Stepping into the white room, the young woman looked over her shoulder to ensure the old man was following. He slipped his indoor shoes off before stepping into the white room, chuckling softly to himself.
“By Kami’s name, it’s been ages since I set foot into one of these places. Back in my day, they were much smaller and less...white! So, you’ve brought me here today for…?” The old man grinned at the woman, as she pulled the bundle off her back and tossed it towards him. He caught the container, undoing the zipper with trembling hands. When he saw what laid within, the old man started chuckling again. “Little lady, I’m not sure if you understand what the phrase ‘retired’ means, but I’ve given this up for decades. My family should be visiting the nursing home soon. Thank you for taking an old man onto such a majestic vessel.”
The old man grabbed the zipper, before noticing the woman moving. She strode forward, before stopping five feet in front of him. Slowly going to her knees, the woman placed her forehead against the ground in a deep bow, before whispering.
“Sir...I understand you’ve given up the blade for years. There’s something I have to overcome, an evil that will threaten everything I hold dear. I need your techniques if I’m to stand a chance.”
The old man looked at the girl bowing, head pressed against the floor. He could hear the sincerity and emotion in her voice, and a memory passed through his mind. Many years ago, there was a young man, with the same plea, who had begged an equally old man for his techniques. The old man smiled softly, before muttering in a firm tone.
“Raise your head, girl. I suppose a few moments of sparring wouldn’t kill anyone.”
The young woman’s eyes widened in shock, but she grinned and nodded her head in response. Rising to her feet, the girl walked to the control panel. She paused with her hand over the controls and glanced back towards the old master.
“Sir, what is your Gravity tol-”
“In my prime, I could handle 150 times Earth’s gravity. Now that I’m older...let’s go with 40 times and see if I can still move pretty well.” The old man pulled the katana from the carrying case, pulling the blade partially from the sheath and inspecting the blade. Satisfied, the old man sheathed the sword and waited for the woman to activate the chamber.
Easily navigating the menus, Tulip selected the x40 option and activated it. The pressure that hit her body almost drove the woman to her knees, but the old man stood unbothered by the extreme weight. His gaze swept her stance and a soft smile crossed his face.
“It’s apparent your body is a honed weapon. But on that same token, your ability to wield other weapons is hampered. If you swing a blade with your strongest force without understanding the full spirit of the sword, the two forces clash and ruin the attack with the resulting effect. But enough talk. Let’s start this practice.” The old man spun the katana around in his grasp, sliding the sheath into the belt of his casual pants. He angled the sheath and slid his feet apart, holding his open hand in front of the sheathed blade’s handle. “I’ll show you one of my greatest techniques; the Thunderous Draw. I would show you the strongest version, but I’m too old to replicate it. Go ahead, raise your blade and face me, young girl.”
Tulip thrust both of her hands out, as her silver ki created a katana of silver. The old man smirked and let his drawing hand fall to his side. He started walking straight forward, eyes fixated on the woman. She could sense the strength of this old man; what his age had given this man wasn’t just a weakness, but a wealth of experience. A sudden, sharp pain shot through the woman’s head, and her vision turned blurry. Stumbling forward, she found herself staring at the blade of the old man, just inches from her face. He smiled and returned the blade to his sheath. The woman slowly picked herself up, grabbing her sword from the ground.
“In order to use that attack, you’ll need a sword with a sheath. The trick is to infuse the blade with ki before…” The old man held up the katana, pulling the blade out slightly. Sliding it back down, he put it back into place with an audible click. “...making that metallic sound. If done correctly, the sound will disrupt the balance of an opponent’s ears. Which will leave them floored if done properly, or at least distract them from whatever they are doing. Immediately after that, you slash.”
He drew the sword in an expert motion, before grinning at the young woman. “You go ahead and practice. I need to get some rest after that demonstration.”
Tulip spent the rest of her hour in the room trying to replicate the technique, to no avail. Then, at the end, the woman successfully used the tech. The old man congratulated her, before the two exited the chamber.
After seeing the old man off, Tulip’s phone rang. The woman answered the small device, grinning as she saw Rebecca’s number. “What’s up, cutie?”
“Get access to a computer or visual device immediately! I need to forward something to you immediately!” The girl’s voice was frantic, which made the woman worry. Walking over to a nearby viewing screen, the woman turned it on and spoke over the phone. “I’m at the display near the Gravity Chamber. It’s on, waiting for this thing of yours.”
The next five minutes went by in silence, as the old man and woman watched something horrifying and shocking. The words spoken and visuals that accompanied only served to drive the point further home. Out in the galaxy, a war was happening. One that didn’t involve the Earth yet...but if this transmission spoke the truth, there was something clearly wrong and evil with the world. Tulip glanced towards the old man and muttered.
“I’m sorry you had to see that, old man. It shouldn’t be an additional burden for you to bear.”
“The galaxy will always have its turmoil. That’s what the youth of today has to contend with. My generation passes on the lessons; the youth carry the banner and fight the evils. Good luck, girl. My techniques will serve you well in the days to come.”
Leaving the woman alone with her thoughts, the old man walked off towards the exit of the huge spaceship.
