’ll just give up the information?” The man stepped forward from the shadows and revealed himself before sitting on a rock nearby.
Treylech stared at the man for a moment in shock. ”You…You’re my father….”
The man looked up at him, flabbergasted. ”Treylech?”
”What happened? Why are you here…? Why are you dead and in hell of all places?” Treylech floated forward for a moment, but stopped when he saw his dad holding up his hand.
”Treylech, I…I made a mistake. I got too far in debt with a bad group of people and I didn’t have any way to pay them back. They took my life. I wasn’t ready to face your mother, so I came here. I didn’t realize it was a permanent choice.”
”People say you know how to get back, though. Why didn’t you come back?”
Treylech’s father scratched the back of his head awkwardly. ”Because I’m not strong enough. There’s a portal nearby that can take you back to Earth. It’ll close once one more person steps through. Only problem is if you’re not strong enough, it could have some devastating effects.”
Treylech thought quietly for a moment. ”It’s a risk I need to make…” He muttered this softly to himself. His father didn’t seem to understand. ”I have to get back to Earth. I just started making a name for myself. I want to make mom proud.”
”You shouldn’t use the portal. Wait for the next cycle. There may be one that isn’t as risky.”
Treylech hesitated. He was tired of waiting. He wanted to get back as soon as possible. Death was more than just a little boring. He knew he just ran into his father again, and he wanted to heed his father’s warning, but he was tired of waiting. He wanted to see her again.
Her.
He couldn’t remember her. He felt like his memory of this girl just kept fading away as time went on. He would figure it out once he returned to life. The drive to remember was powerful enough to keep a grasp on the need to remember.
He looked at his father again. ”Fine. I’ll stay away for now. I will go through when I can, though. I have things I need to do and I’ve put them off for long enough.”
His father nodded. ”I expect you to.”
”I'm going to go for now. I have to think things over.”
His father furrowed his brow. ”I just…” He sighed in disappointment. ”I understand. Take care.”
Treylech floated out of the cave and up into the sky to look around. He was ready to get out of hell and he didn’t care if his father didn’t think he was strong enough. He knew what he needed to look for now. He also had a general location. It could still take a while, though. He knew he could wait until he got stronger, but he had been stuck in hell for months. It was getting to him.
Without any more waiting, he took to scouring the caves nearby. The red landscape was dark and foreboding as always, but it didn’t really matter to him. He would look anyways. If there was a chance to return to Earth he was going to take it. To hell with the cost.
It was his second chance to make things right.
