Alright folks. I feel this has been discussed enough, so I'm going to throw up a poll for it. Discussion hereSo what are palaces you may ask? Well, basically they are buildings that allow you to create your own special! This will give some of the larger Power Level people to work for in order for the smaller guys to catch up!
Price Options:
1. Palaces are the same price as an academy. 25k Zeni 2. Palaces are more than the academy. Due to the fact that you aren't obligated to teach your special you have less responsibility as someone from the academy would have. Therefore, since you have to do less, the price is higher than that of the academy. 30k Zeni 3. Same as the above, but with a steeper price. 35k Zeni 4. No, you don't want any palaces. Vote up above on the poll. If any admin wants to edit this post and make the options more clear, go ahead.

I can't help but feel a lot of people are just voting for the 30k option for reasons of personal gain rather than balance.
A palace is a totally obligation-free special technique-giver, with no requirement to train students - and if you should decide to train somebody, there is no need for the Gi system to come into play. These are significant advantages over the Academy, and therefore I feel its cost should be significantly higher than that of the Academy.
With only 5k difference, who would ever buy an Academy? The palace would only be a little more costly at 30k, and offer much greater freedom.

I voted for 30k because I don't think the obligation to teach people is a downside - I actually think it is a bonus (because it encourages people to care about and seek out your character for non-violent RP, even). I can see that it is worth a small discount because it generates more RP for the site, but I think it'll already take about an extra 2-3 days to buy a palace over an academy, and I think boosting that to an extra week or more is... not really worth it.
Either way, it won't benefit me personally because I intend to buy an academy rather than a palace for the reasons above!

Personally i want it to be lower, like no prior buildings but still 30k. Teaching your special move to someone is a bonus, plus your other 2/3 moves! Plus, the dojo master gets zeni for everyone he trains, the palace owner doesn't. Short post because of phone

NONE of these options are more then an academy, unless you are implying that these have to work the same way and you have to upgrade a level 3 house or dojo, like an academy, for palaces.

Kaula actually begins to raise a very good point. We haven't really discussed the mechanics of exactly what palaces DO. Perhaps this vote should be tabled for now until we have decided that.

That IS a good point. I just assumed you needed a level 3 house in the same way you do a Academy- I thought we were voting on the proposal that a Palace would work the exact same way as an Academy but with no obligation to train anybody ever. That may be a flawed assumption. Also, hypothetically, could you have both? If you feel like writing nothing but zeni threads forever?

I've been discussing with a few others a little, and I think that we can allow them to have both, but not gain an additional Special (which is again going to be unpopular because most people here don't give a crap about balance).
Specials are game-changers. Most canon characters didn't even have ONE move that would qualify, let alone multiple moves.

To be totally honest, I have no idea what my 'special' will even do when I get to the Academy, and if there were an option to buy an academy that let you teach 3 normal moves to other people without using their tech slots, for cheaper than the special-teaching version, I'd probably go with that personally. I want the cool RP aspect of being a 'teacher' much more than I want the trump card the special represents.
I'm not sure I understand the point of having both without an extra special, though? I thought that was all the Palace provided so what would you actually get otherwise?
It does seem like there's still a few questions about how things would work which it'd be worthwhile to hammer out before coming to a final decision...

My point is there would be no point in having both, except to screw over people trying to squeeze every possible advantage out of the system, which I personally am all for Joking aside, I maintain that we do not allow people to have more than one custom special. they may LEARN additional specials from others, but not create more than one of their own.

Oh yeah, okay. I'm down with that.
I feel like creating a special is really making a 'mark' in the game universe for your character, and I don't think anyone should be able to do that more than once myself.
I'm not even sure I agree about being able to learn more than one. I like the idea that you have to make that choice, IC, with the 'special' technique requiring such focus that if you want to change Schools and learn a whole new one, you can no longer use the old one.
But I can see why that would be unpopular. Maybe even against canon if we assume that the Spirit Bomb is the 'special' of King Kai's school.

Palaces should be 1 Special per-buyer. Specials are very very powerful, and if a person was able to make their entire combat repertoire a bunch of Specials (through shared learning of multiple Palaces, for instance), that person would be unbeatable in a 1v1 against a near-peer. For anyone wondering, a discussion was here: wodsouls.freeforums.net/thread/3333/palaces-specials-lonersWhere I kind of disagree with Bao, is that Palace-learned Specials are that they don't need to be taught, but can be. No one will want to ever buy an Academy if they don't have to be bothered to teach someone, but can if they want to. If you make a Palace, you're not a sensei but some kind of big shot, so why would you be teaching people your moves? On a related note, I think we need a 1 custom Special per-person, and perhaps a hard cap on total Specials.

I would also like to suggest an alternative, of investing numerous tech slots to get a special (after discussion I'm not sure of this option, but I would like further discussion). and there's still lots of Palace stuff that needs to be sorted out beyond meagre pricing (35k would get my vote).

It kinda sounds like a good time to make a call on specials per character as well.
I thought about it some more and I don't think Goku ever uses Kienzan (which is the Turtle School Special) and I struggle to think of anyone who does seem to have more than one special canonically soooo... I think I'd like it to be a one-per-character super-important-focus thing myself.
But maybe that's worth a second thread? I dunno.
