Whatever happened with this suggestion? Was it tabled or tossed out all together? Because it looks very appealing in light of talks on the Cbox.
Edit:
I think Vi-Poi's suggestion is exactly what is needing because it would incentiveize spending skill slots for variants, making them actually useful, while keeping MP3 as the true 'ultra attack' it's meant to be.
With MP3 keeping its ability to deal substantial amounts of damage, while also giving people a REASON to use variants — outside of purely cosmetic reasons. Not to mention making battles far more entertaining and varied instead of : N1, TANK, MP3, CLASH / BARRIER. (Note I'm not saying all of them are like this, I'm simply saying that in general those are — by FAR — the most used skills. It's like when you play a fighting game or an MMO and you are flooded with options of attacks and combos, but only one or two of them are actually useful.

I've been thinking about the Variants as of lately, and I came to the conclusion that most people would do the complete opposite of what you'd normally expect them to do in some cases. Like instead of guarding, they'd dodge a Variant with Piercing in its description (granted something akin to the Kienzan is an obvious loud siren call that tells you to get the hell out of dodge), and instead of dodging, they'd guard against something that has a Homing Variant to it. I also wondered about how useful Piercing could be in most situations, which those situations being that someone DIDN'T have a sure way to mechanically dodge without pulling in some power gaming (perhaps not using that term correctly here...) and or didn't have an Afterimage like technique to escape the blast. So as far as I thought about it, a Piercing Variant will only work when dealing with the Sustainable Barrier Variant, as you'd either need to meet/exceed the Barrier's PL to get through it or just break through it with a V2 or UV3 Piercing Technique. Homing Variant, of course, doesn't need much to be talked about (imo) as it has its uses, and can mechanically work to your advantage SHOULD it be used correctly. For example, Zucceta's match against Bing where (with the use of Ki Charge mind you) she pulled a victory by using a Homing technique. These are just my thoughts on the matter, you're free to agree or disagree or post a counterargument, just wanted to give my two cents o/.

The worst variant by and large is dots imo. In most MMO games, dots deal more damage than similar abilities (because the dot takes time to deal its damage). Here dots do less damage and I can't think of anything in particular that they would be useful for where simply spamming a couple smaller moves would work and cost less.
