It was just another almost normal night for the young saiyan other than the fact that earlier in the day he had lost to a warrior Namek in a spar and his body wasn't exactly agreeing with the bruises and cuts he had gained in the brawl. That didn't matter though, regardless Athren was going to live his life as if it didn't happen.
Once again he found himself trying to entertain himself without training. The sun was down and the street lights of west city lit up the area quite brightly. As of this time most of the citizens of the city were asleep but there was still the odd few that lingered out late at night. Currently Athren was sitting on the ledge of a rooftop by himself just looking around. It wasn't his idea of fun but at least he wasn't too far from his apartment. This rooftop and that spot was the exact same spot that he first saw Kaiyo from and the alley he first made conversation with her was right there. What Athren didn't know was that he was about to make a second friend out of that alley.
Slowly he got to his feet and looked up into the night sky. There wasn't a star out or anything but than again that was part of the light pollution coming out of the city. He then began to lift himself off the old rooftop and was about to fly away until something had caught his attention, curious he had lowered himself back down so his feet softly landed on the hard rooftop and observed the alley way.
What he saw didn't amuse him. He saw a human male walking down it with a potato sack in his right hand that appeared to have something moving in it. In his right hand he had a baseball bat that he leaned on his shoulder. "Stupid Mutt. I clean up after you and I feed you and all you do is destroy everything I own!" With that he tossed the bag at the dumpster that Kaiyo had once set on fire with the sound of a small creature hitting the banging metal of the dumpster Athren twitched. It wasn't the best sound, it was a terrible sound at that. The worst part was easily the cry that the puppy inside the bag had made. Hitting the ground the puppy poked his head out of the bag and growled at its owner. It was clear that it was terrified.
The owner then began to walk towards the puppy with the bat raised night. It was now time for Athren to step in.
Athren once again leaped off the rooftop and landed behind the man armed with the wooden baseball bat. Athren's temper at this point was raging a little bit. He didn't see the need for a defenceless little puppy to be battered like that. "Put the bat down and get the hell out of here before I decide to turn that at on you."
On closer observation the man appeared to be in his late forties. He had a bigger grown out beard and a beanie on top of his head and wore a thicker plaid jacket that had multiple holes in it, he had also put out a fowl smell of pure alcohol. This man had now just turned his attention to Athren. "Excuse me? What did you just say to me? Beat it kid or I'll turn this bat on you!" It was quite clear that Athren's presences didn't amuse the older man but that didn't matter. What mattered was the puppy that was in the sack.
Athren shook his head lightly and clenched his right fist tightly. He really didn't want this man to go unpunished but it was the right thing to do. " I'm going to give you one more chance to walk away, put the damn bat down and get out of here. If you don't I guess I'll just have to knock you out." Athren's eyes were locked one the brown ones of the older man.
The man then once again lifted his bat and began to walk towards Athren.
All Athren said was "You really don't want to do that." It was a fair warning and if the man decided to ignore it that was going to be his problem and not one of Athren's.
The man then wrapped his left hand around the handle of the baseball bat. It was obvious that he was hoping to cause some major damage to the young saiyan warrior but it just wasn't going to happen. "This will teach you to get involved in other people's business!" He then launched the bat towards Athren's skull by swinging it widely around aiming for the side.
Athren simply rolled his eyes to the mans words. The threat was empty. There was absolutely zero danger to Athren right now and apparently only Athren had known that. Quickly Athren brought his forearm up and put it in the direct path of the bat. On collision of the wood to the flesh of Athren the bat snapped and sent large splinters of wood flying into and past Athren. Of course none of them did any damage though. The ones that hit Athren simply bounced off and collided with the ground.
The older mans eyes went wide as he witnessed this. There wouldn't have even been a mark on Athren's arm. Athren then smirked devilishly as he saw the mans reaction. "Told you."
With that Athren launched his right fist forward and tapped the mans nose. With a crack blood began to pour out and yet that wasn't it. Right after the collision between face and fist the man flew back into the dumpster and flipped into it. He was now out cold and going to be in pain when he woke up. ~ Hopefully that'll teach the bastard. Why the hell would he attack something so innocent and so helpless? I don't understand this race. Some are great and others are so terrible. Than again the saiyans are far worse. Oh well. Problem solved.~
Now putting his attention on the puppy in the old potato sack Athren slowly walked over. Once he reached it he slowly crouched down. The small puppy then growled at him. It wasn't really much of a surprise though. If Athren was in the puppies situation he probably wouldn't trust anybody either. "It's Alright little guy. I'm not going to hurt you. I want to help you." Obviously the puppy wouldn't understand a word coming from Athren's lips but maybe it would calm it down. Who knew at this point but anything was worth a try.
Slowly Athren moved his hand towards it. He wanted to pet it if it was okay with the puppy. Seeing his hand move closer the puppy exposed It's sharp canine teeth as it growled louder. " it's okay. Relax will ya? I want to help you, not hurt you like he did."
At that moment the puppy went to sink it's teeth into Athren's hand. Luckily he was a hell of a lot faster than the little puppy that sat before him he pulled his hand back quickly and chuckled. "Stubborn little thing aren't you?" At that moment the puppy took a step out of the sack. His teeth still exposed and his eyes locked into Athren. At that moment Athren could see an faded orange collar around the dogs neck that was clearly way too tight. It was obvious that it was causing the pup some discomfort and maybe even some pain. Attached to the collar was a bone shaped tag that had a name on it. The puppies name was sprocket. Though Athren couldn't read it at the moment. It was much to dark in the alleyway.
This dog was a black and white border collie with beautiful blue eyes just like Athren's.
Athren then began to reach both of his hands towards Sprocket's tight collar. "Don't you even think about biting me this time." Saying it sternly Athren slowly got both his hands on to collar. As quickly as he could he popped the pin out and loosened it a good two holes back giving lots of play around the dogs neck, more than enough to fit a finger and a half between the material and the dogs neck.
Once Sprocket had felt the relief from the stress and pressure on his neck his teeth went from exposed and ready to covered and relaxed. Even the growling had stopped. What happened next wasn't expected by Athfen either. "That better? Must be. You don't seem as pissed off as you did before." Athren said as Sprocket leaped up towards him and began giving him kisses on his face.
Petting Sprocket's head as he did Athren had a first. He somehow managed to have a bright smile on his face and a loud laughter leaving his lips. Even though he wouldn't admit it, it was a great feeling to be happy and joyed like this. Hopefully it would be the first of many.
It may not seem like much to anybody else and to some the dogs affection may even be somewhat of an annoyance but for Athren it was a massive deal. All of his life he had got the cold shoulder. He got abused, attacked, insulted and even left out because he was different. Sure he had some flings back home but they didn't mean anything, they were simply one nighters for one purpose. They weren't affection. Here and now though for the first time in his life he actually felt the affection from another being and he felt really good about himself for what he had just done to earn it. It was more than enough for him to drop his cold and solid walls that his home planet forced him to put up. Now maybe he could actually connect with others and have decent conversations instead of shutting people down and out. He had finally felt happiness and it was amazing.
Athren then picked Sprocket up in a cradle style and held him in his left arm. With his right Athren started to tickle his belly. Slowly he walked out into the light so he could see the name on the tag that was on the collar. "So Sprocket is your name? I like it." He said quietly to the dog.
Athren thought that it was time to get this dog indoors and get him comfortable. Hopefully Anzu and Kaiyo didn't mind puppies cause if they did Athren probably wouldn't be staying. Quickly Athren lifted himself into the air and headed to the apartment...
After a few minutes he found himself walking through the front door of the small apartment. It was dark and there wasn't a sound so he had assumed that the two sisters were asleep though it wouldn't really surprise him if Kaiyo had snuck out for some night time activities. Looking down at his new puppy Athren smiled brightly as he noticed that Sprocket had fallen asleep on their short travel.
Being tired as well Athren kicked of his boots and walked over to the couch. Laying down he rested his head on his pillow.
Sprocket was still curled up in Athren's left arm and sound asleep.. And not before long Sprocket's new saiyan friend had also fallen asleep..
