The time had come. Weeks of preparation and digging had all culminated to this final day. It was finally time for them to try the most daring thing possible in Knutts.
They were going to escape.
The hole in the wall that lead to the hanger had finally punch through to the other side, dumping them out right behind a large stack of crates, working as a makeshift cover for their tunnel. As an extra precaution, they had placed a sheet the same shade of gray as the wall over the hole. From a distance, it looked no different than the rest of the wall. No one would suspect anything so long as they didn’t get too close. Shortly after their tunnel was finished, Freeze managed to procure passcodes to three ships, securing their getaway rides. All that was left was for them to make their move and bust out.
“We could tried subduing a few guards and stealing their uniforms,” Frieda suggested. A murmur of discussion went up around the table for a moment, with Articho ultimately shaking his head.
“A decent idea, but we’d have nowhere to put the bodies and I won’t resort to killing them to keep them from getting back up,” the hybrid said. The others quietly agreed.
“I can try to get us some guard uniform,” Freeze said. “I know a guy who does the laundry for them.”
“I think the guards know our faces well enough now,” Articho countered. “We did stop a few riots and had a lot of clashes with other gangs.” Another murmur of agreement went around the table. Silence rose up between them as the group thought about ways they could stage their escape. It was broken when Kadab finally spoke up.
“What if we started a riot, instead?” the Zoon-seijin suggested. The others stared at him for a moment, then Cacan began slowly nodding.
“That could actually work. We make people start rioting, get the guards attention away from the Q Docks, and slip out in the chaos,” he said, excitement growing in his voice. The Konatsian gave Kadab an approving slap on the back. “Good thinking there. I knew there was something in that big head of yours.”
Kadab smiled, his chest puffing with pride. It wasn’t often that any of the brothers were commended for good ideas or thinking. They were usually the muscle of the group if one didn’t count Articho himself. Alaka and Ab gave their brother a thumbs up as Articho pounded his fist on the table. There was a fire in his eyes and a confident grin on his face.
“What are we waiting for then, boys?” he said, looking them all in the eyes. He saw his grin reflected on each of their faces.
“Let’s start a riot.”

The day had been fairly quiet at Knutts. A few fights here and there, but nothing more. It seemed everyone wanted to keep their heads down for the day. The headless bodies of a few prisoners who had died in the previous day’s riot seemed to lend to that behavior. No one wanted to end up like them.
Too bad a calm environment didn’t lend well to Articho’s escape plan.
A ki blast hit one prisoner, a Zoonamite, in the face, knocking him off his feet. He quickly scrambled back up and looked furiously in the direction of the blast. Another bewildered looking prisoner, this time a Kabochan was standing there, looking around in confusion. The first prisoner didn’t care, though, assuming that the second had been the one to hit him. The Zoonamite charged at the Kabochan and punched him in the face, making the Kabochan stumble back. His confusion was replaced with anger and he swung back. The Zoonamite dipped out of the way and the Kabochan’s fist connected the the back of a Brenchian’s skull. The fighting kept slowly expanding from three to six to twelve to twenty four, yet many stayed out of its way. Freeze, the actual thrower of the ki blast, signaled to Articho from his position against a wall.
“You’re up, Cacan,” the hybrid said quietly. The Konatsian dashed out into the fighting crowd and disappeared amongst its many faces. The only noise that could be heard was the fighting for a while, before a loud shout rang out in the crowd.
“Fuck the Warden!” said a booming voice, followed by a large blast aimed at the clear wall separating the guards from the Polestar. It bounced off harmlessly, but it garnered a response from the guards.
“Keep the fightin’ to yourselves, scumbags,” a voice over the intercom said. That was the trigger they needed. The fighting amongst the prisoners stopped and the rioting started. Everyone came off the walls and began ripping the prison apart. Shouting and explosions began rocking the Polestar and the guards began rushing to try and quell the prisoners.
Articho turned and walked back into their shack, soon joined by the rest of his gang. They had their distraction and without protection, the shack wouldn’t last very long. The hybrid tore down the poster on the wall, exposing their tunnel. An explosion rocked the shack and knocked a piece of their roof off. “Let’s move!” the hybrid ordered, dashing into the tunnel. The others followed after him as the remainder of their shack exploded into pieces and blocked off their tunnel.
Articho ran down the long tunnel, the grayish light on the other end growing larger and larger. He burst through the sheet, ripping it straight off the wall and fluttering to the ground. The hybrid crashed straight through the boxes in front of their hole and sent them flying in different directions. To his surprise, however, the Warden was standing on the other side a few feet away.
“Thought you could esca-,“ the large man started as Articho continued his dash forward. Finishing his sentence became quite hard for the Warden when the smaller hybrid’s knee smashed into his face. Deez grunted in pain and stumbled back, leaving the path towards the ship open to them. They split off into three groups: Cacan, Freida, and Freeze going to one ship, Alaka, Kadab, and Ab going to another, and Articho taking the third. The hybrid punched in the code to open the door and dashed into the cockpit. He punched the code in again, slamming his fist down on the buttons to get the ship fired up and ready to take off.
That’s when the bay doors began to close.
“Shit!” Articho cursed before vaulting over his seat to exit the ship. He opened the door and looked to the control panel for the bay. He saw Alaka standing at the panel and giving Articho a thumbs up before looking down to the floor of the hanger. Worry crossed the hybrid’s face as he followed Alaka’s gaze to see Kadab and Ab fighting the Warden. From the looks of it, it was all the brothers could do to keep him busy.
“Get out of here, boss,” Alaka shouted, drawing Articho’s attention again. “Us three ain’t leaving each other, but you’re gettin’ out of here.”
“But you’ll die! They’ll execute you!” he protested.
“At least we’re dyin’ together! That’s how we’ve always done it! But you’re not dyin’ with us, boss!” Alaka replied. The Zoon-seijin pushed a button on the panel and the bay doors began to open up again before Alaka blasted the control panel, destroying it and locking the door in place. He jumped off of the catwalk and joined the fight with his brothers, shouting “Go!” one last time.
Articho hesitated for a moment until he heard the other three members of his group taking off and leaving. He ran back into the cockpit, pressed the button to make the ship take off, and pushed the throttle forward. The ship left the bay and took off into space with a course charted straight for Earth. Tears ran down the young hybrid’s face as a mixture of emotions ran through him. He was going to miss the friends he’d made in Knutts and he felt sorrow at Ab, Kadab, and Alaka’s sacrifice.
But most of all, he was happy to be headed home.
