Name: Aiami Lin
Alias: N/A
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 23
Appearance:
Around average height for a human woman, though a little more sturdy in build, mostly due to a higher amount of muscle. Has thick hair that usually lays straight to shoulder length, but is usually tied up in two ponytails to keep it out of the way. Outside of her simple gi she usually prefers green tops that match her jade eyes and light colored cargo shorts.
History:
Born to Zhou and Mai Lin, owners of a gardening and tea store, Aiami had a rather simple childhood. When she was of the tender age of four, she had the joy of attending a local martial arts tournament with her parents. There was something about the fighters, their drive, the way they carried themselves, the way they moved. She wanted to move like that. Their energy filled her with energy, so much so that she didn't sleep that night, instead she was up throwing punches and kicks and imagining she was one of those fighters.
Aiami still lived a rather normal life. She went to school, and when she came of the age of 13 she began to help around the family store. Whenever she wasn't working or studying, however, she spent her time at the martial arts school. She learned some basics from them, but didn't really get the chance to participate until she had saved up enough of her allowance to buy a simple gi, and after that she began to train in earnest. It was rough at first, she found her grades slipped some, and she fell asleep at the store's register more than once. It was worth it, though. Once she acclimated to the training she managed to recover in both areas, and once she had graduated she had even more time to spend at the martial arts school, the only times she wasn't there being when she slept and when she worked.
At that time the enthusiasm from her younger years had slowed some. Aiami still wanted to get stronger, to exude that energy herself, but it wasn't for strength itself. She was satisfied with pushing herself, each barrier broken brought her a sense of pride, the power was a bonus. Her parents were proud of her, as well; partially because they felt the focus brought by her training is what caused her to do so well in school.
In fact, that focus is what was a huge part of the training. Aiami found that the harder she focused, that the more she put effort into her every kick and punch, the stronger she got. It was difficult to maintain it, especially with someone punching back, but she could remember spars where even just the second or two of clarity helped her get the edge. She brought that thought process over to the rest of what she did. If she would just pull through and focus on whatever she was doing at the time, she found that her results would be much better than if she hadn't.
Truthfully, Aiami had this mindset owed to one of the fighters at the martial artists school. A local for many years, she had even fought in the tournament that Aiami had seen so long ago. Her name was Su Yin, and she was already middle-aged by the time Aiami had the chance to actually meet her. A thin, bald-by-choice woman. She taught Aiami that martial arts was more than just fighting, more than power and strength. The energy behind it, ki, was something revered by monks since the beginning of recorded history. It was the energy of spirit, the energy of the soul.
Su taught Aiami that martial arts was a path to peace and clarity, both within and without. Monks of old had used it for more than self-defense and the protection of those they cared for. It was also a means to find harmony with your soul, and the world surrounding. Su showed her a form of martial arts, it's stances and movements. It was still entirely effective in a fight, but the real reason that Su demonstrated it for Aiami was to show that, when the movements were slowed and were paced through rhythmically, they could be used as a form of meditation, a way of focusing on the energy within the body and spirit.
Aiami spent much time training with Su Yin, taking after her in many ways. Su's calm demeanor rubbed off on Aiami, curbing her enthusiasm some, replacing it for a kind of respect for martial arts and what it represented. Aiami had even begun to start each day with stretches and running through the meditative form to help foster her energy as soon as possible. Aiami began to notice that she had better control, she was able to focus for a few seconds more. Su's guidance was something Aiami needed, something more than the constant sparring. It was Su who had shown Aiami that the energy of the body was only one part of martial arts, that it was the ki, the inner energy that was the second. Aiami began to train her ki as well as her body, through things like meditation, energy manipulation, as well as more sparring, respectively.
With the new goal of her training to find a sort of balance between physical and spiritual power, Aiami continued to work closely with Su. The monk did her best to impart her teachings and techniques upon her young student, but Aiami didn't have enough experience, more importantly enough wisdom, to full comprehend some of what Su was telling her. Aiami continued to train her spirit in a similar way that she had her body, and while Su admitted there was some merit to that, the soul and its energy had to be treated differently, with a different respect.
Eventually the time came when Aiami had surpassed Su in power, something they were both aware of. Su was content with her power, not seeking the strength some fighters did, or the joy of pushing limits like Aiami, but rather spent more of her time meditating, looking for the ultimate harmony. Su knew that Aiami couldn't get the experience she needed in the small town. There was a whole wide world of wisdom out beyond it's borders, and Su's final request of her student was that she one day leave to see it. In fact, she commented that only by leaving home, by broadening her horizons could Aiami continue to grow and push herself to become stronger. Aiami took Su's final wisdom to heart: to always be willing to learn, and to find some sort of acceptance with what was taught to her, be it from others, from the world, or from life.
By her current age, Aiami had managed to catch up to an equal level with all of the local martial artists, and while she was still training with them, she knew there were many others out there. She was considering saving up enough to one day actually join the New Turtle School in hopes of getting real tutelage in what she loved to do so much. She still carried her former master's teachings and request to heart. She knew she wouldn't be able to simply join the school, either, not with her money. So, Aiami set out upon the world to explore what it had to offer, and earn enough zeni along the way to join the New Turtle School and see what their teachers had to offer.
