After a morning long training session Athren had been wandering around downtown of West Capital. He really had no reason other than hopes of meeting somebody who could potentially be a capable fighter. That was how he met Ukare and he remembers exactly how that went. It was a very enjoyable spar regardless of the outcome that Athren had suffered. During his time roaming the streets he had gotten many stares and many ignorant comments regarding his appearance due to his tail and his clothing style. He was a saiyan and wasn't going to change a damn thing about himself to please everybody who couldn't help but stare.
Continuing his walk he made it a couple of blocks with the same thing happening. As annoying as it got Athren didn't make a scene out of it. Even if he wanted to the only thing he could have done was beat everybody that stared at him up and that option really didn't seem reasonable, even though it could potentially be amusing. Regardless it wasn't the right thing to do.
Step by step he walked. He was just about to pass a wooden board with a good handful of advertisements stapled to it. Above it was a roof to prevent the bad weather from ruining all of the paper advertisements. It had everything from toys and vehicles for sale to animals and even help wanted ads. Athren had no interest it at all but with a little bit of luck with a mix of fate a just of wind happened to blow in and rip one single piece of paper off of the board and sent it floating through the air right into Athren's chest. Instinctively his right hand came up and caught the paper that had drifted into him.
Pulling it away from himself he held it with two hands to prevent any more wind from taking it from him or ruffling it while he was reading it.
" Help Wanted:
Requesting a young able body for two hard days of farm labour with pay, food and a bed for two nights. Must be able to lift and dig.
Please call Jerry at 555-3533 or come see me at 3 Dairy Lane."
Athren arched a brow as he finished reading the hand written advertisement. It sounded like he was more than capable of doing the work needed and he figured he could use the money for the Heavy Weights that he had been wanting to purchase for a while. With his strength it couldn't be that much physical labour and with his speed it couldn't take the full two days. Even if it did he could use the money. Taking a few moments to make a final decision about what he wanted to do he came upon the conclusion that it wouldn't hurt to put the work in and get the reward. If he had heavy weights like he had wanted he'd be able to get much stronger a hell of a lot quicker than he would without. So it was an easy win win.
The only problem was that he didn't know where dairy lane was nor did he know what a phone was. So he couldn't call and he couldn't simply just fly there in a rush like he would have wanted too. Luckily he had a solution. A couple blocks down there was a glass encased map of the city and the surrounding areas of it. That seemed like the easiest way to find where the location of the work was.
He then began to walk back to where he had seen that map and with a high number of stares once again he reached it without any difficulties.
Observing the map there was a big star that marked where he was currently standing. That was very simple to spot. The next part was going to be a real challenge. He didn't have a single clue to as where this dairy lane was located so it would take a long time to actually find the location. Using some common sense though he figured that such a Lane wouldn't be located in the heart of the city or in the residential areas of the city either and the fact that the address number was a three gave Athren the idea that it was going to be in the outskirts of the city in the farmlands. Another thing that tipped him off to this point was the fact that the as requested a farm labourer so Athren assumed his best bet was to hop from farm to farm until he found dairy lane. It took roughly about five minutes to find its location on the map. The bright side was it wasn't too far away from Bree's house and it wouldn't take very long to get there either so long as Athren's memory of where it was located held up.
Without any signs of hesitation Athren lifted himself into the air and began to fly straight up so he could have a better vision without the heights of the sky scrapers getting in his line of sight. Of course the attention he drew to himself by flying was that of the tail reactions but tenfold. Every single person in the area couldn't help but stare in awe. It was kind of annoying but what could he do?
Now with a clear three sixty view of the city and its surroundings Athren began to head in the direction that the map had pointed him in. Not before long Athren had found a major highway that had led out of the bright lighted city and led the people traveling it into the country where there wasn't much but animals and trees. If Athren had been correct this highway would connect to the dirt road known as Dairy Lane. If Athren had been wrong then he'd be absolutely clueless to where the hell this address was. Regardless of how difficult this was going to be he was going to keep looking.
After a few short minutes of him flying down close to the highway Athren had began to cross countless cattle fields, most of the hay was already wrapped up in large round bails and the cattle were eating the grass undisturbed. Finally Athren had reached an old dirt road that met the paved highway. It was on the right side and on the corner was the road sign. It was a bent steel metal pole connected to the cracked and faded green sign that said Dairy Lane on it.
Finally, he had found it. He then began to fly down the road at a slow pace making sure it was easy enough to find the right address.
After passing two signs that were labeled one and two Athren came across the road sign that had a large number three printed on it in white ink. Upon inspection of the property it really wasn't much. It was a long dirt driveway that led up to an older looking house. On the right side was yet another field but this one was empty, surrounding it was an old wooden fence that appeared to be quite worn down and broken.
Continuing his flight he spotted a chicken coop and a large green tractor beside it. It seemed quite clear that the old farm machine had seen better days though that didn't really matter. It was just a simple observation.
In front of the old house was an old rusted pick up truck that was lifted up on the passenger's front end by a jack and the wheel was off. Near it was an elderly man removing a brake caliper with a brand new replacement beside it. Athren flew up nice and close and landed right behind him. The elderly man didn't even notice.
Finally Athren decided to make himself known by asking one simple question. "You wouldn't be Jerry, would you?"
The elderly man then looked over quickly almost as if he was startled. He then put the ten millimetre wrench down on the dirt and stood up to face the young saiyan. "Yeah, I'm Jerry." With that the man spit out the juices from the thick wad of chewing tobacco he had tucked under his bottom lip. Nothing his Athren's attire, scouter and tail he commented on it. "you're a strange lookin' fellow aren't ya?" He then dusted off his denim coveralls before returning to make eye contact with Athren.
Athren really didn't understand why the man attempted to brush the dust off himself. Underneath the dust was just dirt stains and grease and oil stains. This man was obviously a hick. Regardless Athren needed the money if the job was still available.
To avoid any further comments about Athren appearance he didn't respond to the strange one. He simply decided to ask about the advertisement. " I saw the advertisement you had posted in West Capital. If the job is still available I want it."
The old man then reached into his denim pocket on the overalls and pulled out a box of cigarettes. He removed one and put it to his lips and pulled a brown lighter out of the same box. Then with one flick of the lighter he ignited the open tobacco at the end of the paper rolled cigarette. Putting it all away he inhaled two lungs worth of smoke and exhaled into the air. "What's your name kid? That advertisement has been up for three weeks and nobody's taken it. Kids these days I tell ya." With that he took another drag from his smoke.
" it's Athren." Stating it firmly he glanced down at the smoke and then back up into the mans eyes. "So then I can do the labour for you?" Athren asked eagerly. He didn't want to waste all his day finding out about it. He just wanted to do the job or leave if he couldn't. No use wasting any time with this.
The old man then greeted him with a large friendly smile. "Yup! Though it'll probably take two days due to the fact you'll have to beat the posts in by hand. My ol' tractors down and out for a while I think. Just like this here old truck of mine." With that, the man gave a light boot to the rocker panel of the truck and nothing rust fell down as he caused a size twelve hole in it. Having the last haul off his cigarette the man tossed the butt towards the dirty he then proceeded to spit out another mouthful of chew juice. He then pointed over to the old wooden fence. With Athren's head turning to look at it the old man began to explain exactly what he needed done. "first things first. I need you to take out all them ol' fence posts and cross boards and toss em in the middle of the field and I'll burn em all. You're gonna have to carry all of em so I hope you don't mind a lot of walking and lifting. After all that's fine I've got one hundred and fifty steel posts to go back into the ground where the old ones came out. Without machinery it should take you almost two full days. Once the metal posts are in the ground you won't be needed as I'll get an electrician to do the rest for the electric fence and when you're hungry come on in for se grub and when the sun goes down I'll show ya where you can rest your head. Ya understand what I need done?"
Athren nodded his head and smirked. For him it wouldn't take anymore than an hour at the most. "Alright. Easy enough. Won't take me very long at all."
Jerry then pointed to the garage that laid beside the house. "All the tools ya need will be in there. Put back what you take."
Athren then lifted himself up into the air. "I've got all the tools I need right here. It'll all be done before you know it. Though. Where are the metal posts that you need in the ground?"
The old man couldn't believe his eyes as he saw Athren fly up into the air like that. " uh, over by the garage. Just on the workbench there's a big box of them.."
Athren simply nodded his head to man. Once that was done he headed over to the wooden fence that surrounded the property. There was a hundred and fifty posts to be removed and three hundred cross boards in total. He figured he best get started.
Then man then turned back to his truck to continue on his brake job. "This generation sure is a strange bunch of wipper snappers."
Really he didn't care about Athren powers and tail because he thought it was just a this generation kind of thing.
Reaching the fence in a hurt Athren inspected the situation. Really there wasn't much to figure out but he wanted a plan to do this easily. The easiest way he could see would be to remove all of the cross boards that went from post two post. Once those were removed every single post would be easy to pull out considering they wouldn't be connected to two other separate posts.
Lowering himself Athren's feet softly landed in the grassy field right beside the fence. He then placed both his palms on the upper board of the fence. He then applied a massive amount of pressure quickly to force the board and the nails keeping it in the two posts out. He then repeated that same thing with the bottom board. Having both of the boards out Athren picked them both up and from where he was standing launched them in the air towards the middle of the field. Athren then walked over to the next two boards and repeated the same thing had had on the first two. Popping them out in a hurry and launching them towards the middle.
Athren rinsed and repeated this step until all three hundred cross boards were piled up in the middle of the field. Next step was the wooden posts that were hammered down into the ground. They really wouldn't be that difficult to pull out considering the strength of the young saiyan.
Walking over to the nearest post Athren clamped his hands around it tightly and gave it a quick tug. With little to no hesitation the wooden post slid out of the ground. Just like with the cross boards Athren launched the thing into the air and watched as it collided with the other wood with a cloud clunk. Walking over to the next post Athren once again repeated what he did with the first one. In fact, Athren rinsed and repeated that same method for all one hundred and fifty posts and it didn't take long for the burn pile in the middle to get high and it didn't take him long to finish that part of the job.
Finally, Athren had only one part of the job left to do and it wouldn't be any more difficult then the post removing part of the job.
In a hurry Athren flew over to the garage where the man had pointed out the box with the metal posts in it.
Picking the box up Athren took it back to the field. Once again landing he grabbed a post out of the box and with one hand slammed it into the ground. With Athren's strength behind it the post went down far enough to be sturdy and it was nice and straight. Athren did this with all one hundred and fifty posts until the job was done. He then took the box over to the burn pile and dropped in on top.
Now being done he headed back to where had last spotted Jerry. This time Jerry had the drivers side of the truck Jacked up and he was working on the brakes there. Athren then approached him. " it's done. All of it."
Jerry then looked at his watch then back to Athren. " it's only been fourth five minutes. I don't believe ya kid."
Athren then pointed towards where the old wooden fence was fourth five minutes before that. "Take a look for yourself and I'll be right here waiting."
With that Athren had crossed his arms in front of his chest.
Jerry then stood up straight and walked in the direction of Athrens work. While he walked he once again lit a cigarette. It took Jerry about twenty five minutes to inspect all of the posts and the pile of wood Athren had created. Returning to Athren he has a look of surprise on his old wrinkly face. "Well I'll be damned. Well alright kid. I don't know how you did it but ya did. Wait here a second will ya?"
Athren then nodded his head. He didn't really have much to say. He just wanted to get paid and leave so he could potentially get some more training in for the day.
A few minutes had gone past now and Jerry had returned to Athren. "Well, here ya are kid. Don't spend it all in one place." With those words said the old man extended his hand out with a large stack of bills loosely gripped onto.
Slowly, Athren reached out and took the money that he had earned. With a simple head nod Athren lifted himself up in the air and flew off to count his money.
