You are looking at a closed metallic door. From behind it, you can hear intermittent noises that leads to believe someone is taking quite the beating. Let’s not head into the room already. Let me tell you a bit more about the settings of this scenery I’m dragging you into. We’re on Mars. This is the Galactic Patrol headquarters. We are years back in the past, when Nemo’s face and soul hasn’t been marked by scars. This takes place when Nemo was at the age of thirty three, nineteen years after he joined the Galactic Patrol. It’s a tale of when Nemo fought the most formidable foe of his entire life.
Next, we’re back to the beating sounds. We’re inside the room, finally. We see the body of a shirtless male individual be hurled against the wall. He falls slowly sliding down, before falling on his ass sat down on the floor. We don’t know him so I won’t bother naming him or providing much more of a description other than that he served the patrol and was currently sparring with Nemo. We see our protagonist standing in his fighting stance, staring at his defeated opponent. He relaxes himself and stands erect as he realizes his partner doesn’t have energy left to continue their training section. The namekian bows in respect and steps towards the man, giving him a hand in order to help the warrior stand up again.
Suddenly, someone opens the door. It is one of the martian officers. Just a quick note; these are not to be considered patrolmen. They are law enforcers that operate in Mars only, also under the rulership of King Lutuch.
– “Mr. Nemo, I was informed you would be here” – The squid like individual states. The greenie had just finished helping his colleague stand up.
– “May I help you, soldier?” – Nemo inquires, wondering what was the officer’s business with him.
– “Your highness requested your presence in the assembly room. You are to be sent on a mission right away” – The alien mollusk explains.
– “I’ll be there in a minute” – Nemo affirms.
Leaving the training room, the namekian takes a quick shower to remove his stink in order to be presentable to the Galactic King. He dries his face with a white towel with his name embroidered on it. Next, he is by the locker room, putting on some clean uniform: the usual violet jumpsuit, white boots and gloves and a torso armor piece with the emblem of the Galactic Patrol. He was now ready to see King Lutuch.
A few moments later, our hero is finally in the assembly room, where the squid king awaits for his soldier to arrive. As soon as the namekian gets in the authority’s presence, he kneels down, lowering his head in respect.
– “You called me, your highness?” – The namekian asks.
– “Yes, Nemo. I have a very special mission for you” – King Lutuch responds.
– “What is it that you request of me, my king?” – The green warrior inquires.
– “It has come to my knowledge that a certain species in a planet is facing dire days. Many have been inflicted with a terrible illness to which there is no cure, after being exposed to toxic residues present in the water. The representative of these species met with the king of the other to have a conference and discuss the issue, but he is irreducible regarding his resolve of not halting their technological advancements and only compromised to help their neighboor species to find a way to combat the illness and promised to try and reduce the production of toxic waste. I want you to speak to this person in the name of the Galactic Patrol and convince him using whatever means necessary, before they end up committing a genocide” – The king briefs.
– “Very well, my lord. Who is this individual and which planet am I heading to for this mission?” – The namekian interrogates.
– “You are to address King Zander on the matter. He is the leader of the chidaians from Planet Deidoro” – King Lutuch concludes. The last part causes Nemo to finally look up and into the galactic overlord’s eyes.
– “You said Deidoro?” –
In order for you to understand the story behind this, I will have to go on a long explanation about this planet and its inhabitants; one individual, specially. Let’s start with the planet. Deidoro is located on the North Galaxy and resembles Earth slightly in the sense that the majority of the planet is covered in water. It has five oceans: the North Ocean, the South Ocean, the East Ocean, the West Ocean and the Great Central Ocean. Not very creative names, I know, but I promise it will get a little better. I hope so, at least… Any way… all of these seas are directly connected to the Central Ocean through powerful currents. It has a handful of continents and islands I will not bother enumerating or naming as, unlike the five oceans, they aren’t actually important to the story.
Aside from the rich fauna and flora, the planet is populated by two races of sapient individuals: The zumians and the chidaians. The zumians are a race of merman (or triton) like humanoids. They possess tough skins as strong as scales with a greenish blue tone in general. They all have hair like humans and fin-shaped ears. They also have a bigger fin on their back. The zumians communities are always settled in the vicinities of the Five Seas. Being a people of the water, they need to bath everyday in salt water, else their skin begin to dry and their immunological system starts to fail, causing them to eventually get sick. Like always, I will be explaining my name puns throught this story. The race name zumian or zumi-seijin comes from the word mizu, which means water. Fits them well, right? You’ll also see that their name puns are themed on sea life forms, like fishes and aquatic mammals. The zumians are a peaceful folk and although some are able to manipulate ki, the ability is vastly uncommon amongst the members of the race. There is one individual that stands out, though; I’ll get to him in a minute, as soon as I describe the zumian’s littering neighbors.
The zumians share Planet Deidoro with the chidaians (or chidai-seijins). These are pointy-eared humanoids whose skins tend to a copperish tone, as if constituted by minerals and is indeed as strong as a rock. They don’t really have hair, but have gemstone-like patterns that resemble what would be hair. They do not need water to survive and thus, is the reason why they don’t care much about poisoning the seas with residues from their researches. Chidains’ race name derives from the Japanese word chidai, which means “earth”. Their name puns are themed around gemstone (King Zander comes from alexandrite). Like zumians, ki manipulating martial artists are uncommon, but there are some. They are more technologically advanced than zumians and also comprise the greatest portion of the deidorian races. So in the end, it is the people of the water and the people of the land, what brings us to the planet’s name pun. It is an amalgamation of the words deido and doro, which means mud, which is what you get when you get water and earth mixed. So, with that out of the way, we can now talk about our special little individual.
His name is Jiira (a pun on kujira, which means whale) and he is a Galactic Patrolman. Well… was until one year ago. He is a tall warrior, standing six feet and two inches tall (or a hundred and eighty eight centimeters). He has long, blonde hair and boasts a slim build, although he is acknowledge to be pretty strong. In fact, he is the most powerful zumian ever to exist and one of the most capable patrolmen of his time, known for his swordsmanship. He has a personality similar to that of Nemo himself; he is very dedicated to his duties, very loyal and very discipline. Above all, he is a great patriot. Those similar personality traits caused Nemo and Jiira to gravitate towards each other in the academy and soon, they had become best friends. Here's a picture of Jiira, so you have a better idea of what he looks like, also giving you a notion of the general characteristics the zumians have:
Jiira joined the patrol a few years before Nemo did, when his skills were recognized by one of the members of the faction. During the last eighteen years, they sparred countless times and even carried out a few missions together. However, last year, he has asked King Lutuch permission to head back to his home planet once it reached his ears that a strange illness befell his folk. It was the beginning of all this. Back then, no one knew what was really happening. King Shiro (the leader of the zumian people; name pun based on shiroi same, which is the word for white shark, the king of the sea) would receive occasional reports of his people contracting an unknown disease sporadically and eventually succumbing to it. There was no cure for it, because they couldn’t detect what was causing this mysterious sickness.
Jiira made a vow to remain in the planet to find out what was killing his folk. However, there wasn’t much information about it, other than that zumians seemed to get sick randomly, with their health deteriorating over time until they inevitably meet death. Naturally, seeing that there was nothing much Jiira could do, as this was a job suited for a scientist and not a warrior, King Lutuch demanded the zumian returned to Mars to carry on with his duties as a patrolman. Naturally, Jiira refused, claiming he had never broke a promise before and he wouldn’t start now, specially when it was about his people as a whole. Remember that I said Jiira is a big patriot?
The Galactic Patrol is a very strict organization regarding discipline, hence why it’s so hard to become one and why there is only a handful of actual patrolmen operating in the name of the faction. Jiira was a very competent agent and it would be pretty sad to let him go, but if he kept on being stubborn, refusing to obey direct orders from the king, there was nothing much he could do about it and needless to say, Jiira ended up being expelled from the Galactic Patrol. He was a noble and sensate man, though and pretty much expected this to happen. He accepted his punition with maturity and held no ill will towards King Lutuch and the other patrolmen.
When Nemo found out about Jiira’s insubordination, he became quite a bit upset, being the personification of the word “lawful” for a character’s alignment. He couldn’t understand how his friend could throw away his career like that, when there was nothing he could do about the disease. Since then, Nemo and Jiira haven’t trade a single word. The ex-patrolman probably figured his old friend was upset with his decision and gave him the space he needed to process his grudge. Soon enough, though, they would be talking to each other face-to-face. It would be around one year after Jiira headed back to Deidoro. In fact, he was the one who contacted the Galactic Patrol for further information about the zumians’ situation. Now, they finally figured out the origins of the zumian folk’s mysterious affliction.
From the explanation given by King Lutuch, you pretty much figured out what else the mermen folk discovered. Like I said, the zumian live by large bodies of salt water because they need to bath in it daily, else their health deteriorates. The core of the chidaian civilization is near the Great Central Ocean. Their quick expansion was dumping liters and liters of toxic waste into the waters of the Central Ocean and the strong currents were dispersing it, carrying the poison to every corner of the planet. Initially, the concentration of the poison in the water was way to small for it to be detected; it was the daily and prolonged exposition to it that was making the zumians sick. As the time passes and more residues continued to contaminate the waters, elevating the concentration, the morbidity and mortality rates of the disease rocketed. The only place that seemed to be unaffected initially was the Great Central Ocean vicinities, where King Shiro’s castle is located. That is because the strong currents would quickly cause the poisonous waste to disperse, accumulating in the other oceans. That’s why they couldn’t suspect it was something caused by the chidaians, since the closest area to the core of their civilization seemed disease free. It was only after the first death was registered in the central area that the zumian scientists started to get suspicious. Soon enough the presence of the harmful elements in the water was proved and King Shiro was quick to arrange a meeting with his neighboor to discuss the situation.
The relationship between the zumians and the chidaians was mostly neutral; they would stay away from each other mind their own business. But the nature of the current situation forced the triton king to break the silence and seek assistance. However, you know already what King Zander’s response was. And you don’t have to think much to know that simply compromising to help the water folk fight the disease or say you’ll reduce the environmental pollution won’t do balls about the people who are already ill and pretty much will only contribute to slow the speed at which the zumian marched to planet extinction. Perhaps with the backup of the space police, King Zander would reconsider his position.
Nemo wondered why Jiira asked specifically for him to carry out this task. This was not the ordinary criminal butt-kicking sort of job. It had more of a diplomatic take to it and Nemo has never really been good with words. Regardless of his reasons, unlike his old friend did in the past, Nemo would never ignore a direct order from his king. As soon as the namekian was finished receiving the briefing of his mission, he left the assembly room and headed to the patrolmen headquarters in order to pick up the rest of his equipment to make his way to Planet Deidoro.
Soon enough, we see Nemo in his faction clothes, sat in front of the panel of the Nautilus (Nemo’s personal ship… yes… it is a reference to 20.000 Leagues Under the Sea. And nautilus is also the name of an ancient mollusk species, what goes well with the whole slug theme for the namekians). He inputs the coordinates. For the first time, he would meet his old friend’s planet. And for the first time, they would break the silence that separate the two aliens during the past year. Surely they would have a lot of catching up to do. But that is a story that will be left to another chapter. I’m sorry if I bombarded you with lots of lore in this one, but in order for you to understand all the plotline this little personal arc will unfold, I had to try and situate you the best I could in the settings of this little planet called Deidoro and regarding its very peculiar folk. Keep tuned for the next chapter!
