“Go!”
On cue, the two soldiers began to duel, with the teal snake-like man kicking his right foot up, blasting a ki blast toward his opponent. The opponent, a humanoid alien with a blue handlebar mustache, crossing his arms forward, as a typical defense, and then charged forward. The rather larger combatant attempting to drive his fist into the gut of the contrastingly slender snake.
However, the latter easily caught the muscle man’s fist with both his palms, and then attempted to perform an uppercut with his foot. However, the blue-haired man grabbed the snake’s ankle with his offhand.
It seemed as if the two of them were locked together. However, in a daring move, the snake blasted a large concentration of Ki at point-blank range. This attack didn’t seem to hurt the man much, however, merely forcing him to retain to his defensive position as the force slid him back.
A dull applause from Captain Nudal caused the two of them to fall in attention.
“Good!” praised Nudal, “But not good enough!” The commander walked between them. “You both allowed yourself to be locked. Had your enemy been a measly two thousand levels over your power, you would’ve been snapped like a twig!”
The doors hissed open, with the tall figure that was Polar entering the room. He didn’t stop to look at the grunts, who seemed rather surprised by Polar’s sudden arrival. Rather, he glanced at Nudal and took his place across from him, crossing his arms.
“Lance Corporal.” Nudal nodded, though seemed disinterested.
“Polar will do,” corrected Polar.
“Of course…Polar. Have you come to observe?”
The Arcosian glanced about, finally taking note of the surprise of the soldiers. Apparently he was well-known; not that he particularly cared for it.
“If you don’t mind.”
“If you must…”
The Arcosian sat there with his arms crossed, as soldier after soldier went forward to fight one another. A good while passed as this went on. Some did well. Some were completely pathetic. According to the captain’s scouter readings, very few of them were above five thousand in their power level. The highest in the room was Captain Nudal himself, who boasted a power level of six thousand and five hundred.
The last two ended their duel briefly, with a blue-skinned humanoid facing off against a rather large brute with pale skin and an orange Mohawk. The former seemed to be shaking in his boots, fearful of the prospect of facing this brawny figure. As soon as Nudal brought his hand down to commence the duel, the red-haired man charged, causing the blue-skinned alien to fly back from the force of the kick.
It was an instant K.O., even leaving the armor shattered.
“Excellent work, Seng!” cheered Nudal to the victor, “THIS is what a model soldier looks like!”
The captain grinned and turned away, and gave a dismissive wave.
“That one.”
Nudal stopped in his path, glancing out of the corner of his eye to Polar, who pointed toward Seng.
“Polar?”
“I’d like to duel that one, Captain.”
The Captain seemed surprised at this prospect, and glanced at Polar quizzically. Polar was an even three thousand, two hundred and ninety power level, of course, well above the common grunt, but still below the elite Seng, who boasted five thousand levels of power.
“I need to be prepared to face a warrior that exceeds my own strength. It will be those battles that matter in the coming days.”
The captain nodded obediently, and turned to Seng. “You’re up, then.”
“Finally!” roared the vicious alien, “A real challenge!”
Polar and Seng took the center stage in the room. For a moment, there was pure silence, like a true Mexican standoff. Seng, predictably, made the first move.
The muscular man lunged forward, throwing a punch in Polar’s direction. The Arcosian, in defense, raised his forward. On collision, this caused a shockwave, sending Polar flying back.
This clearly wouldn’t be an easy fight.
The large alien’s hand was lit aflame. As if grasping the flame itself, Seng tossed the Shine Shot in Polar’s direction. Luckily, Polar dodged this attack, bolting up toward the ceiling. The Arcosian then blasted the two familiar magenta beams from his eye sockets toward Seng. However, much to Polar’s chagrin, the muscle man almost effortlessly deflected it with the palm of his hand.
Seng leaped into the air, flying toward Polar feet-first like a speeding bullet. The red-haired alien smashed into his foe’s chest, smashing him into the wall. Polar screeched in pain, the attack devastating him.
He dropped onto the ground, with Nudal’s right hand slowly following, standing before the fallen Arcosian. Polar was barely holding out, being held up by his knees and one hand, with the other over the spot where Seng struck him. He glanced up at the man, who bore a sly grin. Clearly, he had malicious intents.
“ENERGY CANNON!” cried Seng, firing a yellow energy beam from his mouth.
Polar sat up, and extended his own hand, firing a Death Beam in retaliation. The energy clashed halfway, with both of them initially at equal ground. However, Seng had the edge, due to Polar’s weakened state.
Cleverly enough, Polar took advantage of this relative stall, dashing up into the air. The Energy Cannon blasted the spot where Polar had been sitting, and it surely would’ve disintegrated him had he not moved.
Is he trying to kill me? Polar wondered in distress.
For the moment, Seng seemed confused. Polar wasted no time, descending behind Seng’s back and elbowing him as hard as he could in the base of the spine. This gesture went a long way, stunning him for the moment. Polar continued his relentless assault, wrapping his tail around Seng’s throat and spinning him about. Finally, he tossed the vicious monster into a group of grunts.
Strike!
Polar panted. The attack wore him out, considering how heavy Seng was. And in the current state he was, his strength was scarce.
In his familiar gesture, Nudal offered a polite clap which signaled the duel’s end. He chuckled, as if totally amused by the display before him.
“Marvelous!” the Captain cheered, “No one’s ever been able to give Seng a run for his money.”
Polar’s eyes strayed back over to where he tossed Seng, and then, totally focused, his eyes widened. Seng seemed barely effected by the attack. Had his efforts truly been for nothing?
Returning his gaze forward, the Arcosian then noticed Nudal was right in front of him, with a hand extended.
“I can’t say I didn’t expect it,” Nudal said, “The Arcosians are famed as legendary warriors. Still, it’s nice to see it up close. I can see why Lord Taiga brought you here. You have my respect, at least.”
Polar glanced down at Nudal’s hand, and grasped it firmly. He returned his gaze to the captain’s eyes, who seemed to possess a proud twinkle.
“Now then,” continued Nudal, “You should get to the med bay, corporal. Seems like you took quite the beating.”
Nudal chuckled, patting Polar on the shoulder. Polar frowned at this, but did as the Captain said, leaving him to continue training with his troops.
Despite his broody attitude, Polar did appreciate the opportunity of training with the soldiers. Those were his comrades, after all. And he would surely need to learn how to fight in the coming days, in preparation for the epic battle…
