Notes
If you want to we can keep going, and i'll have Otto come look for it after you post. If not this is a pl thread for me. Also if you want anything edited about the dog just lmk.
Otto had held up in an old military bunker south of the West Capital. On the wall a blemished old banner was painted on the wall, the ancient letters were indistinguishable, and shaped like two trapezoids turned on their side. The facility was an old ruin, most of the technology was worn from the tests of time. Adorned in his usual rust brown powersuit, with a drill attached to his cannon arm, the studios engineer was hard at work.
His raid on the facility had proved rather useful. He had found several functioning drivers that he was able to install on his suit. The download speed was causing major lag and powerdrain on the functionality of his armor, but these military grade files would surely improve the functionality with each upload. Not wanting to test out a bounty hunt with his powersuit crippled by the disc, he had taken to a little side project.
In front of him was a very unfinished humanoid form amuck with wires. It had a similar shape to Otto’s powersuit, although no room for a passenger was tucked between the wiring. With tools in hand Otto tinkered away with the mechanical object for hours. Getting lost in his work, the engineer didn’t stop until he felt an uncomfortable rumbling in his stomach. For the first few moments he searched the old bunker for preserved food, finding a can that was so old that the labeling had withered away into whiteness. As he opened it, a raunchy smell filled the air.
“How… old is this place?” Otto asked as he quickly pushed the mask of his powersuit back down and exasperated. He carried the can in his free hand and began walking outside, out of the old worn out building and into the tangled thicket that had concealed it throughout the ages.
Quickly, he flung the can into the woods. He wouldn’t eat that nasty…
A large bird fluttered into the air around where he had thrown the can. It had a wingspan that dwarfed his own, and appeared to be a buzzard of sorts. Quick to react, Otto lifted his arm cannon on and moved to fire it…
Bzzzzzzt.
The sound of a drill bit rotating could be heard. Otto had forgotten to remove the attached tool, which circumvented his pulse beam from firing. The large bird flew towards him angrily, letting out a nasty shriek. Otto studied the creature with his eyes, noting a tinge of red surrounding its beak. As it made a pass at him Otto ducked onto the ground, the weeds and leaves of the thicket gusting as the creature moved overhead.
As the creature circled back around, Otto unceremoniously ripped the drill extension from his weapon and threw it on the ground. He turned to shoot at the creature until he noticed something small wrapped viciously in the talons of the beast. It was some sort of small fuzzy earth creature.
For some reason, the cold blooded merc couldn’t bring himself to fire. Why could he kill his own kind for a living and hesitate over something so small. Otto sighed at himself and the flames of his jetpack scorched the ground as he lifted into the air after the gigantic buzzard.
Flying felt strange with the slowdown that the strange driver he was installing. He felt it was harder to navigate freely. He was not looking forward to the landing.
Otto pushed forth heroically into the sky. He looked too short to hit the buzzard dead on, but that wasn’t his goal. The merc barreled into the talon of the creature, grabbing at it with extreme force. The impact of the powersuit managed to snap the leg off of the bird, and Otto fell towards the ground grasping the talon and the creature it was grasping in his hand.
Landing wasn’t something he was ready for at that speed, with the current software updates in progress. The merc plummeted downward, all that he had time to do was tuck and roll, protecting the small creature the best that he could.
The bird had been shrieking for some time now, but the noise didn’t really get to Otto until after the thudding impact. He looked up into the sky to see the beast struggling to fly, trying to bob its head down to look at its missing talon in terror. The buzzard turned chicken and flapped frantically, speeding as far as it could from Otto. It got quite far before it began to plummet into the distant trees of the forest. It wouldn’t take much time to retrieve it, just a bit of a walk and supper would be assured for the next few days.
When Otto looked down at the little creature he had rescued, he frowned a bit. It was a small puppy, its left side had a gaping wound in it. It was breathing sporadically and things were not looking great.
“Well, there goes dinner…” Otto said as he looked off into the distance towards where the bird had fallen. He stared down at the puppy, feeling some strange sense of urgency coming over him.
“You are lucky you are cute,” Otto told the poor creature as he began rushing down the stairs of the bunker. He applied pressure to the dogs wound, but he knew it wasn’t going to make it very long with the injuries that it had. A trip to a doctor in the city would be too little, too late.
Otto was frantic. He had only really ever studied cybernetics as something he would like to be able to do. It looked like he was going to have to take the plunge if he wanted to rescue the creature. He looked at the android likeness of his power armor that he had been working on and sighed, beginning to pull parts off.
~~~~I am skipping this part because gruesome puppy surgery isn’t something I want to write about~~~~~
Days had passed since the encounter with the buzzard. Otto had large bags under his eyes and a look of grimace on his face. He had replaced most of the right side of the dog with circuitry and a makeshift mechanical heart to pump blood into the remaining biological systems. One of the dogs eyes had been permanently damaged, and getting an artificial one to function was a huge pain in the ass. Truthfully, Otto wouldn’t have been able to save the critter at all if some of the data downloaded to his suit hadn’t provided him with assistance as he played god with the creature. Networking small electronics to the dog's spine so that it could operate the artificial equipment was another hurdle, but extremely necessary given that he had to amputate both legs on the right side.
Otto had also gone a step further to give his poor little creation a chance. Using some empty space on the right panel he had installed a deployable energy weapon that would open up and fire when the puppy was in danger, automatic tracking and all. To top it all off he did his best to create a convincing replacement fur so that he wouldn’t end up in some kids science fair project.
Otto smiled a bit as the puppy was stabilized and seemed like everything would work out okay for it. It felt good to do something nice… sometimes…
As the puppy awoke, it let out a whimper. It had come in and out of sleep for a long time, and Otto really didn’t have anything to give it for the pain. It looked on its savior with fear, unable to understand what had happened to it. And with that fear, two small hatches concealed in artificial fur opened on the right side of the dog. A menacing looking laser gun mounted on a robotic appendage popped out and began firing wildly at Otto.
Otto was not prepared. The blast of the energy weapon knocked him straight on his ass as the dog ran away, its weapon retracting back into its body. The blast packed quite a kick, and Otto sat dazed on the ground.
Otto blinked as he watched his creation run off. Should he… follow it? He stood up and dusted himself off. The little mut had already cost him a shit load of parts, and he had at least expanded its lifespan past 0. His good deed for the year was over. He still had a feeling hanging in his gut though, perhaps he should go after it…
“Maybe in a bit…” he thought. For now Otto wanted to take a nap.
