(Before Yuki goes to find Yu)
Twenty-four hours in Yuki’s new space pod didn’t seem so long. Yuki was asleep for most of the trip. She knew she needed the rest for her body to fully recover the injuries she got. As Yuki woke up slowly, she cautiously stretched her arms up. Yuki didn’t feel any pain from her right side which was good. Yuki smiled as she felt a lot better. She then looked outside the window of her space pod. In the distance she could see the big bluish green planet: Earth. Yuki couldn’t help but remember the first time she came to Earth. Yuki had been terrified that she would be smashed as a pancake as her space pod went into an emergency landing due to engine failure. Once Yuki had landed, she soon found out that the engine failure was a fake and that the Arcosian Empire had wanted Yuki to go there to train.
At least this time the landing won’t be so rough Yuki thought. Yuki started to type on the computer to search for where her brother space pod had landed on Earth. She was able to find the coordinates from the tracker in his space pod. Yuki typed them into her computer so her space pod would land near there. Outer-space was beautiful. Yuki watched as Earth came closer and closer into view. She set the space pod on auto-pilot for landing. As her space pod enter Earth’s atmosphere the ride became a little shaky but it wasn’t too bad. Within a few minutes the space pod slowed down as it landed onto solid ground.
Yuki could feel her heart beat in excitement. “I’m finally on Earth again,” Yuki said as she opened up her space pod and jumped out. The environment in this area on Earth was much different then where Yuki was before. There were more rocks and fewer trees. The climate was chilly. As the wind blew, Yuki shivered. She went back into her space pod and grabbed her purple scarf. Yuki wrapped the soft scarf around her neck. Yuki then remembered the little girl that gave her the scarf when Yuki first came to Earth. Her name was Bella. “I’ll have to go visit her soon, I did make a promise,” Yuki said out loud to herself.
Within the distance, Yuki could see a small town. Hmm I could check it out Yuki thought as her stomach gave a small growl noise. I could just get something to eat and then go find Yu She thought. Yuki made her way towards the town. It wasn’t really a big town though, just a few houses and two stores in a circle. Within the middle of the town, there seemed to be a huge campfire. As Yuki walked on the stone path, she saw children running around the area. They were laughing. Yuki noticed they weren’t human though. She gasped as she saw a woman walk out of one of the shops. This woman was a brenchian, just like Yuki. The woman had long blonde hair flowing down her back. She seemed to be middle-aged with wrinkles starting to form on her face.
Yuki walked up to the woman wanting to catch her attention but there was no need. As Yuki, got within a few feet, the woman looked up to see Yuki. The face expression she gave Yuki seemed like the woman knew Yuki from somewhere.
“Yuki, Yuki Kokonattsu, is that you child?” The woman said as she walked up to Yuki and placed her palm against Yuki’s cheek. Yuki was a bit on guard. She took a step back from the woman. The woman let her hand fall down to her side, she seemed a bit hurt at Yuki’s reaction.
“Do…I...know you?” Yuki asked a bit confused. Yuki took a look around the tiny town to see there were other brenchian living in this town. Who is she? Yuki thought as she looked back at the woman.
“No I suppose not. Baby Yuki wouldn’t remember her own godmother. Although your father forced me to stay out of your life once he put himself in danger. He had my family and I sent to this planet to start over. He saved us, but I still wish I could have been able to watch you and Yu grow up. My name is Kishi,” Kishi said looking at Yuki.
Yuki still wasn’t sure. How can I trust her? Yuki thought. “I’m sorry but I just don’t know. As a trained member of the Arcosian Empire, it’s hard for me to believe such a story could be true. I would need proof ma’am,” Yuki said. Being a warrior wasn’t all physical combat; it was also about being smart in situations. Yuki was trained to never trust anyone even a fellow brenchian warrior could be a liar. One thing Yuki learned growing up was that people can be really good liars.
Kishi seemed to know this would be Yuki’s response. She nodded her head. “Your father knew if you were to ever run into me this would have probably been the outcome. So he told me to show you something that may spark your memory back,” kishi said as she turned and started to walk. “Follow me, it’s in my home,”Kishi continued to say as she walked towards one of the houses in the circle. Yuki decided to follow but she kept her guard up.
The area seemed peaceful. Yuki was surprised to see so many brenchian in this small town. Nobody probably bothers them since there not near the human population Yuki thought. Yuki saw they were approaching one of the small cabin homes. Three steps led up to a wooden door. The woman opened the door and walked in. Yuki hesitated at the front door. She looked down to see a welcome mat on the floor. If this is some type of game I can just eliminate her Yuki thought as she slowly walked into the cabin house.
“Yuki, over here,” Kishi voice came from the room to the left. Yuki walked into what seemed to be the living room. Two couches took up half of the space in the room and a small fire place against the wall. A table was in between the two couches. Kiski had what looked like a jewelry box in her hand. She opened it up in front of Yuki. A tune started to play. Yuki’s eyes grew bigger as the tune seemed familiar to her. Kishi then took out a silver necklace with a charm on it.
“Here, does this help,” Kishi said as she held out the bracelet for Yuki to look at. Yuki slowly took the bracelet from her and looked more closely at the charm. The charm looked very familiar. Yuki had seen it in before and as the tune of the jewelry box played, Yuki started to remember.
(Flashback)
Yuki is five years old again. She’s sitting on her bed as she holds the jewelry box she found in her dads room. Yuki liked the tune it played. She started to hum along with it. Inside the jewelry box was a silver necklace with a charm on it. It’s so pretty Yuki thought. Yuki continued to hum to the tune. When the tune stopped, Yuki would rewind it and open the box again.
“Yuki!” Her father called from the kitchen. Yuki jumped up and quickly hid the jewelry box under her pillow. She then ran out into the kitchen. Yuki was wearing a yellow sundress since today she didn’t have to train with her dad.
As Yuki walked into the room, she could tell her dad wasn’t happy. “Yuki, did you go through my stuff in my room?” He asked keeping his tone down.
“Umm…what stuff?” Yuki asked trying to play it cool. Yuki's father took a deep breath.
“Where’s the jewelry box, Yuki?” Her father said his tone getting a little more serious. Yuki knew she wouldn’t be able to get out of this.
“It’s in my room. I’m sorry, dad. I…I just liked the tune it makes when you open the box. Whose is it?” Yuki asked. Yuki’s father took her hand and they both walked back to her room. Yuki’s dad took the jewelry box out from under her pillow.
“Follow me, Yuki and I’ll tell you,” Her father said as he left Yuki’s room. Yuki ran after him excited to know.
They walked into her dad’s bedroom. Yuki sat on her father’s bed as he went to the closet and reached up to take down a cardboard box. He then walked over and sat down as he placed the box between him and Yuki. He then opened the box and Yuki saw tons of pictures. Yuki grabbed a picture of a woman. She looked similar to Yuki except her blonde hair was down.
“Is this my mommy?” Yuki asked. Her father nodded his head. “She’s so pretty dad,” Yuki said and then continued to look through the pictures. She then found another picture with her mom and another woman with her. They both had an arm around each other. Yuki noticed they both wore the same silver necklace with the charm. That same necklace was the one that was in the jewelry box.
“Who’s that, dad?” Yuki asked as she pointed at the lady in the picture. The two women looked a like with the same blue skin and long blonde hair. Their facial structures were different though.
Yuki looked up to see her father had a sad face expression on. “That’s your mom’s sister. She’s also you and Yu’s godmother. When they were both younger they had bought the same jewelry box and necklaces. The charm on the necklaces symbolizes sisters,” Her father said as he too looked through some of the pictures in the box. Yuki didn’t understand why this stuff had to be boxed up. It made Yuki sad.
“Why can’t pictures of mommy be up around the house?” Yuki asked as she held up the first picture she looked at.
“We’ll put this one up, okay? Now go find your brother Yu. I think he’s down the block at one of his friends’ houses,” Yuki father said. Yuki nodded and left the room. Yu and Yuki’s father put the box away and he made a phone call once he was sure the kids were out. He called Kishi.
“Hey, it’s just me. I wanted to make sure your family was all packed up for tomorrow,” Yuki’s dad said on the phone.
“Yea but I just don’t understand why we have to leave. Can I come say bye to the kids? I haven’t seen them since they were born. I feel like I’ve missed out even though you have sent pictures of them,” Kisha said.
“No…that’s not a good idea but look this will all make sense one day. I just can’t put anyone else in danger. Your sister would have wanted me to make sure you and your family is safe. Yuki found the jewelry box. I showed her that picture of you and…” Yuki’s dad had to pause. He could feel tears come to his eyes. Even though it’s been five years not a day goes by that he doesn’t miss his wife, his first and only love. “If you ever meet Yuki and I’m sure you will one day, just let her see the jewelry box and the necklace. Yuki has a good memory it just takes little things to click for her to recognize something,” Yuki’s dad said.
“Okay, I will. Take care of them and take care of yourself,” Kishi said as she tried not to cry and hung up.
(End of Flashback)
“I never knew why you never came to visit us. I guess I just figured you had gone where mom had gone. My father didn’t let us see any one in our family except for my Uncle Hyo,” Yuki said slowly as she looked up at Kishi. “That tune, I recognized it the minute it played. After my dad took the jewelry box back, I used to hum it before I went to sleep every night so I wouldn’t forget it,” Yuki continued to say as Kishi sat down on the other couch across from Yuki.
“You look…you look so much like her. The minute I saw you, I thought for a split second my sister had come back as a young adult but I quickly realized it was her daughter. As much as I hated leaving my home planet, it was the only way to secure my children’s survival but I still regret not being in you and Yu’s lives,” Kishi finished as she reached out and grabbed Yuki’s hand. “Where is your brother by the way?” Kishi then asked.
“He’s here too. We both just came from the Planet Pital. I’ll have to go meet up with him soon though I saw this town and wanted to catch a quick bite,” Yuki said as she remembered how hungry she was again. Her stomach then growled loudly. Kishi gave a smile as she wiped away her dried tears.
“Well, I can cook you up a small snack. It’s the least I can do for my niece,” Kishi said as she stood up and walked into the kitchen.
Yuki placed the necklace back in the jewelry box. She then got up and walked over to a wall that was full of picture frames hanging. Yuki recognized some pictures of her mom in them. There were even a few pictures of Yuki and Yu when they were really little. Yuki felt herself get sad as she saw pictures of people she didn’t know. She guessed they were her cosuins that she never knew about. Yuki walked away from the wall and went into the kitchen where Kishi was cooking. Yuki could smell chocolate chip pancakes. She knows Yuki thought as she smiled.
Kishi caught Yuki’s smile. “It was your mom’s favorite too. Every morning when we were little she would always want chocolate chip pancakes,” Kishi said as she placed two big pancakes on a plate. Yuki sat down at the table as Kishi placed the plate in front of her.
“Thank-you,” Yuki said before she dived in. Her stomach became very happy. Kishis just smiled and then started to wash dishes. Once, Yuki finished her pancakes she sat back in the chair. She felt much better now that she wasn’t hungry anymore. Kishi finished washing and came over to Yuki and sat down at the table.
“Sometimes, I feel like my whole life…I’ve been lied too..” Yuki said slowly as she looked off into the distance. “I understand my father did what he had to do but still…it would have been nice to have more family around,” Yuki said as she looked down.
“Your father did what he thought was best. You and Yu are very special. From a young age you kids were strong fighters. The empire needed fresh blood like that. Our race needed that. As for your father, he didn’t want you kids to grow up suffering with money problems. You kids already lost so much at a young age. Everything that has happened only makes you stronger,”Kishi said to Yuki making Yuki look at her. Yuki clenched her fist.
“Did you hear about the war going on back home, the Arcosian Empire sent me to Earth so I could get stronger,” Yuki said. “But I couldn’t train without knowing Yu was okay so I went to go find him. On Planet Pital we met up with our Uncle Hyo. We found out our fathers killer was on that planet. In the end, we killed him and the king but we lost…” Yuki said as she lost her voice. She banged her fist against the table and stood up. I’m tired of being weak Yuki thought.
“I’m tired of being seen weak. I’m not weak. I am a brenchian. I have trained my whole life as a fighter. People still see me and underestimate me,” Yuki went off in a tantrum. Kishi stood and grabbed Yuki’s shoulder making her stop talking.
“That’s one of your weapons though. They see you as an easy fight but you always prove them wrong. Yuki, you are strong and with training you’ll only get stronger. You and your brother could possibly be the last hope for the brenchian race. Prove everyone wrong. Show them how strong we really are. Our planet may end up getting destroyed but that doesn’t mean our race will,” Kishi said with a determined voice. Yuki nodded her head as she felt her anger go away.
“Well, I should probably go find Yu, before he gets into mischief without me,” Yuki said as Kishi gave Yuki a hug.
“Please, you’re welcomed here anytime. If you need a training area, we have a field out in the back. I would love to see Yu too. Just…be careful, okay?” Kishi said as she let Yuki go from the hug. Yuki could see Kishi really meant what she said.
“I’ll be careful and I would love to come back and train,” Yuki said.
Yuki then made her way out the front door. She took one last look at the small town before flying up into the air. She used her ki sense to see how far Yu was from her location. After flying for a while, Yuki landed and decided to walk some of the way. Alright time to get things back on track Yuki thought. She felt a new confidence come back to her, a new determination. Yuki was ready to get back to business. I’m going to become stronger Yuki thought as she started to think of her new training strategies.
