Panting heavily after her draining training with Tulip and first experience under augmented gravity, Ryder found herself torn between two choices available to her. The easy path of resting for the rest of the day and coming back another time… or the hard road of diving right back into that gravity.
Even when rebelling against authority, never once in her life had Ryder truly taken the easy path. Whatever she did, she did it with all of her dedication and commitment. Steeling her will for the challenge that lay ahead, the woman made her way back inside the gravity chamber and twisted the dial back up to ten times earth’s gravity.
“Ten times… this was good, but I feel like it isn’t my limit. Tough it out Sam, you’ve got this!” Growling through clenched teeth, Ryder twisted the dial up another notch until it read Gravity times twenty.
The pressure hit her like an anvil. In an instant Ryder went from standing to kneeling, from kneeling to prostrate on the floor. Truth be told, times ten WAS her practical limit, but the stubborn woman refused to accept her own limit and pressed on ahead of schedule.
Slowly, deeply she breathed, circulating her Ki through the meridians of her body to strengthen herself and resist the gravity. Slowly, ever so slowly she could feel herself beginning to acclimate to that pressure. With great difficulty she forced herself back up to hands and knees… and then slowly lowered herself back to prostrate.
One pushup, two pushups, all the way up until she could do ten in a row before Ryder felt confident enough to force her way up to sit in the lotus position. Determination could be seen flashing in those blue-green eyes as Ryder’s white aura flared briefly before cycling back into her body to reinforce it.
Seconds slowly turned to minutes, which in turn slowly dragged on until one hour’s time had passed since she sat up. Clenching her fists and gritting her teeth, Ryder rose to her feet by sheer force of will, beginning to walk around the chamber in a circle. Each lift of a foot took all the strength she could muster. Every time her foot tromped down uncontrollably the woman could not help but to wince at least a little.
Refusal to give up, ‘riding out’ any adversity, this was one of Ryder’s core character traits and one of the reasons she chose the name in her youth. Onwards she pressed, trudging forcefully until she could walk, walking until she could jog, jogging until she could run. Her entire body was caked in sweat, each footstep leaving a tiny puddle behind it on the floor. Even so she pressed ever onwards.
When at last she could run no further, Ryder allowed herself to collapse onto her hands and knees… going back to pushups like this was just another level of military advancement.
Over and over again she pushed herself up off the floor, clapping between each rep and edging herself closer to the emergency shutdown switch on the wall against the floor. Reach it she did, but she did not push it just yet.
Finally, when she landed the one thousand pushup did Ryder collapse forward, one hand sliding into the switch and disabling the gravity even as she lapsed into some ridiculously well deserved sleep.
