"This is Cipher 24, reaching the target point."
Cipher stopped in mid air, looking down at the expanse of desert beneath him. It wasn't a particularly dangerous mission. The Big Blu's sensors had detected traces of magical energy in this area. As well as defending the planet, another goal of the Blue Banner Army was to collect magical artifacts from around the world, if only to ensure that nobody used them for evil. And so here Cipher was, sent to investigate and collect the source of magic. The trace was small though, making it hard to pinpoint an exact location, leading Cipher here.
The place was covered with sand, as to be expected from a desert, but in the sand Cipher could see traces of ruins. There was probably a big city here once upon a time, now lost to time and buried beneath the desert. It made sense that a magical artifact would be buried here as well.
Without a word, Cipher activated his internal scanners, hoping to find the source of the magic now that he was closer. A small smile appeared on his face when a more definite signal appeared in his vision. But he noticed something else. Directly beneath him was a massive opening, underneath the sand. If the artifact was anywhere, it would have to be in there. Now there was the matter of getting down there.
Taking careful aim, as to cause the least damage, he held his hands out, pale green energy forming. "Pale lance." The beam shot into the sand, and it wasn't long before he saw the sand shift, beginning to fall through the newly formed hole. A couple more shots and the hole was now wide enough for Cipher to slip through. Closing his mouth tight to avoid accidentally swallowing any sand, he allowed himself to sink through the sand into the darkness below.
What he saw when he opened his eyes amazed him. The chamber was enormous, and rather ornately decorated. Though the lack of light made it hard to see the details, Cipher could definitely see what dominated the center of the chamber.
It was massive, a colossal golden statue. It looked like a man from the waist up, only with four arms instead of two. The way it was designed and formed, it almost looked like a massive suit of armour, rather than a proper depiction of a man.
Cipher could only float there for a moment, staring at it. The man whom he once was, Anthony Harken, had possessed a great appreciation for beauty, and that appreciation had passed onto Cipher. He remained quiet for a moment, before remembering why he was here.
"Cipher 24 to Big Blu, do you copy?" However, the only response was loud static. Was there something in the walls preventing his signal from getting through? He was about to try again, when a loud sound gave him pause.
The sound of metal grinding on metal.
Cipher's gaze slowly turned to the statue, which, mauch to his amazement, had now begun to move. It seemed this statue wasn't a statue at all, but rather some kind of gigantic robot. And Cipher's voice had apparently woken it up. The colossus' head slowly turned, empty eyes looking at Cipher for a brief, silent moment.
And then it struck. It brought a massive fist back, swinging at the smaller android with surprising speed. Cipher was barely able to dodge the enormous fist as it crashed into the wall behind him.
Only for another of the giant's fists to strike him instead.
Cipher was slammed into the wall, the android's own strength barely able to keep the giant fist from crushing him. The golden fist was about as big as he was, and was definitely powerful. In the back of his mind, Cipher had to give credit to whoever constructed this massive masterpiece.
As he tried to force the fist back, Cipher noticed something about the statue's arm. Now that it was fully extended, he could see something glowing in its elbow. A glowing red orb, just bigger than Cipher's own fist. Was that thing powering it? Most likely it was what allowed the statue to control the limb.
The statue suddenly pulled back, only to bring another fist flying towards him. Cipher moved quickly, narrowly avoiding the shot as he dove for the arm's now exposed core. The colossus barely had time to react before Cipher delivered a sharp blow to the orb. Surprisingly, the orb was knocked from its place, and he watched as the entire arm, now disconnected from the body, fell to the floor with a loud crash.
This shouldn't be too hard. Just take off the arms and it shouldn't be able to attack. After all, the colossus didn't show any other forms of combat apart from its massive fists.
And Cipher would learn that was all it needed.
The Colossus seemed to pause for a moment, the severed arm suddenly twitching. Cipher could see a red glow buried within the statue's chest, as its arm slowly began to levitate, effortlessly slipping itself back into place.
It can self repair...
Cipher stared in amazement, only snapping out of it to avoid another brutal punch from the giant. This was amazing! A powerful, fast, seemingly intelligent construct capable of repairing itself. Not even the BBA had such technology! Though this meant that the only way of defeating the giant was to completely destroy it.
And a part of Cipher simply couldn't let that happen. Despite the danger it posed to him, the colossus was beautiful. It would be a crime to destroy such brilliance. This only left the android with one choice.
Avoiding another fist, Cipher made a dash for the surface, flying up through the hole he had created. Thankfully the giant was rooted to the floor. It couldn't reach him up here. Once he was a safe distance, his communicator crackled to life.
"Big Blu to Cipher 24, we lost contact with you. Do you copy?"
"Cipher 24 to Big Blu, reading you loud and clear. I've located the artifact. It's located inside a gigantic..."
Cipher didn't get to finish as the ground rumbled. Suddenly, there was a massive explosion as a golden fist burst out from the ground. Cipher watched in horror as the colossus began to pull itself out from the ground. He could see where it had torn itself from its base. This giant just wasn't going to give up!
Turning its hollow gaze to the stunned android, the Colossus swung, slapping the android out of the air. Cipher hit the ground hard, stunned by the powerful blow. The Colossus wasted no time. With its four arms, it dragged its way towards Cipher, intent on finishing its target. Cipher shook his head, regaining its senses, only to see the golden giant towering over him.
The colossus brought its two upper arms up, before swinging them down like a hammer. Cipher let out a cry as the blow slammed him against the ground, almost crushing him. The sheer weight of the giant was proving too much. One fist was hard enough, but two of them were proving too strong for him.
Cipher pushed back with all his might, barely able to avoid being crushed to death. This time he was fighting the colossus' entire weight.
This is going to hurt in the morning...but...
Cipher could feel his system's going into overdrive. His green eyes glowed as newfound strength shot through his limbs. With a low growl, he began to push the giant's arms back, standing himself upright. His eyes stared up at the giant's empty sockets. How was he going to do this? He couldn't keep this up, and any damage he didn't to the giant would instantly repair.
Then he remembered. The glow in the colossus' chest.
It's main core!
With a burst of strength, Cipher pushed the fists off of him, able to slip out as they crashed into the sand. The small android darted straight for the colossus' chest, giving it no time to recover. With as much speed as he could, he rained blow after blow on the giant's chest, watching the metal dent and finally break away.
And there it was, another red orb, slightly larger than the others, glowing brightly, providing power for the colossus.
This is my chance.
As the colossus reached in to grab him, Cipher reached in and grabbed hold of the core. Energy surged through him as Cipher pulled hard, the orb resisting him. Throwing all his might into it, Cipher let out a loud roar as he tore the core from its place, falling back onto the sand below.
The Colossus was still form a moment, then with a loud groan, it began to collapse. Cipher managed to fly out of the way as golden metal rained down onto the sand, sending it flying everywhere. Cipher watched as the giant fell, and then was still.
Panting heavily, Cipher felt his system's slowing down, returning to normal parameters. He looked at the glowing red orb in his hands. It was amazing something so small could power something that large.
"Big Blu to Cipher 24, do you copy? What's going on?"
Cipher remained quiet for a moment before responding.
"This is Cipher 24. I've retrieved the artifact. It was being used to power a colossus. The colossus has been defeated."
"Understood. Do you need any assistance?"
The android nodded, despite the fact that they couldn't see him.
"There are four lesser cores in its arms that can be collected. Also, if you may, send a team down to retrieve the colossus' body. It would be a shame to leave it here like this."
"Understood. We'll be there shortly."
Cipher cut off the communication as he looked down at the fallen colossus. Even though it was now lifeless, Cipher didn't want such beauty to go to waste. Not after it had been trapped underground for so long.
