Backstory: The air was cool on the early-morning spring day when a young couple, Pinach and Calla, welcomed their new child into the world in a modest hospital in a small town. Born squawking, with tufts of wisteria hair on her head, they affectionately named their baby daughter 'Lily', after her grandmother. Pride, always a staple of the Saiyan race, was oddly different for the new father when it came to holding his daughter for the first time. Tears welled up and he smiled holding in his arms something that he was more proud of then any of his skills as a warrior.
Life, in the modest house they had in the countryside, for the couple changed quite naturally as they cared and raised their daughter. Calla tended to the child most of the time, always gentle and attentive, but Pinach was the pinnacle of protectiveness over his daughter. Lily learning to crawl opened up a lot to explore, with her dad swiftly dashing around to ensure she didn't bump into walls or anything he thought could hurt her. Calla urged him to leave her be, as she was in no danger, but his pride would only swell as he always kept a watchful eye on his baby girl.
The memory that most sticks out to Lily is when she remembers opening the patio door without being noticed. As a toddler, keen to explore everywhere, she had managed to get the handled turned as her dad was in the other room for a snack. Her eyes grew wide at the vast green fields that stretched out before her, small groups of trees dotting the sea of green. The blue sky splotched with white clouds was breathtaking to her, so she promptly sat on the steps and bounce down until her bare feet tickled across the grass.
She got maybe fifteen feet before she was swiftly scooped up by her dad, his voice stern and face in a scowl as he admonished the little girl for running off. Blissfully unaware of what she had done, she merely tugged at her daddy's jacket and pointed up at the sky, gleefully proclaiming 'Clouds' over and over. As much as he had been shocked and stern about her escape act, he couldn't help but smile at his precious daughter. Without a second thought, Pinach held his daughter firmly and easily lifted into the sky, flying up towards the clouds that Lily had pointed to so keenly.
The land below dropped away, the house and trees shrinking away, revealing even more green fields, yellow stretches of farmland, and sparkling lakes dotting the countryside. Up above, more blue that stretched far beyond her eyes could see, and in no time they were very close to the clouds, the little girl giddy as she pointed them out. Pinach didn't dilly-dally in the sky though, as he didn't want Lily to get cold, but the flight itself had seemed to been plenty to make the little girl overjoyed.
As she got older, life started to make sense to her. Calla opted to teach her daughter at home, the simplest solution for schooling they found. She was also becoming more aware of her surroundings, including the fact her dad was often away from home for days at a time. When she was curious, she would try asking her mom, but always got a vague answer. As far as she was told, he did mundane business trips with his partner, Dessel, but Lily had a hunch that it was more then that.
She never could ask her father what he did, because whenever he returned home she was always so happy to see him that she practically forgot her questions. Dessel wasn't too strange either, just a regular guy who seemed to be good friends with her dad. He would always smile at her and ruffle her hair if she got near, much to her annoyance, but her dad always found it adorable so she endured the obnoxious habit. Pinach being home always seemed to make the house come alive, injecting a certain energy into everything they did to make everyday he was home an exciting experience.
Lily was a bit older then the age of 11 when she happened to glance up from her school books to see her dad's ship returning to the house. She rushed outside to greet the Wayfinder, her mother also stepping outside and resting her hands on her daughter's shoulders. As the ship landed, the door slid open and the ramp extended as Dessel stepped down. He had a noticeable limp, a wearily look in his usual cheerful eyes, and he was carrying a jacket in clenched fist. The young girl realized quite quickly that something was wrong, turning to glance up at the sad, yet expecting, face of her mother. As Dessel reached the two of them, he didn't bother to ruffle her hair or even speak, he just handed Pinach's jacket to the young girl and silently hugged Calla as she began to softly weep.
The little girl stood in shock, holding her dad's favorite jacket close to her chest, the familiar smell bringing in a deluge of memories of her father. Tears welled up in her eyes as she began to cry into the large jacket, hugging it tightly as her mother kneeled down to hug her distraught daughter. Lily didn't know when she had gone into the house, or when she had fallen asleep, all she could recall was sobbing into her dad's jacket. She felt physically ill from the grim news they had received, and stumbled to the bathroom in some hopes of dealing with her grief.
From the top of the stairs she overheard, among tears, Dessel recount what had happened, an encounter with bandits that led to Pinach being overwhelmed. They had won, but only just barely, her father falling in a fight but taking his foes with him. Lily didn't know if she should be shocked, angry, or if she should just cry some more, but whatever she had decided on was beyond her, as she woke up in her bed once more.
Life for them was changed after that, without a doubt. Dessel came by to visit more often, mourning his friend and being there to support Calla. It was odd seeing the man around with her father gone, but despite their relationship being distant since that day, she was thankful for his enduring presence in their lives. When he would visit though, she would often go for walks by herself, wrapped in her father's over-sized jacket and letting her mind wander. On one such walk, she happened to be near the old shed that was a little ways off from the house and decided to go inside.
Among the webs and dust, musky earthy smells and dim light, she marveled at the Wayfinder sitting among boxes and old tools. She brushed her hand against the cool metal form of the hull, walking along until she found the entrance to her father's ship. With some surprise, she found the ship still had power in the basic systems as the walkway unfolded and the door opened. She didn't hesitate to climb inside the vessel, noticing stacks of boxes, piles of clothes, and a messy pile of books strewn about the living area as she explored. While the clothes were old things from the house being stored, the books she quickly discovered had all been her father's.
The sun was low in the horizon as she emerged from the shed, one of Pinach's old journals in hand as she returned to the house. Travel logs, paperwork, training manuals, and personal writing had all been stored there since her dad had died, and it gave Lily a glimpse into the life her father had led away from home. The many books he had left became a new fascination for the girl over the next little while, prompting a slow but significant change.
She was somewhere in her 17th year when she had worked through most of her father's writings and begun to practice the training techniques and exercises he had documented in his manuals. The next step for the young woman was the biggest she had ever taken, and while her mother was apprehensive, she relented in the end. Lily wanted to leave Earth, expanding her horizons and honing her skills like her dad had in his youth. As peaceful as life had been, something had always felt hollow, and this seemed like the answer to her growing desires.
Dessel arrived a few days later, at Calla's request, to show Lily everything she might need to know about the Wayfinder. Weeks were spent teaching the teen how to operate the ship, controls and repairs, little odd quirks of the system and stories of the places she might soon see. The time spent with her dad's old friend learning about the ship was fascinating and a special kind of bond the two had never had a chance to share. Once she was confident with handling the ship, Dessel absentmindedly tussled the young woman's hair and with a smile wished her good luck.
Hugs and kisses and long farewells followed as the day finally came for Lily to strike out on her own for the first time. She stood at the top of the ramp, wearing her dad's jacket zipped up and hands in her pockets, she turned to glance at her mother and her dad's friend. As she pulled out a hand to wave, a smile on her face, she gave one last goodbye before stepping into the ship with nervous energy. Excitement flowed through her from launch all the way to glimpses of space in front of her, and even beyond that.
She had committed herself to this path.
Travelling among the stars was an adventure like no other, and it was only just beginning. Wonder and excitement were plentiful for the girl, as she eventually found an out of the way planet to begin her journey with. Her practice on Earth, after discovering her dad's books, had only just scratched the surface of becoming strong like her dad. Now was the time she could begin and get serious about her training.
By about the age of 20, though she hadn't been diligent at keeping track of time, she had surpassed her own expectations for her progress. She had traveled across a handful of planets, training in different environments, and had tapped into a well of energy her father had many books on, allowing her control of her Ki in ways she had only dreamed of.
Flight was the one thing she had been most proud of achieving, and her first flight had been a very emotional experience for her. It called back to her earliest memories, but she brushed away the tears and smiled, enjoying the freedom and memories that flight brought. Further training would improve her agility in the air, but no matter how good she got at it, the first clumsy flight into the sky was what she remembered most of her training across the years.
By now, her training and travels had reached a point where she had digested most of what her father had left behind, mixed with encounters she had with the many people across the stars. But she started to feel a wall building up in front of her, as if she was reaching a point she couldn't surpass with her efforts. It worried her that she was already reaching the limits in the short time she had been in space, but she was determined to work through it.
Even now, her travels have led her far across the stars to more places unfamiliar and eventually situations that will test all the training to this point. What she feels is the end of progress may only be the beginning...
