"Greetings sir, If you would please awaken, our tour can begin shortly." A body is stretched across a slab of stone and beside him is a nefarious looking creature which seems interested in our sleeping specimen. A few pokes by this little being is enough to get the man twitching, but its not until the being grabs the staff lying to the left of it and strikes the body of this man does he start to come to. "Greetings Alexander, I'm afraid that your slumber has come to an end, as I have been instructed to awake you at this exact time." Alexander struggled to get onto his feet, quickly collapsing under his own weight. "Don't worry, this should take care of the atrophy."
Alexander looked down in horror as he saw his muscle had been shrunken down to dust, but was more shocked at the creature he saw beside him. This thing was made out of some sort of metallic material which Alexander had never come across before. It also had the ability of levitation, and could communicate in a language which Alexander could also understand. "What are you? Speak quickly before I make you regret waking me." Alexander reached for his staff, but did not even have the strength to pick it up off the ground. "Please sir, take this medicine for your atrophy, I insist that it will make you feel better."
Alexander did not know what this 'atrophy' was, but he was going nowhere in his current state, and so he allowed the robot to pour the liquid down his throat, and he quickly felt a change in his body. He convulsed and squirmed on the ground, had this creature poisoned him? No, it seems not. The convulsions stopped and Alexander felt his muscles return to normal, and his strength also returned back to normal, if not better than before. He finally made it to his feet and quickly snatched the staff before the floating hunk of metal could grab a hold of it. "Now I repeat myself, tell me who you are and who you report to before I use this thing."
The being seemed unfazed by Alexander's threats, but divulged his information anyway. "My name is PAD129, which stands for Personal Archaeological Device, model number 129. 24 years ago you were discovered buried underneath a pile of rubble, but there was some sort of barrier that was protecting you from harm. My master, Doctor Jonathan Wilks, was the one who lead the expedition, but when they found you, they had no way of knowing how to awake you, and so I was left here to think of ways to wake you up, but it seems all you needed was some blunt force trauma. The remedy which restored your muscles was synthesized by Doctor Wilks and left here for you."
Alexander was still quite confused on the matter, but pressed deeper. "Where is this Doctor Wilks now? And what does he want with me?" PAD129 hovered over to Alexander and began examining wounds over his arm. "Doctor Wilks died approximately 7 years and 239 days ago. Doctor Wilks was a man of science and discovery, he was planning of interviewing you when you awoke, to discover how you got here and where you come from." Alexander rescinded his arm, and walked over to his bookshelf. He looked around for clues his master may have left for him, but all the parchment had turned to dust.
"What happened here? Where is all my equipment gone? And how long was I unconscious?" PAD once again tried to examine wounds over Alexander's body. "Those questions are very difficult to answer, sir. The dating used by Doctor Wilks dates the parchment to around 3000 years ago, your equipment has likely gone the way of your books over time, and assuming that you are as old as the parchment, you were unconscious for 3000 years, sir." Alexander was shocked, he could not believe that his master would really put him under for that long. "For what purpose master? Why would you do this...?"
Alexander grabbed his staff and placed it on his back, then turned back to PAD. "Thank you for the information, but I'm afraid I must leave now and find more answers." Alexander approached the door leading out to what he hoped was a world he was still familiar with, but PAD quickly intercepted him and blocked his path. "Before you go, I think I may have something of use to you." PAD used its small mechanical arm to reach inside itself and pull out an old looking scroll. "We found this next to you. Whatever force was protecting it was beginning to fade, so I made sure that it was kept in a good condition for you."
Alexander grabbed the scroll and opened it, but before he could begin reading, the scroll jumped out of his hands and onto the ground. Alexander, not irritated, tried to pick it up, but lept backwards when the face of his master, the old hermit, flew out of the scroll. "Alexander? I presume you are finally awake as the scroll shall only activate when you open it." Alexander was relieved to finally see a familiar face. "Master? Where are you? What has happened to me?" Alexander waited a few moments, but the old man had no response for him. "Master?" Again though, nothing. "Before I go on, I should say that this message is not interactive, not even I could figure out how to do that my boy."
"Now then, let me explain my actions. You and I both know that you were not ready to take on the dictator Akuno at your current power, he would have picked you apart just as easily as the day we first crossed paths. I tried to explain this to you, but you would not listen, and so I had to take more drastic methods, ones which I am not proud of. I used an old incarnation to put you asleep, it shouldn't have lasted too long, but seeing as this method is recorded before I try to battle Akuno myself, I have no way of knowing how you are. I am sorry for doing this to you Alexander, but I promise I was doing it for the right reasons."
The old hermit's face disappeared, and Alexander fell to his knees. He was a strong man, but in this time of weakness, he failed to stop a tear travel across his face. He quickly got back to his feet, and rolled the parchment back into a scrolls, placing it in his pocket. "I don't suppose you have anything else for me, do you?" PAD shock its body, indicating the negative, and so Alexander this time made it out the door, and into the wild. Just one step out the door and he found himself inside the room of a family trying to eat their dinner. PAD quickly flew over to Alexander and explained. "The expedition was very expensive, and so Wilks rented out this place to other people."
"Greetings friends, my name is PAD129, and this..." The family collectively scream, and quickly ran out the door. "Very strange behaviour, wouldn't you say?" Alexander sat at the table and ate what leftovers there were. "I imagine you must be very hungry after that long sleep, right?" Alexander got out of his chair, and walked over to PAD. "You stay here now, I can take care of myself, alright?" Alexander left the house and looked around for any familiar looking landmarks, but everything he had ever known was torn down and replaced. One thing he now knew however seemed to be always on his back no matter what.
"If you need directions, I will be very happy to help you out, sir." Alexander was now very disgruntled with the machine but was trying his best to stay calm. "Why are you still following me, PAD?" The robot hovered around to the front of Alexander, and put up a holographic map of the area. "Doctor Wilks' last message to me was to always take care of you once you had awoken, and now that you are here, I can finally fulfill that mission of his." Alexander examined the map and was more confused now than he was before. "What the hell are all these places, and these symbols, I don't understand any of them."
The language had clearly evolved since Alexander's time, and he had been left behind. "Is there something specific that you are looking for, sir?" Alexander placed his hand on his chin and thought deeply for a moment. "Yes, I think there may be. Take me to the nearest population centre." PAD spent a few moments calculating, before responding to Alexander. "Alright then sir, there is a city not far from here, if you'll follow me I can take you there in a matter of no time." PAD quickly shot off, and Alexander not so enthusiastically followed. Alexander was more of a lone wolf, and predicated this machine would get him in trouble sooner rather than later.
About an hour later, Alexander finally made it to the city, and was shocked at what he saw. There were flying machines which flew right past him, and people communicating to small devices they placed onto their ear, everybody seemed to have one. He saw large screens with all sort of pictures being displayed like the parchment that his master had left for him. "Magic has advanced so much since my time." PAD again shook itself and tried its best to explain. "I'm afraid you have the situation all wrong sir! There is no magic involved here, this is just technology and science at work, the best of the best is here."
Alexander did not know what technology was, but assumed it to be some sort of offshoot to magic. He walked past marts the size of towns and people beyond what the eye could see. Alexander continued on searching for something that would give him a message, just any sort of indicator of what to do next, and he found it in the form of a mugging. While walking across town, he took a shortcut through an alleyway, and came across a man being robbed. He approached the group of men and tried to access the situation. "What's going on here!?" Alexander was confident in his ability to stop the average human being, even with their technology.
The robbers turned around and laughed when they saw the ridiculous outfit that Alexander was wearing. "Who the hell is this guy?" The apparent leader of the group walked over to Alexander and poked him in the chest. "Look buddy, I think the Castes and Crusaders cosplay convention is further down, so why don't you get out of here before you get yourself hurt? We wouldn't want that now would we?" Alexander backed up a bit, and instead pulled out his staff, sticking it in the face of the leader. "Think about your next move very carefully." The muggers once again laughed and Alexander was therefore left with one situation.
He pulled back his staff, and prepared for an attack... but had forgotten all of his incarnations. The gang was now annoyed, and attacked Alexander, pulling a knife out and striking Alexander, just catching his arm while he tried to get out of harm'sway. Just then, PAD came into the mix, and fired a laser strike which struck the leader through the chest, killing him instantly. The other gang members quickly ran away, only to be shoot down by PAD as well. The man being mugged thanked Alexander for his service, and quickly ran off too. "Like I said sir, I have been tasked with protecting you and I shall not fail!"
Alexander smiled and responded. "Alright then, you can follow me, now how about you take me to the lab that your master worked at?" PAD nodded, and once again zipped off, leaving Alexander to try and keep up. About an hour of running later and they had made it to the outskirts of the city, which was unfortunately where the lab was situated. PAD entered in the security code and flew inside, leaving Alexander to explore himself. The place wasn't very interesting, except for one room which Alexander came across. It had a warning on it, exclaiming that it was strictly forbidden by all personnel except for those with level 9 clearance.
Usually Alexander would respect these kind of rules, but in this situation there was no personnel in site, and so he took his staff and thought very hardly until a spell finally came to him, and he was able to blast right through the door. Inside was a very old man and small man who was utterly frightened by the explosion. "What the hell do you think you're doing!? Do you have any idea about what goes on in here!?" Alexander smirked and said "Well, no, but that's why I got in here." The man was clearly upset, but took in a deep breath and put a smile on his face. "Well, I am Doctor Garabardy, and I always happy to feed the curious minds."
Garabardy took Alexander on a tour of the restricted area, showing off mainly different weapons which were being designed and manufactured. "Now that we're done with the weapons, let me show you why this section is really off limit." Garabardy used his keycard to open up a door, inside which was genetically modified super soldiers. "We don't have a name for them yet, in fact they haven't even left the testing phase, there's still a lot of kinks left to be taken care of, perhaps you could help?" Alexander didn't understand, but before he could ask, the door was locked behind him, and the pods containing these mutated monsters began to open.
"Combat test number 7: Begin!" The monstrosities opened their eyes and launched their attack. Alexander jumped out of the way, and tried to get a grip on the situation. There was only three of them, so he wasn't horribly outnumbered, but still at a disadvantage. He grabbed his staff and fired an energy beam at one of the creatures, only to have to reflect right off and almost hit Alexander. The three run together and grabbed a hold of Alexander, two of them grabbed an arm each, while the other one proceeded to pummel Alexander to near unconsciousness. Alexander was no longer going to underestimate his enemies, assuming he made it out of this alive.
Before the mutants could finish him off, the door blasted open, and in flew PAD. He fired his laser beam through the head of pummeler, which caused the other mutants to drop Alexander, who quickly took his staff and swung it at the head of fleeing mutant, knocking it unconscious. The last mutant would rather go back into its pod than deal with this, and so it did, putting itself back to sleep. Garabardy tried to flee, but PAD made sure that he didn't get very far, grabbing a hold of him and throwing him into a mutant pod, putting him to sleep as well. "Like I said sir, always have your back." Alexander smiled, and followed PAD to Wilks room.
When he got there, he was very surprised to see was looked like repo men inside. The men stopped their work and looked over towards Alexander and PAD, trying to grab the latter. "How much do you think we'll get for this one sir?" PAD quickly escaped his grip and prepared to fire, but Alexander stopped him. He looked around and saw that the room was filled with things that were from the same room as he was found, preserved by the doctor. "What the hell is going on here?" The man in charge approached Alexander. "The Doctor in charge has been dead for almost 8 years, but we only found out a few days ago, but there's new owners now, and this stuff is getting sold."
Alexander insisted that they leave the stuff behind, but not wanting to resort to more violence, there was not much he could do to stop them. He looked around at his memories being taken away, until he came across an old book of his, a journal to be exact. He insisted that he keep it, but the men would not budge. PAD flew over and took out a coin purse which held just enough Zeni to purchase back the journal. Alexander once again thanked PAD for the help, and left behind the laboratory. He flipped through his journal, looking for something which could perhaps set him on a new path, for him and his new friend.
Alexander was still quite confused on the matter, but pressed deeper. "Where is this Doctor Wilks now? And what does he want with me?" PAD129 hovered over to Alexander and began examining wounds over his arm. "Doctor Wilks died approximately 7 years and 239 days ago.
