Time was meant to heal all things; pain, misery, and of course – wounds. It was unfortunate that Zerori needed more than time the necessary to heal her wounds since the incident in Satan City. It was supposed to be a day to relax and let her mind unwind, but instead it turned into her running from the law because she didn’t want to keep her mouth shut to a xenophobic officer. One thing led to another and she found herself not enjoying an intimate encounter with a blade in her belly. The saiyan woman whom got entangled in this – by chasing her for an insult – was a woman named Tomare and the man whom felt it is his duty to attack Zerori was named Jarvis.
Both of them seemed like a match made out of heaven but she knew they’d run into problem simply on the basis that she was too naïve and he was a loaded gun ready to go off.
Stopping her flight in mid-step, she stood atop a stone structure that was little more than rubble. She was very close to her destination right now, intent to find Ari and collect her belongings from the makeshift camp she’d jimmied up. However, she needed to catch a breath or two first. Bringing a hand to her stomach, she winced – it wasn’t completely healed yet but she didn’t have time to hang around for the skin to regain it’s luster and shine.
Looking around her, she took in the sights of the village that Ari must have come from. All of the people, she assumed, were killed off in some sort of disaster so the young girl was left here by herself. Zerori had thought about taking Ari with her on her travels but the wound on her stomach seemed to prove to her that that was a terrible idea in the end. She wouldn’t survive a single encounter should I face an enemy… and if they seem to think that she’s my weakness-? With a soft frown, she shook her head. Thinking of something so depressing would not do with what she had in mind.
“Alright…” She breathed in and jumped into another gusting step. Within a few more moments, she appeared once more just before the brush and bamboo-tied entrance of her little abode. Tilting her head at its disheveled appearance (or more disheveled) it occurred to her that the storms must have broken some of it down. Walking forward, she moved the leaves away from the entrance and screwed her face up at what lay before her.
Piece of leaf and wood were splintered and various equipment had fallen to the floor (some breaking on impact) while other were simply covered in a layer of dirt and water. “Damn it, how strong a storm came through here…?” She hissed, leaning down to pick up something off the ground to start cleaning. After a good thirty minutes of arranging her belongings, throwing shit that was too broken to be saved out, and finally putting what she could take with her away in a satchel over her shoulder – she was ready to head out and find another place to roost.
For a moment, the thought occurred to her to perhaps try and make amends with the humans of this planet to make finding a place to live a little easier. It didn’t take much thinking to realize that it just wasn’t her style to bend to the will of those weaker than her unless they had a damn good reason. And the people of Earth didn’t see anything wrong with taking the appearance of her saiyan heritage and stamping a huge label that said ‘DANGEROUS’ for everyone to see.
With one last final glance at her previous abode, she took a few steps forward before leaning down to start a huge wind step.
“Zerori!” Came a cry and the saiyaness Halfling stopped her movement before turning to the voice.
“Ari? I didn’t think you’d be hanging around here…” She spoke, genuinely surprised to see the little girl after so long still sticking by her shack.
Running as fast as her little legs could take her, Ari stopped in front of the taller woman and leaned down to catch her breath with her hands on her knees. After a few amusing seconds of Zerori watching her wheeze like an overheated dog, the young girl looked up at her, “I’ve… been meaning to tell you something!”
“Oh, confessing your desire to worship me?” Zerori teased in a deadpanned voice, eliciting a pout from the girl.
“You’re not that great…”
“Aw…” She only felt a little disappointed at that, hiding behind an overly dramatic gesture like she was wiping away a tear. “-And I tried so hard.”
“Listen!” Ari cried, no longer fatigued and grabbing onto the woman’s waist in a beseeching manner. Caught off guard, Zerori’s eyes widened and she looked down at the girl with a raised eye brow and a slightly worried expression.
“W-What-?”
“The things we found down there aren’t down there anymore!” She told her and it felt like the blood drained from Zerori’s face. The beings that Ari spoke of were the dark denizens of the ruins that she and her had cracked open to search for loot. It turned out, deep in the ruins there was a city that was lost to the passing ages – filled with technology not from this world. When they met a dark being that seemed to feast upon them by devouring them in darkness, she had barely escaped to survive and tell about it.
And here she was saying that they actually left that place and walking the world of light? It must have been at night – there’s no way they could have survived the light and not be disoriented as hell. Diverting her attention back to Ari, she knelt down to her. “How long has it been since you found this out? And how did you find this out?”
“Ah! W-Well… I thought I sh-should… check it out again.”
“You went back inside?!” Zerori yelled, angry and impressed the girl had even tried that on her own. “You could have been killed and that would have been a waste of me even saving your sorry ass!”
Ari’s face change and she yelled back, offended, “I recall saving you as well! If it weren’t for me, you would have been eaten!” The saiyaness choked on that and turned away at the mention of her rescue. She hoped that Ari would think Zerori just figure out how to escape the beast and that she wasn’t following the girls voice. “So don’t say something like that! It’s just… mean!” Her voice had started to break up and the saiyaness glanced down at her from the corner of her eye to see her nearly ready to burst into tears.
No, I am not having this! Looking back at Ari, Zerori reached for the girls’ head and held it firmly as she leaned down and glared into her eyes, “Don’t. Cry.” She commanded and watched girls’ face contort to fear before she tried to stifle her sobs. With a twitch of her lips, Zerori leaned back and tried to ruffle the girls’ hair, “I’m mad ‘cuz you’re stupid,” she started, not relinquishing her glare on the girl, “We escaped that together and you intentionally went back in to certain death. If I didn’t think that was the most foolish move ever, I’d be impressed – and I kind of am.”
As she said all of this, Ari tears gradually faded and she just started at Zerori. Even if her words got the job done, it made her very uncomfortable to say such things. Giving compliments to a kid as she cried gave her the feeling she was just saying anything to make her stop – even if she meant it.
“S-So, you’re-?” She seemed to ask tentatively.
Zerori finished it for her with a roll of her eyes, “No, I’m not mad – well, not super mad anyway,” She chuckled, “Just… know your limits, a’ight? Not everyday you get to be protected by one of the strongest beings in the universe, y’know?” She jested with a grin and ruffled the girls’ hair in earnest before turning back around. She needed to think about how to approach this, but without knowing what she could do – it really left her at odds. Ideally, and she’d just convinced herself that it was a terrible idea, she’d like to take Ari with her to keep her out of trouble. How would that make sense, though – taking her from a dangerous situation so she can follow me into more (possibly worse) fatal encounters?
So deep in thought, she didn’t realize that her scouter was turning on and off – like it was malfunctioning. When it finally turned on and stayed on, a voice started yelling over the feed like a person yelling through a cell phone. Ari looked at Zerori’s satchel curiously before poking the thinking woman. Roused from her scheming, Zerori looked down at the girl before looking at her satchel and realizing someone was contacting her.
When she reached for it and placed it over her face, a look of disgust immediately washed over her features, “Denizen-!”
”About damn fucking time you answered, you little bi-!”
“Hey, shut it with the insults and just talk damn it!” She snarled softly and the man on the other side seemed to speak more offended before he spoke his piece. Ari, in the meantime, just stared at her as she conversed and Zerori made certain not to make eye contact with the young lass so she didn’t know how uncomfortable it made her.
”You wanted me to let ya know when yo investments were cashed, right?” He started, piquing her interest, ”Well, I found you somethin’ nice! Just off the end zone of the Sol System was a hunk of junk just floatin’ in space, right? Well, I had my scientist study it and sent some out there to pick it through-? Turns out this thing just pop out of a wormhole without a damn soul manning it!” When he was finished, Zerori could be seen with a very surprised expression on her face. ”When you’re ready to come get this sombitch, come to these coordinates! Told ya I’d treat you good and this is how ya thank me, eh?” When he seemed finished, Zerori could put a hand over her face with a soft laugh.
“Denizen… How can I make it up to you?” She was modulating her voice to hide the excitement she felt.
”Come at get this thing! I can’t have it takin’ up space with other MORE IMPORTANT projects to oversee!” He declared, and Zerori got the message loud and clear.
“Be there as soon as I can. And Denizen…?”
”What?” He barked.
“Thank you,” She said as sweet as she could possibly manage, prompting a response over the other side that sounded like he choked before he simply ended the feed right there. Perfect. She thought and looked down at the little girl and grinned at her. “Guess whose coming with me for a while?” She asked, leading up to Ari’s eyes widening before she jumped forward and hugged the saiyaness around the waist with a happy cry. “That’s right, but we have to leave now. Got everything you want to carry? I’m not coming back.”
At that, Ari pulled back and started to fumble around, asking about ‘this’ and ‘that’ and what she should bring before asking Zerori to take her to where she lived. Zerori shrugged and reached for the girl to throw her on her shoulders. The whole fiasco took all of about five minutes – which Zerori was grateful for since she was itching to see this new ship – and before the young girl knew it she was hoisted back onto Zerori’s shoulders and thrown into a wind step.
(Just inside of West City, outskirts of town)
After a constant travel time of twenty minutes, Zerori needed to rest badly. Two figures appeared out of the step and the larger one holding the smaller one felt to her knees before Ari was thrown to the ground as gently as possible for the other to land on her face in the dirt. The little girl struggles to get her land legs back and crawled over to the saiyaness woman, “Zerori! What happened?!” She cried, shaking her.
The large figure groaned and turned her head to rest her cheek on the dirt, speckles of the dust on her face, “I’m… drained, kid… Just give me a minute or two… and stop shaking me!” She growled and Ari stopped to just stare at the woman. She couldn’t comprehend what had happened but had nearly fallen asleep after the first five minutes of travel. She expected the ride to bumpy and jerky – like she was being thrown around from side to side – but Zerori kept her moment consistent through the entire flight.
Now the woman was exhausted and Ari could only sit next to her and look around at where they had stopped. Nothing she saw made sense to her and she stared starry-eyed at everything that seemed to move. Some people she’d never seen before were watching them with worried glances while others simply ignored what was happening. The city, for some reason, looked very bedraggled and blood was still be washed and cleaned from places. This caused Ari to whimper and grab onto Zerori’s arm in a bid to seek something protective to take comfort in.
With a groan, Zerori looked up to see what Ari was grabbing her for and instead found her self looking at what looked like the city recovering from another attack. What happened here – a war? Again?! Getting to her feet, she was approached by a few concerned people but simply brushed them off and walked into the city. She needed to rest a bit more but she could walk just fine. Beside her, Ari made certain to keep a hand clenched around her spandex pants at the hip. As they walked, Zerori would ask around to gather information on what happened.
Some provided just obscure information; that a hoard of monsters called vampyres had attacked the city lead by some queen. The queen was eaten by some sort of girl and the forces that protected the city had exterminated most of the threat. As she absorbed as much information as she could from the people, she could only wonder if this person – the Queen – was that Kiara girl? Sure, she talked a good game but did she really try and take over the town?
When she felt Ari tug on her again, she looked down and nodded, “Alright, I’m movin’…” She teased, before jumping into another wind step with a quick ‘Don’t let go’. In a few more moment, they reached the coordinates that the scouter prompted them to. In front of them stood a huge building that could damn near rival the Capsule Corp Mansion she’d been in. From the looks of the construction, Denizen was still working with the renovations. Figures! She thought with amusement and walked forward toward the entrance.
As expected, there were guards at the entrance that had the logo of their employer – a backwards ‘D’ with another ‘D’ in front of it in dark letters. As they approached, the guards made to step forward, “Identify your selves!” They demanded. Without missing a beat, Zerori stopped and simply gave a slight two-fingered salute.
“Red Doll.”
After a moment of stunned silence, one got on the walkie at their side and asked for confirmation. When a loud voice yelled on the other side of the communicator, the guard embarrassingly allowed her to pass. He gave the young girl at her side a glare before finding himself in the grip of the saiyaness herself and fanged snarl in his face. She released him – or rather, threw him to the ground – before entering the building.
Inside, it was very similar to Capsule Corp but everything was darkly shaded and very appealing to those that hated bright colors. With a myriad of dark reds, blacks and neon blues, Denizen’s business looked more like a nightclub than a company. Within seconds, she was met with a very darkly dressed young woman whom asked for her to follow along towards the elevators. Once inside, the button that lead toward the deeper underground labeled ‘G10’ was pushed and the elevator was on its way.
Once the ride was over, the woman stood in front of the door and turned to them with her hands folded in front of her. “Mr. Den would like to express his condolences for such an extend wait for your products and hopes you will continue to invest in our company and its expanding technologies.” Her voice was curt and to the point, belaying professionalism that made Zerori grin.
“Certainly,” And with that, she stepped back to reveal the door opening and before her nearly made her mouth water in anticipation. Denizen, you sly bastard…
As large as the ten floors she counted they passed (and she was sure it was larger than that) and layered in various walkways that surrounded a very large ship. It was very angular, almost like an oval saucer but had an obvious engine facing toward one side. On the side of it had some numbers and a name that seemed to elicit a shiver from Zerori: Descent. The young woman besides her gestured for her to follow them to another separate elevator that was unfettered by walls. As they descended down, a man could be seen standing above a taller catwalk than most.
When the elevator stopped, Zerori walked toward the man with held out a hand as he turned to her. Just like before, he had his typical eye patch and bad attitude upon grasping her hand in a firm shake, “Took yer damn time, I see.”
“Had to see what all the craziness was about upstairs – monsters, apparently?”
“Vampyres, but that’s old news. I’ve got somethin’ better than that and you need to get your ass inside this thing to see it,” Turning away from her she watched his trench coat billow behind him as he walked down the stairs into the entrance hatch to the ship. As she followed, she turned to Ari and gestured for her to stay outside for the moment.
“Just until I know it’s not going to explode, kay?” She reasoned and Ari simply crossed her arms before sitting in a chair with a huff. Resisting the urge to smile, Zerori followed the dark man with the even darker clothes down into the ship. The outside was just as amazing as the inside – meticulously cleaned and with a very pleased palette of color. However, where as some parts were grey and white with hints of a beige-blue, there were more striking colors seemingly thrown into the mix.
“We’ve made some vanity modifications based on your preferences.”
“I haven’t told you my preferences,” Zerori shot back.
“You don’t have to say shit with what you wear,” he fired back, pointedly looking at her bright red and blue get-up. “I made certain to tweak the colors to what is psychologically appealing.”
“What do you-? Are you saying I’m not appealing with these colors?!” Zerori yelled, offended. Denizen simply looked at her for a moment before the saiyaness threw her hands up and gestured for him to continue. The tour was under way…
