What role should the chatbox play on the site? Is it the ideal place for members to be debating issues of stats and such? I honestly don't think that it is. Their is only one current rule about the chat box.
5) Bad behavior in the c-box will not be tolerated - treat it as an extension of the site.
This means that anything, including arguments and debates are just as fine in the chat box as they are in the appropriate forums.
What should change? Ban or at least restrict debates within the chat box altogether. It should be a place where the community can socialize with one another in order to... well... build a sense of community.
Why should it change? Live action debates are more likely to go volatile because it is so easy to type and send a few words, but not so easy to take it back. The C-box rarely seems like a place where people are thinking critically before they post. Members are getting upset with one another, almost entirely over completely fictional things that are getting blown out of proportion.
The first place a guest is going to look is the chat box, it is the easiest way to see if the community is active and what they are like. They also visit to ask questions because they are still on the fence about whether or not they would like to join. Seeing a debate that they have no context to is often a big turn off for a guest.

This issue won't have a vote from me this time, as I'm on the fence with both ideas. Yes, it's nice to debate plots and socialize, and yes, it's alright to debate certain things, so long as you put your thoughts out in an organized manner, so it doesn't explode outwards... At the same time, there seem to be a few too many instances, concerning arguments developing into claws and teeth baring at each other, so I wanna say no to leaving it as open as it had been... My thought would be for us to just make use of the suggestion area so we can actually think and talk about the subjects critically, if it gets confusing in the cbox, but that requires one of the parties stop and say, "Wait wait wait... Lets take this into a thread and debate it there. This way, we can look back and get our information straight, as well as seeing if you and I agree or if someone else has an opinion on the matter that is, perhaps, different than our idea and we can see what the site thinks of our respective ideas by putting it into vote after we present our ideas and how'd they'd work mechanically."
Bleh... That was a mouthful, but I think you get the point I'm making.
