The morning sun filtered through the treetops and the forest birds were out in force, singing their merry songs and flitting from branch to branch. Suddenly, the sound of tiny footfalls echoed through the otherwise peaceful wood, and a small, white-clad figure hauled itself up over a ledge. Black juice dribbled down Holo's chin as he popped another wild blackberry into his mouth, and he stared vacantly up at the birds rambling about in the branches. He was suddenly taken by the urge to climb a tree. Shoving the blackberries cupped in his hand into the back pocket of his white trousers, (which were looking a little dirty already) and set to the task of hauling himself up the trunk of the nearest tree. He had barely gotten started up the tree when he lost his grip and tumbled back down to the forest floor below, landing roughly on his butt. He could feel the smashed berries staining the seat of his pants before he even checked, and let out a little cry of frustration. "I didn't want to climb you anyway, tree!" he muttered, still trying to extract the mushed mess from his pocket before it did any more damage. As he turned to leave, almost as an afterthought, Holo reached out with his energy and lashed out at the trunk of the tree. His ears were greeted with the sound of splintering wood as the force of his ki pushed the tree into an untenable position, and he stuck his tongue out at it bitterly as he watched it crash down to the forest floor, startling all the birds away and leaving the area eerily silent. As Holo took in the silence he began to feel a pang of guilt for disturbing the peace of the forest, but turned and kept walking anyway.
Holo, still a bit peeved by the berry incident, almost didn't notice when the forest abruptly ended in front of him. He was greeted by the sight of smooth asphalt, and he knew at once what he had stumbled upon. "A road! Magnificent!" Holo promptly sat down and slid down the slope leading to the road, coming to rest only a few feet from its smooth, black surface. He was understandably surprised when a car hurtled past him at great speed so close by. He quickly scrambled back away from the road, but after getting over the initial panic, he beamed a great smile, and with a twinkle in his eye exclaimed "That was amazing!". He sat down and watched the cars fly past for almost an hour before the novelty wore off, and he decided to see where the road lead to. Holo strolled along aside the road, trying to sense the people in the cars before they drove past him to kill time.
Holo was beginning to think that the road went on forever. He had been walking for hours, and yet he didn't seem to be any closer to wherever it went. He was considering just giving up and going home, when he rounded a corner and sighted the city. Buildings larger than he had ever seen rose from the landscape like towering concrete titans. The shining lights of the storefronts and the cars bustling about the busy streets drew his stares, and his face beamed with pure wonder and excitement as he wandered the streets, taking in the sights. He passed shops and stores of all kinds, selling things he had never seen before. Of course, he didn't have any money, but...
"Hey... you! Kid!" exclaimed a rough and moderately slurred voice coming from behind him, and as Holo turned to look it continued, saying something unintelligible in between swigs from a mostly-empty bottle. Holo jumped in fright as the bottle suddenly sailed through the air, smashing to pieces against a wall only a foot from his head. Holo, reacting to the threat without thinking, reached out with his energy and gave the fellow a gentle shove through a storefront window. As the glass pane exploded and the little cutting shards rained on the immediate area, Holo recalled something that Dr. Remus had once told him. Remember my creation, people are dangerous. If they think for one moment that you aren't just like them, they will try to kill you. So stay away at all costs, you hear me? Under no circumstances can you allow anyone to know what you are. Remus' dark words played over and over in Holo's mind as he watched the crowd gather around the fallen drunk, and he suddenly grew so panicked that he didn't notice that the crowd wasn't even looking at him. His heartbeat in his ears, Holo turned and bolted down the street, and as he approached a turn into an alley he took it, trying to shake off his imagined pursuers. He emerged from the alleyway only to run out into the road, where he was suddenly aware of a pair of headlights rapidly approaching him, accompanied by the unearthly screeching of the brakes. It was a case of too little too late, however, as the car slammed into Holo full on, throwing him several meters across the asphalt. His head was still swimming as he eventually skidded, face-down, to a stop, and dimly processed the sounds of voices coming from the car. Moments later, his mind began to clear, and he rolled over onto his back, where he was greeted by the sight of two faces, leering down at him and looking monstrous in the bright back-lighting of the car's headlights. Startled, Holo cried out and released a pulse of energy, sending the two shapes up into the air, one slamming into a wall and coming to rest slumped over against it. The other went straight through the windshield of the car, and accompanied by the crashing of safety glass Holo leapt up and continued his flight (Metaphorical flight, he can't actually fly.) down the street.
